The Legacy of Andre Vauchez's Sainthood in the Later Middle Ages
The Legacy of André Vauchez � Sainthood in the Later Middle Ages Thomas Head Hunter College and the Graduate Center, CUNY It is the appearance of a translation entitled Sainthood in the Later Middle Ages (trans. Jean Birrell [Cambridge, 1987]) which provides us the excuse this afternoon to consider the André Vauchez � masterwork and its legacy in shaping the hagiographic scholarship over the course of almost two decades. Vauchez originally published his thèse d �état in 1981. It became on its publication, and remains today, the benchmark for all study of hagiography and the cult of saints in the later middle ages. The book is a systematic examination of the records of the formal processes initiated for the canonization of saints between 1198 and 1431. Vauchez thus implicitly took up the challenge issued in 1965 by Frantisek Graus Volk, Herrscher und Heiliger im Reich der Merowinger: Studien zur Hagiographie der Merowingerzeit (Prague, 1965), that is to use neglected genres of hagiographic works as sources for the social history of western Christianity. Given the importance that has come to be accorded Graus � pioneering study among scholars �particularly Anglophone scholars �who examine hagiography more for social historical than for philological or theological reasons, it is natural to link the work of the French Catholic to that of the Czech Marxist. Our chair this afternoon, Richard Kieckhefer �himself one of the most distinguished Anglophone scholars of late medieval sanctity �made exactly that connection on the opening page (p. xix) of the foreword which he provided for the English translation. Vauchez himself invoked Graus on the first page of his own introduction, but in a much more limited manner, as one among a group of scholars of the Merovingian and Carolingian periods who have "made it possible to bring within the �territory of the historian � the terra incognita which the history of sanctity has long represented." Protestant Competition is Good for Saints Protestant Competition is Good for Saints Robert J. Barro and Rachel M. McCleary Harvard University Saints are a major point of disagreement between the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant faiths. During the Protestant Reformation in the early 1500s, the Catholic doctrine of the intercessory power of saints was theologically denied by Martin Luther and John Calvin on the grounds of justification by faith alone in Jesus Christ.1 The Catholic Church’s position on saints, particularly as agents for souls in purgatory, created a “soul-prayer industry,” whereby indulgences funded a variety of religious activities and institutions. Notable here were chantry foundations, which provided an endowment for the purpose of employing priests to sing masses to benefit the souls of deceased persons.2 Protestantism, by contrast, rejected belief in purgatory and the mediating power of saints. One reason the Catholic Church maintained the cult of saints throughout the centuries is to energize the Catholic membership. The nomination of candidates for sainthood begins in a local context with a cult of worshippers. The variety and specialization of would-be saints are products of the local demand for veneration.3 This process allows changes in regional preferences to be reflected in the choices of individuals nominated for sainthood. 1Philip Melanchthon, a close friend of Martin Luther and a Professor of New Testament at Wittenberg University, drafted a common confession for the Lutheran Lords and Free Territories. Known as the Augsburg Confession, the document was presented to Emperor Charles V on June 25, 1530. Article 21 of the Augsburg Confession states: "Scripture does not teach us to invoke the Saints, or to ask for help from the Saints; for it puts before us Christ as the one mediator, propitiatory, high-priest and intercessor." 2The term “soul-prayer industry” comes from Diarmaid MacCulloch, The Reformation: A History (New York, Viking Press, 2003) p. -

Backgrounder prepared by Office of Media Relations U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops 3211 Fourth Street NE ∙ Washington, DC 20017 202-541-3200 ∙ http://www.usccb.org/mr/ Making Saints Introduction All Christians aspire to become saints, that is, persons in heaven (officially canonized or not), who lived lives of great charity and heroic virtues and who are worthy of imitation. In official Church procedures there are three steps to sainthood: a candidate becomes “Venerable,” then “Blessed” and then “Saint.” Venerable is the title given to a deceased person recognized formally by the pope as having lived heroic virtues. To be beatified and recognized as a Blessed, one miracle acquired through the candidate‟s intercession is required in addition to recognition of heroic virtue or martyrdom. Canonization requires a second miracle after beatification, though a pope may waive these requirements. (A miracle is not required prior to a martyr‟s beatification, but one is required before canonization.) Key Terms Beatification -- the second stage in the process of proclaiming a person a saint; occurs after a diocese and the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has conducted a rigorous investigation into the person‟s life and writings to determine whether he or she demonstrates a heroic level of virtue or suffered martyrdom. A miracle attributed to the person‟s intercession must be proved. Blessed -- titled bestowed on a person who has been beatified and accorded limited veneration. Canonization – the formal process by which the Church declares a person to be a saint and worthy of veneration universally. Congregation for the Causes of Saints – a department of the Roman Curia, established originally as the Congregation of Rites by Pope Sixtus V in 1588. -

The Roman church declared supremacy over all the other churches circa 300 AD, and the "history of the visible church", from that point until the Protestant Reformation of the 1500's, is the history of the "Roman Catholic Church".
