It’s exciting to see the kids here.’ – LIZ ELMORE in railroad Boys & Girls Club is back track death The Daily Journal A total of two suspects have been arrest- ed in connection with the body found in the railroad siding north of Perkins Street Saturday morning. Brandon Adam Pinola, 22, of Ukiah, was arrested at 4:35 p.m. Monday on suspicion of the murder of Gerald Knight, 51, also of Ukiah. Pinola was booked into jail on sus- picion of murder and remains in the Mendocino County Jail without bail. Another suspect in the case, Alva Thomas “Sunny” Reeves, 38, a transient, was also arrested without incident later the same day and was booked into jail, where he is being held without bail. Reeves was seen at around 10 p.m. Monday walking into the Quest Mart at 915 N. State St. by Ukiah Police Department Officer Tyler Schapmire, who was on rou- tine patrol. Reeves and Knight were long-term acquaintances and were seen together by witnesses for several days prior to Knight’s death, according to police reports. UPD Captain Trent Taylor said Pinola was taken into custody while in court for an unrelated matter and lodged in jail. “Through continued investigation, the Ukiah Police detectives located physical evidence and obtained witness statements See ARREST, Page A-10 Marijuana Sarah Baldik/The Daily Journal Ashley Mills, 6, shows off her artistic side Thursday afternoon in the arts and crafts room at the newly reopened Boys and Girls Club at the Alex Rorabaugh Center in south Ukiah. raids in RV and Willits The Daily Journal A series of large-scale marijuana grow operations were raided in both Willits and Redwood Valley earlier this week. TIGERS 7 | GIANTS 2 (WED.) Roughed up early Polanco leads Tigers past Giants By JANIE McCAULEY Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO — Jim Leyland didn’t expect Detroit to fix things over night. The Tigers’ man- ager sure is thrilled to see his team back on track and on a little roll. Placido Polanco had four hits, drove in two runs and scored three as the Detroit Tigers knocked strug- gling San Francisco starter Barry Zito out after only two innings and took the rubber game from the Giants 7-2 on Wednesday. Armando Galarraga (7-2) didn’t allow an earned run in six innings and struck out five to win his third straight start and fourth consecutive decision since a defeat to Minnesota on May 23. “He’s been a savior so far,” Leyland said. “Obviously he’s given us innings. Not only has he given us innings he’s won games. That’s a bonus, no question about it.” Marcus Thames had his stretch of consecutive games with a home run end at five, which tied a Tigers record. Still, his last eight hits have been homers. Zito (2-11) saw the end to his three-game winning streak against the Tigers, picking up his first loss to Detroit since Aug. 7, 2003 — the year after his AL Cy Young Award season with the Oakland Athletics. Zito still looks nothing like his old self. “He was all over the place,” Thames said. “I’ve never seen him like that.”
