5 ThankREAL you for all of your legal questions LIFE over the last month. Our friendly LAW team of experts randomly chose to answer the following:

My husband and I are both in our 80s and are worried we might start to struggle when it comes to making decisions in a few years. We have three LET US children and would like them to be able to help us make decisions. I’ve SOLVE read about Powers of Attorney but am not really sure what these are or the YOUR different types, can you help?

We would certainly recommend that you consider creating a Lasting Power of LEGAL Attorney (“LPA”) which is a legal document that lets you appoint one or more PROBLEMS people (known as ‘attorneys’) to help you make decisions, or make decisions on your behalf. You and your husband will each need to create your own LPA but can both appoint your children if you trust them and believe that they have the appropriate skills to make the proposed decisions on your behalf. You can choose to appoint them on a joint or joint and several basis and can also include certain restrictions or guidance within your LPA if you so wish. There are two types of power and you can opt to make either, or both, of them:

The Property and Financial Affairs LPA gives your attorney(s) authority to deal with your property and finances, for example managing bank accounts, dealing with utility providers, paying bills, or dealing with your property. The power can be used or restricted as you specify.

A Health and Welfare LPA gives your attorney(s) power to make decisions about things like your daily routine (eg washing, dressing, eating), medical care, or moving into a care home. This authority can be extended, if you so choose, so that your attorney(s) have power to give or refuse consent to the continuation of life-sustaining treatment.

The LPA must be signed by you and your chosen attorney(s), and certified by an independent person confirming that you understand the nature and scope of the LPA and have not been unduly pressured into making the power. The power must also be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) before it can be used.

9 I have a strange looking patch in my mouth, could it be mouth cancer? Mouth cancer or Oral cancer is the 8th most common cancer in the world and is where a tumour develops anywhere on the inside of your mouth. Anyone can develop oral cancer even if they have no teeth. What to look for • Red or white patches on the inside of the mouth including the tongue or lip (they may be raised but they could also be flat) • An ulcer that does not hurt or has been there for over two weeks • A lump inside the mouth, tongue or lip, but could also be near the neck. It is advisable to visit your dentist if you are concerned about having any of these symptoms, it is always better to have it checked than to leave it.

White patch Red patch Ulcer

Causes Tumours develop because the normal cell growth goes wrong and the cells continue to grow and divide when they are not meant to. Risk factors that could encourage this process to occur include: • Smoking or using products that contain tobacco (it is controversial but some E-Cigarette products are thought to have some cancer causing properties). • High alcohol consumption. • The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection, which also causes genital warts and cervical cancer. • Damage from the sun may increase the risk of cancer developing on the lip. Can it be caught early? • The British Dental Health Foundation found that 1,800 people a year in the UK lose their lives to mouth cancer but most of them could have been prevented if it had been detected earlier. • As your GP won’t usually routinely check the inside of your mouth but your dentist does, it is therefore very important to attend regular dental check-ups (even if you have no teeth). How does my dentist check for mouth cancer? • The dentist will check all around the inside of your mouth for anything strange and may use a small mirror to help. • They will ask you to stick your tongue out and move it around so they can see everywhere on your tongue for anything strange. • They will then look down your throat and may ask you to say “Ahh” if they need a clearer look. What if they find something strange? • They will tell you what they have found and where it is, they may even be able to take a picture of it for their record but also so that you can have a look at it. • If they are concerned by it, they may then refer you to a consultant at the nearest hospital for a further examination and testing. The test may include taking a sample of the cells that make up the patch, which are viewed under a microscope to see what is wrong with them. • If the results of the test show that the cells are cancerous then further testing may be needed to find out what type of treatment is required. These tests may include blood tests, x-rays or scans. Can it be prevented Visiting your dentist regularly can help to find early signs but there are a few things that can help to reduce your risk of developing mouth cancer: • A healthy diet, with plenty of vitamins A, C and E can help your body to protect itself against oral cancer as will eating plenty of fruit and vegetables. • Wear the appropriate level of sun protective cream when you know you will be exposed to the sun, using a lip balm with SPF in it can help. • Avoid alcohol and smoking. At New Street Dental Care, we think that regular check-ups are extremely important to help you maintain all aspects of your dental health and especially for the early detection of possible cancer in the mouth. In addition, our dentist, Julian Chen will check your mouth every time you attend for treatment and not just at your check-ups. Give us a call on 01264 301301 if you are concerned and our friendly reception staff will answer any questions you have or book an appointment for you.

13 Community News Tasty choral fayre at carol concert The annual carol concert by the Harmonium Singers at St Mary’s Church, Andover, has become a regular Christmas event in the town. And there’s nothing like a choir to create that special seasonal atmosphere in the true spirit of Christmas. This year’s event begins at 7.30pm on Saturday 16 December. As always there’ll be a popular mix carols old and new, with choral arrangements of well-known favourites and carols for all to sing. This year there’ll also be recent pieces by Alexander L’Estrange and Iain Quinn, all combined with seasonal readings and festive interval refreshments. It all adds up to a mouth-watering proposition, so get your tickets early from The Lights, Newbury Building Society or choir members at £8.00. Alternatively you can buy a ticket at the door on the night for £10.00. Under-14s are admitted free. Proceeds this year go to Andover Crisis and Support Centre. So who better to speak to than Dorthe Thomas, an Andover based “Super Facialist” whose High Street Spa recently won Gold at the British Hair & Beauty Awards. Dorthe looks at the skin holistically and observes that, “the change in seasons, central heating and not enough sleep can play havoc with your skin, leaving it looking dull and blemished. I’ve developed The Red Carpet facial to combat this and to help my clients look glowing and feel confident.” The treatment starts with a flash micro-dermabrasion to remove dead skin cells and impurities. This is followed by a facial massage with frozen ice globes to improve circulation and tighten the pores. Plant Stem Cells are then massaged in and pushed deep into the skin with the Cool Lift Gun from Cryosthetics. This plumps skin up and evens out fine lines and wrinkles. The results are immediate and impressive – a perfect pick me up ahead of the festive season. Banish It is Dorthe’s 3 Step Organic Body Wrap which she developed to help clients shift cellulite, promote inch loss and tone up the skin. The products used are packed full of highly concentrated active plant extracts, caffeine and essential oils all designed to smooth and firm the skin. If you’re looking for a treatment that really delivers results fast then look no further than the Banish It Wrap. Dorthe is offering 25% off The Red Carpet Facial and Banish It Wrap in December on presentation of this article. Let’s not forget, though, to make Christmas a fun time for our pets as well. It seems that many of us are already planning on doing this according to an RSPCA survey: • 91% of people were planning on buying presents for their pets. • 26% of pets could expect to have their own advent calendars. • 55% would wake up on Christmas morning to their very own Christmas stocking. • 15% of owners will make a Christmas card for their pet. • 26% will have their own special Christmas dinner cooked for them. • 18% of people admitted to spending more on their pets at Christmas than on their Mother-in–law!

36 www.mlggazettes.co.uk With an estimated 300 million pounds expected to be spent in the UK on festive presents for pets, what would make a good gift? There are plenty of innovative and fun toys available for pets these days, many of which provide mental stimulation as well as exercise. Climbing frames for cats with hiding spaces and scratching posts included are great, especially for cats that are mainly indoors. These can help provide activities to reduce stress and increase exercise. There are also puzzle toys for both dogs and cats, in which they have to figure out a series of actions to release a food reward. You may want to buy a ball or soft toy for your pet, just remember to chose one that is of an appropriate size and material. Balls which are too small present a choking hazard, and if your dog is a chewer then softer toys may not last too long with the risk of squeakers or stuffing being swallowed as the toy is chewed up. You don’t have to spend a fortune on toys either, you can easily make fun toys from empty kitchen rolls or toilet roll tubes. For cats you can cut holes in them big enough to put a paw through and hide treats inside then stuff the ends with paper. They can then try and get the treats out. For dogs just stuff the rolls with treats then fill the ends with paper to pull out. You can even decorate the cardboard rolls with a Christmas theme! As well as the presents a huge part of getting into the Christmas spirit involves eating festive foods. Unfortunately many of the treats we like to enjoy ourselves are toxic to our pets, especially those containing chocolate or dried fruits such as raisins or sultanas. But there is no need for them to miss out, there are plenty of recipes for homemade biscuits and other treats for our furry friends. If your pet has a dietary intolerance though, be sure to check the ingredients first. Have a Merry Christmas 37 Do you keep hearing about “the cloud” but aren’t sure what it is? Read on. 45 This month’s Walk: Discovering more around Lockerley by Malcolm Price his month’s walk returns to the Lockerley area, with the start from the Thard standing at Butts Green, opposite Lockerley Primary School (postcode SO51 0NG). This location was last used in the June 2015 Gazette, when venturing out towards Mottisfont and Dundridge, the opposite direction to this walk. At 4.5 miles the walk is only moderately difficult and should take the seasoned walker between 80 and 90 minutes to complete. Glazed Ham • 6kg (13lb 8oz) cooked leg of ham • 1/2 cup of cloves Using a small sharp knife cut the rind off the ham but leave a thin layer of fat. Spread half of your preferred glaze all over the ham with a palette knife, using the back of a spoon press a clove in the centre of each diamond. Investing in property is all about what you buy the property for. You make your money with your buying value, rather than your eventual sale value. Over the last 12 months property values in Tidworth have risen by around 1.98%. This is great for those that have already bought a property in the town. A number of three bedroom houses in the area which were selling for a maximum of £192,000 in 2014 are now selling for up to £227,500. This age of property is popular with both tenants Call 01264 356500 and buyers as they tend to have larger rooms, grahamco.co.uk especially the third bedroom and this is more appealing. As the achievable rents should be around £900 per month the annual yield is slightly lower than say an ex council property on one of the large estates, but the likelihood is that the capital growth will be better. John Hanson School Careers Fair 2017 Almost 500 Year 11 students from schools across Andover met at the annual John Hanson careers fair in mid-October. The visiting main speaker, Alan Bullock, complimented John Hanson on such an outstanding event which clearly demonstrated how much care is taken with regards to the young people and their next steps. He further praised John Hanson saying: “I visit careers fairs all over the world and this was one of the best organised ones”.

64 www.mlggazettes.co.uk Education News Lynn Richards, John Hanson’s independent careers advisor, ensured that Year 11 were able to have conversations with a whole variety of higher and further education establishments as well as several apprenticeship providers. She said: “We were proud to welcome over forty local businesses into John Hanson for the full day and we thank them for their time and efforts. We would also like to thank David Gleave of Test Valley Borough Council, who has been fully supportive of this event.” For our aspiring public sector workers John Hanson invited the , the Army, Hampshire Fire Service and the Police; all these sectors provided fantastic information for their year 11s about future steps and opportunities. For John Hanson students this was a small part of a bigger PSHE careers day in which they explored the interpersonal and written skills that are required for applications and interviews. In their CV writing skill session, Kim from Ocado aimed to enlighten students on the art of effective CV writing; model examples were interrogated and common misconceptions addressed. Students were provided with helpful steps and key areas to include when the time comes for them to sell themselves on paper. They also had a highly motivational session which engaged the students on how to make a brilliant first impression at an interview. Advice varied from not eating garlic just before, to having a question prepared for the interviewer to demonstrate their commitment. Anna Hall – Assistant Headteacher said: “The whole day was a huge success and we thank all the outside agencies who supported us.” 65 Gardening & Landscaping
