  • Local Landscape Areas- Draft
Shetland Local Development Plan Consultation Draft 2014 Supplementary Guidance Landscape Areas Local DRAFT LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN Supplementary Guidance - Local Landscape Areas- Draft The Shetland Local Development Plan (the Plan), together with any Supplementary Guidance, sets out the policies and criteria against which planning applications submitted in Shetland will be considered. This Supplementary Guidance sets out detailed policy advice to help you meet the requirements of the Plan. It is therefore recommended that it is read in conjunction with the policies in the Plan and any other Supplementary Guidance relevant to the type of development proposed. The purpose of this Supplementary Guidance (SG) is to provide additional information and maps of the proposed Local Landscape Areas. Introduction The purpose of the Local Landscape Areas is to ensure sympathetic siting and design of new development within the Local Landscape Areas, (LLA). It is not the intention of the Council to prevent development, but to encourage appropriate consideration of the landscape. The introduction of Local Landscape Areas will help to protect and enhance some of Shetlands unique environment and may provide direction for access and tourism. The information used to devise the Local Landscape Areas SG has been produced from the research conducted by Land Use Consultants. The full report including the research methodology can be seen in Shetland Islands Local Landscape Designation Review. The proposed Local Landscape Areas are; 1. Ronas Hill 2. Nibon and Mangaster 3. Vementry and West Burrafirth 4. Papa Stour and Sandness 5. Walls and Vaila 6. Culswick and Westerwick 7. Weisdale 8. Scat Ness and Sumburgh Head 9.

  • SHETLAND LITERATURE and the IDEA of COMMUNITY Laurence Graham
SHETLAND LITERATURE AND THE IDEA OF COMMUNITY Laurence Graham Does Shetland have what can be called 'a literature'? Is literature, in fact, not too grandiose a word for the few odds and ends of verse and prose that make up Shetland writing? And if there is, how good is it, and what does it have to say to us to-day, what light does it throw on our past and present? These are some of the questions this essay will try to address. What about the quality of the writing? Can Shetland compare for instance with Orkney which has produced such famous authors as Eric Linklater, Edwin Muir and latterly George Mackay Brown? It could be argued of course that these three Orcadian writers all chose to write in English - giving them ready access to a national, indeed international public, whereas most Shetland writers have opted for their native dialect, and consequently a more restricted, local readership. But that has not prevented the perceptive outsider from appreciating the true worth of our dialect writing. For example, Neil Gunn, the distinguished Scottish novelist, said of Vagaland's poems: 'When the ends of the earth and their savagery worry too much I can take up his poems - They have the Northland in them, the space and the spareness, and they take me back to my beginnings. I find the dialect attractive and not too difficult ... and always the rocks and the seas, the maas and the divers, the strength and the austerity' (Robertson l 975:xx). In fact it could be argued that Shetland has produced a wider range of writers than Orkney and that the best work of at least a dozen of our local writers should be rightfully included in any representative anthology of Scottish literature over the last hundred years.

AA MY MINDIN: MOVING THROUGH LOSS IN THE POETIC LITERARY TRADITION OF SHETLAND Roseanne Watt Division of Literature and Languages University of Stirling Scotland UK Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2018 Abstract Shetland literature is often defined by loss – the loss of language, of a way of life, of a place within time itself. Shetland writers have historically responded to this landscape of loss through a stringent need for the preservation of tradition. This thesis is an attempt to understand that response, and to frame my own creative practice in dialogue with this tradition, whilst trying to create something new within it. In particular I will discuss the influence of Norn on this narrative of loss, and how the language came to be framed in death has contributed to this atmosphere of loss and desire for preservation. The Shetland poet Robert Alan Jamieson has written eloquently and insightfully on these matters; as such, the bulk of this thesis is given over to a critical reading of his collections, with a view to understanding his response, and through this coming to an understanding my own. Part of this thesis is creative practice, and the films produced in that regard can be viewed online following instructions contained within; the final part of the thesis is a critical framing of this practice using the framework built by the thesis prior to that point. 1 Acknowledgements Firstly, to my supervisors, Professor Kathleen Jamie and Dr Sarah Neely; your encouragement, knowledge, enthusiasm and kindness over the years has helped me gain confidence in my own abilities as a writer and filmmaker, allowing me to produce work which I am very proud of.
