Northmaven Geology SHETLAND HERITAGE TRAILS Discover Northmaven... In the North Mainland of Shetland you have an incredible and 4 5 fascinating geological variety within your grasp. Discover some of the oldest rocks in Scotland; take a walk into the heart of an ancient 6 volcano and marvel at the most dramatic storm sculpted coastline 1 that Shetland has to offer! 3 1 Eshaness- Shetlands volcanic past! 2 420 million years ago, three ancient continents were colliding with one another. Shetland was part of one of these continents. As they collided, colossal amounts of heat and pressure were produced as the bedrock of the continents crushed together. Molten magma generated during this collision forced its way to the Earth’s surface where it erupted to form volcanoes. Find out more with the ‘Shetland’s Volcano’ trail pack - available at Braewick Cafe! 1 Eshaness Coastline This battered coastline has experienced countless winter storms which have revealed the different stages of the volcanic eruptions. Layer upon layer of volcanic ash and lava flows can be seen exposed in the dramatic cliffs. 2 Stennes Beach Shetland’s “gems” can be found at Stennes. Hiding amongst the pebbles on the beach are agates. They form when hot fluids filled with dissolved minerals circle through Earth’s crust. These fluids deposit their minerals in gas bubbles within cooled volcanic rocks. How many agates can you find? See if you can spot us on the beach but please leave us there for others to enjoy! www.geoparkshetland.org.uk Northmaven Geology SHETLAND HERITAGE TRAILS 3 Walls Boundary Fault 4 Fethaland This is Britain’s best example of a major Rock ‘slices’ of different shear fault.

  • Northmavine Visitor Survey Report
Northmavine Visitor Survey Report Analysis by Mark Ratter Commissioned by Northmavine Development Company Tourism Sub-group Acknowledgements Thank you to the Northmavine Development Company for giving me the opportunity to contribute to this Visitor Survey project as well as other aspects of input regarding the promotion and development of tourism within the area. More specifically, thanks to Northmavine’s Tourism Group for their continued input, information, knowledge and enthusiasm – with particular mention going to Maree Hay. A special thank you to Ingrid Laurenson for her initial work regarding the Northmavine Visitor Survey, providing a comprehensive and focussed questionnaire for visitors to complete. Additionally, the Northmavine Tourism Action Plan proved to be a very handy reference point. Finally, a thank you to those who helped to produce the visitor data. Firstly, the tourism businesses who provided the channels through which visitors could access the questionnaire. Secondly, the visitors themselves for providing the data which will hopefully create the way for a focussed approach to tourism within Northmavine for the future. 2 Abstract The purpose of this report: • Gain an understanding of Northmavine’s visitor base • Identify the current facility priorities, the current facility gaps and the potential developments for facilities • Identify potential visitor markets for the future • Try to get an idea of the impact (both positive and negative) of tourism on Northmavine’s economy, culture and environment. From this, try to
