hobbs Back to Issue 7 "Eat it alive and swallow it whole!": Resavoring Cannibal Holocaust as a Mockumentary by Carolina Gabriela Jauregui ©2004 "The worst returns to laughter" Shakespeare, King Lear We all have an appetite for seeing, an appétit de l'oeuil as Lacan explains it: it is through our eyes that we ingest the Other, the world.1 And in this sense, what better way to introduce a film on anthropophagy, Ruggero Deodato's 1979 film, Cannibal Holocaust, than through the different ways it has been seen.2 It seems mankind has forever been obsessed with the need to understand the world through the eyes, with the need for visual evidence. From Thomas the Apostle, to Othello's "ocular proof," to our television "reality shows," as the saying goes: "Seeing is believing." We have redefined ourselves as Homo Videns: breathers, consumers, dependants, and creators of images. Truth, in our society, now hinges on the visual; it is mediated by images. Thus it is from the necessity for ocular proof that Cinéma Vérité, Direct Cinema, documentary filmmaking and the mockumentary or mock-documentary genre stem. It is within this tradition that the Italian production Cannibal Holocaust inserts itself, as a hybrid trans-genre film. To better understand this film, I will not only look at it as a traditional horror film, but also as a contemporary mockumentary satire that presents itself as "reality" and highlights the spectator’s eye/I’s primal appetite. In the manner of Peter Watkins' film Culloden, Deodato's film is intended to confuse the audience's -

Abstract This work presents my PhD thesis about the influence of anonymity on par- ticipation in online environments. The starting point of this research was the observation of the design process of an online platform for informal caregivers. I realized that there is no knowledge about the practical effects that an anony- mous identity system would have. This thesis contains the subsequent literature review, which has been synthesized into a model that shows which participation factors might be influenced by anonymity. Three studies on existing online en- vironments have been conducted: One on Youtube, where there was a change in the comment system forbidding anonymous comments; one on Quora, where users can choose to answer questions anonymously; and one on Hacker News, where users choose how many identity factors they want to present and which name they use. -

Address Munging: the practice of disguising, or munging, an e-mail address to prevent it being automatically collected and used as a target for people and organizations that send unsolicited bulk e-mail address. Adware: or advertising-supported software is any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising material to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used. Some types of adware are also spyware and can be classified as privacy-invasive software. Adware is software designed to force pre-chosen ads to display on your system. Some adware is designed to be malicious and will pop up ads with such speed and frequency that they seem to be taking over everything, slowing down your system and tying up all of your system resources. When adware is coupled with spyware, it can be a frustrating ride, to say the least. Backdoor: in a computer system (or cryptosystem or algorithm) is a method of bypassing normal authentication, securing remote access to a computer, obtaining access to plaintext, and so on, while attempting to remain undetected. The backdoor may take the form of an installed program (e.g., Back Orifice), or could be a modification to an existing program or hardware device. A back door is a point of entry that circumvents normal security and can be used by a cracker to access a network or computer system. Usually back doors are created by system developers as shortcuts to speed access through security during the development stage and then are overlooked and never properly removed during final implementation. -

Jeffrey Weise: Timeline Compiled by Peter Langman, Ph.D. I have not found a source that chronicles the history of Jeffrey and his family. In order to fill this gap, this document was compiled from a variety of sources to provide a general chronology of the family’s life. In many cases, exact dates of events are not known, so approximate years and months are indicated. There is a lack of agreement among the sources as to why Jeffrey was not attending school at the time of the attack. Multiple sources are listed with the discrepant testimonies provided. 8 August 1988 Jeffrey James Weise was born in Minneapolis to Joanne Elizabeth Weise and Daryl Allen Lussier, Jr. (parents never married). Mother lived in Minneapolis, father on Red Lake reser- vation. Jeffrey lived mostly with his father for first three years.1 November 1988 Mother gave Jeffrey to father to raise when he was 3 months old. 2 1991 Jeffrey lived with his father and father’s parents until he was three years old. Then mother took him to live with her in Twin Cities.3 June 1993 Mother booked into Ramsey County jail for driving while intoxicated.4 17 July 1993 Father married Roma Jean Ryan at Red Lake.5 Fall 1996 Jeffrey moved with mother to Shakopee, Minnesota, and entered third grade at Pearson Elementary School. Joanne Weise was living with Timothy Troy Desjarlait.6 Jeffrey attended Pearson until 1998.7 1996 Daphne Desjarlait born to Joanne Weise and Timothy Desjarlait.8 1997 Sebastian Desjarlait born to Joanne Weise and Timothy Desjarlait.9 21 July 1997 Jeffrey’s father killed himself by shooting himself in the chest during armed standoff with tribal police on Red Lake reservation.10 The standoff with police occurred at the father’s home and lasted for “days.”11 September 1997 Jeffrey started fourth grade in Shakopee, but that month the family moved to Chaska, Min- nesota.12 27 June 1998 Joanne Weise married Timothy Desjarlait on Red Lake reservation (reportedly had moved to reservation shortly after move to Chaska).13 Late September 1998 Jeffrey attended fifth grade at Bluff Creek Elementary School. -

They are assembled for the annual State of the Union address. PRESIDENT is at podium. PRESIDENT As I stand before this great body and look out at the faces of those who have dedicated themselves to this great nation, I can say with confidence that this nation is strong and on certain footing. He stops and abruptly his expression changes. Hands grasping the edges of the podium, he looks down lost in thought. When he looks back up, gone is the confident smile, the twinkle in his eye. PRESIDENT cont. Who am I trying to fool here? You, my respected Congressmen? Some of the finest legislators to ever hold public office? The excellent justices of the Supreme Court who preside over the greatest legal institution in history? Myself? No, I’m not here to try to fool anyone. These are times unlike any this nation has ever seen. So I’ll tell you exactly what the state of our union is. It’s a fucking mess! A deathly silence fills the entire congressional chamber. Blank faces and unfocused eyes everywhere. Then, all at once, everyone immediately stands up and starts giving him a wild standing ovation. The President smiles and waves. Finally, they sit back down. PRESIDENT cont. So here’s what we’re gonna do. I want you all to look down at the floor. Now pull your pant legs up over your calves. What do you see?
