POLAND Culture and Art ISBN 978-83-8010-013-8 www.poland.travel EN Culture and Art 3 Culture and Art Culture and Art 5 Culture: Our national heritage and the testimony of romantic reflections Polish culture is woven from the memories of past greatness and the dreams of a better future, and its national character is deeply rooted in Romanticism. In every branch of contemporary art, our rich Polish folklore becomes a source of inspiration for artists. nown for being very musical, Poles love dance and music. Folk melodies Kcan be heard in Chopin’s works, while Krzysztof Penderecki and Witold Lutosławski set new standards in the world of avant-garde music. Poland attracts a lot of attention, thanks to its talented jazz musicians and young artists excelling in the domain of alternative music. The poetry of Wisława Szymborska, recognised with a Nobel Prize, is appreciated in many corners of the world. Like Szymborska’s poems, many others’ works have been translated into foreign languages: the literary reportages of Ryszard Kapuściński, the futuristic prose of Stanisław Lem or the dramas of Sławomir Mrożek. Igor Mitoraj and Magdalena Abakanowicz are consid- ered ambassadors of Polish sculpture, with their monumental works arousing worldwide admi- ration. Roman Opałka’s and Wilhelm Sasnal’s paintings are highly sought after by art collec- tors. ▶ ▶ Poland has been home to many illustrious personalities, whose work changed the face of the world. Some were scientists, like Nicolaus Coperni- cus or Marie Skłodowska-Curie. Others shaped our reality in different ways, for example, the founders of Hollywood, Samuel Goldwyn and the Warner brothers.

  • Premiere of “Nabucco” on 25 May 2019
Semperoper Dresden: Premiere of “Nabucco” on 25 May 2019 PRESS RELEASE First new production under the baton of the Semperoper’s Principal Guest Conductor, Omer Meir Wellber / Triple debut for Saioa Hernández / Plácido Domingo sings title role in June Dresden, 24 May 2019. On Saturday, 25 May 2019, the curtain will rise in the Semperoper for the premiere of David Bösch’s new production of “Nabucco”. Following his debut with Korngold’s “Die tote Stadt”, the director is now staging Verdi’s third opera in Dresden. Simultaneously, this is the first new production in Dresden to be conducted by Omer Meir Wellber, one of the leading maestros in the operatic and orchestral repertoire, and who, from this season, is principal guest conductor of the Semperoper. Andrzej Dobber, one of the world’s top Verdi baritones, will sing the title role of “Nabucco”. The Polish star has already appeared in Dresden this season as Baron Scarpia in “Tosca”. Saioa Hernández will make a triple debut as Abigaille: Not only is she tackling this role for the first time, but she is also making her Semperoper and German debuts. After making her house debut at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in December 2018 as Odabella (“Attila”), the multi award-winning Spanish soprano has been acclaimed around the world as a new star in the operatic firmament. The role of Fenena will be sung by mezzo-soprano Christa Meyer, a permanent member of the Semperoper ensemble, who has already delighted audiences this season as Geneviève in “Pelléas et Mélisande” and Adelaide in “Arabella”.

  • La Traviata Los Angeles Opera May 30, 2009
OperaOnline.us Worldwide reviews for a worldwide audience Los Angeles Opera’s Violetta, Marina Poplavskaya – a great talent with one of the most beautiful soprano voices I have heard in years. Photo: Robert Millard GIUSEPPE VERDI LA TRAVIATA LOS ANGELES OPERA MAY 30, 2009 By: Carol Jean Delmar OperaOnline.us Los Angeles Opera is ending its 2008-09 season with what the man sitting next to me called “easy-listening opera.” What made this “La Traviata” so easy to listen to was the marvelous honey-toned Russian soprano, Marina Poplavskaya. This is the same Giovanni Agostinucci production I raved about in September 2006, which starred Renée Fleming as the dying courtesan, Violetta; and Rolando Villazón as her smitten lover, Alfredo. The sets are a little worn though, yet still attractive: the Act 1 party scene in golds and beiges; the Act 2 country retreat with fine wood paneling; Flora’s abode in dazzling reds; and Violetta’s room with a fashionable bed for her to die on. Both Fleming and Villazón inhabited their roles. Villazón exhibited charisma and energy, and Fleming had soul. The current production is quite different though. The excitement isn’t there. Although the artists sang and acted well, I didn’t “feel” much and neither did they -- and that goes for conductor Grant Gershon as well. Passionate conductors draw passion from their orchestras. This orchestra was at times slow. At times the conductor, singers and musicians weren’t in sync. The disinterested musicians disinterested me. It was a precise, correct textbook reading. Grant Gershon played it too safe.

  • ABSTRACT Music Has Accompanied Me from an Early Age. I Was Born
ABSTRACT Music has accompanied me from an early age. I was born into a family with an established musical tradition. My father was the first clarinetist of the Wroclaw Philharmonic, then the Krakow Philharmonic, as well as lecturer at the Academy of Music in Krakow. My mother was a teacher at the Primary School of Music in Kraków and Frederic Chopin Secondary Music School. My parents from an early age shaped my musical sensibility, by attending concerts, daily nurturing and development of musical aptitude and exposing me to excellent recordings. My father inspired me with his playing and passion for the clarinet and thanks to him I decided to choose this career. A huge role in my musical quest was also played by my brother – Tomasz Lato, bassist and co-founder of the band KROKE. I received a classical musical education. I got a PhD degree in musical arts in the discipline of instrumental arts on 4 April 2011 on the basis of the submitted thesis: Sonata for clarinet in the works of English composers of the twentieth century based on the sonatas by Ch. V. Stanford, A. Bax, H. Howells and R.R. Bennett. The degree was awarded by the Instrumental Faculty Council of the Music Academy in Krakow. Earlier in this Academy of Music, I did my PhD studies (2009-2011), assistant internship at the Instrumental Department at the Department of Wind Instruments, Percussion and Accordion (in 2002) and Master‟s studies (1997-2002) leading to a Master's degree of art in the instrumental arts and specializing in playing the clarinet, in the clarinet class of Prof.

  • Libretto Travelfor the Arts Autumn 2015
LIBRETTO TRAVELFOR THE ARTS AUTUMN 2015 www.travelforthearts.com +44 20 8799 8350 [email protected] welcome to the world of OPERA, DANCE CLASSICAL MUSIC HOLIDAYS Welcome to the Autumn Libretto of Travel for the Arts, the UK’s leading opera, classical music and dance holiday specialist, established in 1988 for The Friends of Covent Garden. In this edition we offer more new tours for like-minded travellers to the world’s legendary opera houses and music festivals. Once again we are delighted to be able to offer you new destinations, including the charming Italian city of Piacenza for New Year, and picturesque Ljubljana for performances in the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Spring sees the Salzburg Whitsun Festival celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare with a programme based around the tale of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. We also travel to Milan to hear Plácido Domingo sing I due Foscari, to Warsaw for a tour celebrating opera and Polish national composer Chopin, and to Amsterdam for the finale of their 50th Season Anniversary celebrations (including the new production of Pique Dame, as seen in the photograph on this page). Finally, we present two Ring Cycles; in Washington DC and Berlin for the last ever cycle of Götz Friedrich’s acclaimed production in April 2017. All details including hotels, meals, excursions and tour leaders are hand-picked. We pride ourselves on the dedicated service we give to our patrons; many of our travellers are regulars with up to 100 TFA tours under their belts.
