Only it's not so easy. This was another great volume from Mike Carey and Crew. I like how the series is shaping up to a bit more cerebral. Jan 19, Dan rated it really liked X-men Legacy: Salvage Shelves: comics This review is meant to reflect my feelings on Mike Carey's writing on the X-Men books overall. I didn't become aware of him at all, really, until the lead-ins to the Messiah Complex crossover. During that, and especially since, he's shown that above all other X-Men writers, he alone seems to be up to the task of remembering their history, whether for good or bad, and embracing it and incorporating it into his books, what used to be known as "continuity", which sees to be a four-letter word at t This review X- men Legacy: Salvage meant to reflect my feelings on Mike Carey's writing on the X-Men books overall. During that, and especially since, he's shown that above all other X-Men writers, he alone seems to be up to the task of remembering their history, whether for good or bad, and embracing it and incorporating it into his books, what used to be known as "continuity", which sees to be a four- letter word at times in modern comics. If he's using a character, no matter how obscure, he X-men Legacy: Salvage to make it a point to know their history, to know how they would react to a situation, or, more specifically, another character. Balancing this in books notorious for X-men Legacy: Salvage many characters is a challenge, but he's pulled it off. He's also a prime example of the axiom that there are no bad characters, just character with bad writers. He's taken characters that to many writers are boring, troublesome, or allegedly one-note, and turned them into something serious and interesting. Xavier, Danger, , Rogue, and most personally for me Gambit have all benefited from Carey's attention to them, and they all come out of X- Men Legacy as much richer characters. I mentioned before how he has an eye for the histories of this franchise, and in Legacy, he's never had a better chance to show this off. Since the series is supposed to represent the rebuilding of Xavier's shattered mind, we're often taken into his newly restored memories. There X-men Legacy: Salvage several pages that either feature quick panels or just word balloons lifted straight out of older comics. I immediately jumped on phrases like, "Why does everyone say my name like it means 'Shut up'? Carey isn't concerned with having everything new-reader accessible, but it also doesn't detract from the story. For my money, he has a fan in me for being one of the best writers to handle Gambit ever, and he apparently isn't finished with him yet. I think he wants to "fix" Gambit much liked he fixed Rogue and X-men Legacy: Salvage, and I welcome it. Aug 09, Praxedes rated it it was ok. This review is for the entire X-Men Legacy series, of which this is the first installment. I found myself conflicted throughout this saga: there was something about it that rubbed me the wrong way yet I was unable to stop reading it! The intertwining of the various storylines seemed clumsy, taking away from the cooler plots. Too many flashbacks X-men Legacy: Salvage not enough context makes for bulky reading. Perhaps it was the fact that large portions of this story arc are supplemented in other comics not i N. Perhaps it was the fact that large portions of this story arc are supplemented in other X-men Legacy: Salvage not included in this collection. Of course there were moments of gallantry and self-sacrifice, but always in the midst of a seemingly hurried narrative. I would only recommend this to diehard X-Men fans. They've been doing this for decades and it does not work. She is simply not that interesting! Adding and changing her powers, love interests, etc. Jan 01, Volsung added it Shelves: comics. Hooray for a well-characterized return of Gambit and Rogue. Feb 03, Mike rated it liked it. Still with the flashback panels, and I'm starting to get numb to the self-indulgence of it all. I like the Rogue storyline tho, and once in a while Carey comes up with a funny or profound line. But really I know I'm just catching up, biding my time until the next big "event" story that's coming in the X-verse. This feels like I'm just doing my chores - fun enough while I'm in it, but not that memorable other than the changes in character that the final two issues create. I guess, reading Still with the random flashback panels, and I'm starting to get numb to the self-indulgence of it all. I guess, reading other reviews, I should say I too like the depth that Carey is adding to the Rogue and Gambit characters, tidying them up so they'll be ready for some high-speed drag racing when someone else wants to put them into action. It'd be nice if Xavier wasn't being treated X-men Legacy: Salvage a blank slate X-men Legacy: Salvage you can do whatever you like with him. Aug 20, Judah Radd rated it it was amazing Shelves: marvel-comics. What we get is three layers of awesome. Professor X | CBR

When you look back at the history of the X-Men, certain writers stand out. These are writers who settled down into the book, who produced definitive works that shaped and transformed the X-Men mythos, and who developed much of the continuity fans love. Top of the list is the legendary Chris Claremont X-men Legacy: Salvage, who — between and — penned no less than consecutive issues. Carey showed great skill with characters, mixing things up in ways that startled the fans prominent among these being the romance between and . In an interview with ComicsverseCarey explained how he reconciled all these different portrayals:. The long answer is about idealism as opposed to sainthood. is the most obvious example, but you can draw up the list yourself. In a strange way, given that Xavier has been so central to the X-Men narrative for so long, there had never been a time when an X-men Legacy: Salvage run focused so X-men Legacy: Salvage upon him. Still, it surprised no fans when Carey soon returned to his personal favourite…. X-men Legacy: Salvage Book Herald is reader-supported. And yet, his speciality was to draw upon the characters, and often the continuity was worked in so very X-men Legacy: Salvage — for example, the history between Xavier and Amelia Voghtwhile never explored directly, was hinted at brilliantly. Perhaps most notably, though, Carey cast his net wide; no villain was too obscure for him to use them he brought a starving Emplate to , he considered Exodus his favourite villain, and he brought into focus. And, while he kept some key X-Men in the scene — including Rogue, Magneto, Xavier, and Gambit — he also worked carefully to give younger mutants such as , and Indra their moments, however fleeting. For fans of Charles Xavier and Rogue in particular, he presents what many readers view as a masterclass. He is a fan of the X-Men, and it shows with the care and commitment with which he writes them. Here with Carey… it was just X-men Legacy: Salvage random unimportant images that had no real meaning, the Professor pretty much pulling a Deus ex machina and Gambit doing nothing but just kissing her. In fact, it went a million steps backwards for Gambit and Rogue, all because of this disgusting hack…. There was no rekindling of the relationship between Rogue and Mag… note how you are not going into details on X-men Legacy: Salvage at all… I wonder why??? The 1 and none of them were personal.
