Dear Parents

How can you support your child on the path to higher education?

This country has many of the world’s top universities, several of which are in or near London. However, still too few of the brightest students from East London state schools like George Mitchell make it to these universities, in spite of their high ability. We want this to change and – with the right advice, approach and support – your child can be part of that change.

I am writing to invite you and your child(ren) to an meeting in school on Tuesday 8th July at 6.00 pm.

Guest speaker: Chidi Onyeche, B.A. (Oxon)

Chidi was a student at Connaught School for Girls and went on to study at the University of Oxford from where she now has a B.A. Honours degree in Law. She was active in the University of Oxford African and Caribbean Society and is keen to help young people in Leyton aspire to the top universities. In the meeting we shall advise you and your child about how to organise time, how to study and revise, what combinations of options are best at GCSE and A Level and what university life is like.

We already organise trips to universities for students in years 9, 10 and 11 but this is an opportunity for you to be directly involved with your son or daughter. We appreciate that the meeting will be during Ramadan and promise that it will last no more than one hour. Out of respect to those fasting there will not be refreshments but if it is a hot day drinking water will be available.

Yours sincerely

Martin Spafford, More Able Leading Teacher
