We can no longer trust in the unseen forces and the invisible hand of the market. Growth in justice requires more than economic growth, while presupposing such growth: it requires decisions, programmes, mechanisms and processes specifically geared to a better distribution of income, the creation of sources of employment and an integral promotion of the poor which goes beyond a simple welfare mentality. I am far from proposing an irresponsible populism, but the economy can no longer turn to remedies that are a new poison, such as attempting to increase profits by reducing the work force and thereby adding to the ranks of the excluded.

  • The Effect of Iron Status During Pregnancy on Hearing Functions in the Newborn
The effect of iron status during pregnancy on hearing functions in the newborn. by Mona Doorsian A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters of Science degree in Human Kinetics. School of Human Kinetics Faculty of Health Sciences University of Ottawa © Mona Doorsian, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 Abstract Background: Iron deficiency, anemia, and iron excess have been associated with altered hearing functions in children and adults. Animal studies suggest that iron deficiency during pregnancy negatively affect fetal auditory development. The relationship between maternal iron status and auditory functions in healthy term newborns has not been clearly elucidated among humans. The goal of this pilot study was to determine the relationship between markers of iron status during pregnancy and brainstem auditory function in healthy neonates. Methods: Pregnant women who gave birth at the Montfort Hospital were recruited to take part in this study (n=6). Within two weeks after birth, their newborn’s hearing function was assessed by wave amplitude, latency and inter-latency from the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test. Markers of iron status, namely hemoglobin (Hb) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), were collected retrospectively for the first and second trimester from the women’s medical chart. Results: Overall, no significant relationship was observed between maternal Hb and MCV concentrations and newborns auditory function. Although two significant Spearman correlations were observed (MCV and inter-latency I-V; r=0.87; p=0.005 and Hb and amplitude V; r=0.89; p=0.04), these findings may be due to chance because of multiple testing and the small sample size.

  • St. Gallen, 12. Srpna 2014 Excelence, Situace Křesťanů a Jiných

SONS OF DON BOSCO SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SALESIAN BISHOPS 1884 to 2001 by Charles N. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse crated many other bishops.

  • Cepcm Directory 2012 I the Official Teachings of the Church on the Pastoral Care of the Migrants
CEPCM DIRECTORY 2012 I THE OFFICIAL TEACHINGS OF THE CHURCH ON THE PASTORAL CARE OF THE MIGRANTS The history of humankind is a history of migration. Migrations are on the increase day by day for reasons of better livelihood, or for other demands of life like jobs, strenuous conditions in one’s own country, religious persecution and so on. It is a matter of serious concern for all nations and people. There are many advantages along with it, like good job opportunities, peaceful life, higher salaries, wide range of living standards, etc. But it is a fact that migrants who have had to give up their homeland, possessions and relations inevitably carry with them the characteristics and memories of their own people as an indelible identity which cannot be renounced or denied. Experience has shown that the inability of expression in other than the mother language and loss of cultural and spiritual patrimonies not only damage the conscience but also cancel religious convictions and practices. As far as the Church is concerned, migration has a great missionary dimension. Pope Paul VI in Evangelii Nuntiandi notes: “It is the result of their living presence and witness in the midst of new people that forms new Churches. So they are the real seeds and the evangelizers” (n.21). Migration always involves uprooting, detachment from one’s people, culture and place. At the same time it is for insertion and integration into a new society and place. In the Old Testament God brought the Israelites to the promised land to make them a chosen race and wanted them to keep up their identity in the new land.
