AEP REMEDIATION LETTER We are quickly approaching the SOL testing that takes place each May. As we are preparing in classrooms, we find that many students benefit from additional help outside of the regular class block. We will be offering several opportunities outside of the classroom, which are outlined below.

After School Remediation and Saturday Slam are open to all students. Academic Enrichment Period (AEP) students have already been assigned, however, we can add students if requested. Teachers have carefully hand-chosen students they feel would benefit from this extra remediation and a small group teaching/learning atmosphere.

AEP AEP will begin on April 29th and run each day until May 17th. The change in the schedule will be for ALL students regardless of participation in the AEP remediation. Below you will see the daily schedule:

Saturday Slam Saturday Slam will be held on May 18th from 8:30-11:30 with three 55 minute sessions. Students will be able to sign-up for Saturday Slam in the library starting on Monday, April 29th. The sign-up is for planning purposes. We will be running two buses for pickup and drop off that morning and you will find the schedule below. Locations of each subject will be given to students on Saturday morning. Light snacks will be provided.

After School Remediation Remediation will be held on most Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 2:15-3:15. Specific teachers’ schedules are posted on the website under Headlines. (https://ycsd.yorkcountyschools.org/YHS).

Aspen Data Administrators and teachers will be providing important testing information over the next couple of weeks. Please make sure that your email address and phone number are current in Aspen.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the school. Good luck to you and your student(s) as we bring the 2018-2019 school year to a close.

SCA DRIVE TO HELP HOMELESS WOMEN One of the largest needs for homeless women in the country is access to feminine hygiene products due to its high expense. This is why York High’s SCA will have a feminine hygiene product drive April 29th-May 3rd to help homeless women in . There will be a donation box in the library where students can drop off boxes with feminine hygiene products, such as: pads, tampons, and menstrual cups. Please keep in mind these products must be individually sealed. We will donate these products to local homeless shelters for women, such as The Natasha House and I Support the Girls (an organization which sends these products to shelters), as well as York High’s Comfort Closet for homeless teens in our school.

SENIORS: COMMUNITY SERVICE LOGS, COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE & SCHOLARSHIP LETTERS Seniors: Please remember your community service logs are due. See your school counselor if you have any questions. Also remember to bring your college acceptance and scholarship letters to the school counseling office.

MU ALPHA THETA Seniors: Cords are for sale starting May 6-May 31. Please stop by room 106 before school, after school or during 1B or 3B to purchase a cord. Please bring exact change of $7 or a check made out to YHS.

New Inductees: Our induction ceremony for all new Mu Alpha Theta members will be May 29 at 2:15 in the YHS library. Family members are encouraged to attend as well as faculty.

ATTENDANCE There is a significant relationship between student attendance and student achievement. We want students to be successful at York High School and in order to achieve that goal, we need your student to attend school and be on time every day unless they are ill.

If your student is ill, please send in a note or email our attendance secretary, Allison Martinez at [email protected] within 24 hours. Legitimate reasons for absences are illness, death in immediate family, doctor or dental appointment (not possible to be scheduled on non-school time), and or exceptional circumstances as determined by the building principal.

Absences occurring on those pre-determined test dates should be avoided and will only be considered excused under extreme extenuating circumstances. For any other reason, the absence is unexcused. If the student accumulates excessive (10 or more) absences, a physician’s note may be required. (YCSD Student Handbook, page 1)

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION

Sending application materials to a college/university will be a smooth process, if you follow the steps outlined below. 1) Pick up a Transcript Request form from the School Counseling Office or download it from the YHS website (School Counseling link). You will need to complete the Transcript Request form only ONCE. You will be given this form in your senior meeting, as well. 2) Bring your signed Transcript Request form and a completed Senior Information Sheet to the School Counseling Office. In order for your counselor to complete his/her portion of your college applications, it is REQUIRED that you complete and submit your Senior Information Sheet in a timely fashion. Please notify your counselor of any electronic application submissions so he/she can check to make sure electronic requests have been received.

*Your counselor must receive notification at least two weeks before your application deadline.

*When requesting letters of recommendation from teachers, it is important you give them plenty of notice. It would be helpful if you could provide them with a copy of your activity sheet/resume, as well as something letting them know the deadlines and how to submit your letter to your requested school(s).

COMMON APPLICATION The Common Application is accepted by a growing number of colleges and universities. It allows a student to complete an application once and have that information used by multiple institutions. You will access The Common Application at www.commonapp.org. The first step is to invite your counselor and teachers to submit information on your behalf. It is important to make sure you have correct names and email addresses to complete this process. Once you have completed this step, you will want to follow up with your counselor and teachers to confirm they received an email from The Common Application site.

PARCHMENT The majority of colleges and universities are now accepting transcripts via Parchment (www.parchment.com/register), an electronic transcript exchange service. In order to create your account with Parchment, you must have a registration code. Please see your school counselor for this code. You will also receive this code at your senior meeting. Please note: Parchment will not be used for any Common Application colleges or universities, as transcripts will be uploaded to The Common Application site for those schools.

If the school(s) to which you are applying does not use The Common Application, Parchment Exchange, Coaliton, or SENDedu, see your school counselor for instructions on how to have your transcripts and supporting documents sent.
