Study Guide Prepared by Rosanna Forrest, Dramaturg About The Playwright Kate Fodor lives in Brooklyn, New York. HANNAH AND MARTIN, which is her first play, won the Kennedy Center's Roger L. Stevens Award and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. It will be published in an anthology due out from Smith & Kraus this year. Kate would like to thank her husband, her parents and New York's Epic Theatre Center. Hannah Arendt Hannah Arendt, was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1906, the only child of secular Jewish parents. While Arendt remained close to her mother throughout her life, her father passed away when she was only seven years of age. She entered Marburg University in 1924, where she studied philosophy with burgeoning philosopher, Martin Heidegger. Her romantic relationship with Heidegger began in 1925 during which time he was creating his greatest work, Being and Time. The relationship between Heidegger and Arendt ended the following year, and Arendt moved to Heidelberg to study with Karl Jaspers, the existentialist philosopher and friend of Heidegger. Under Jasper's guidance, she wrote her dissertation on the concept of love in St. Augustine's thought. Throughout the years, Arendt remained close to Jaspers, although the influence of Heidegger's phenomenology was to prove the greater in its lasting influence upon her work. In 1929, Arendt met Gunther Stern, a young Jewish philosopher, with whom she became romantically involved, and subsequently married. After her dissertation was published, she delved into Jewish and Zionist politics, which had become a focus for her in 1926. -

1 JEWISH WOMEN OF THE BERLIN SALONS The Berlin salons which developed in the late eighteenth century owed both their existence and the form of their development to Jewish women. These early salons were the result of a unique interrelation between the German enlightenment and Haskalah on the one hand and, on the other, young, educated Jewish women from well-to-do families, who were searching for a new role in life outside the patriarchal structures of their families. These salons have variously been criticized as a symptom of failing Jewish tradition or welcomed as a phenomenon of emancipation and acculturation. Whatever one’s attitude, their importance as highlights of the salon culture and for the process of women’s emancipation in Germany cannot be denied. While in Paris by the mid-eighteenth century, salons had become a traditional social institution and even bourgeois ladies had advanced to be salonnières, Berlin society, in comparison, was very old-fashioned. The social classes remained strictly separated (with a very exclusive, but largely poor aristocracy at the top); Jews were discriminated against by Prussian law and socially stigmatized. It took a long time for an educated middle class to develop, especially as there was no university in Berlin until 1810. Middle-class women were not supposed to engage in cultural activities, but only in their religious and household duties. The rich but small Jewish upper class in Berlin had a protected status in exchange for their financial and economic services to the crown. Their lifestyle after the end of the Seven Years’ War (1763) became aristocratic. -

Send in the Clones Chaplin Imitators from Stage to Screen, from Circus to Cartoon Ulrich Ruedel The Chaplin craze of the teens is often cited as one of the main indicators of the unprecedented popularity of Chaplin's little tramp. Chaplin imitators, cartoons, songs were abound. While Chaplin may indeed qualify as the most imitated character in film history, this "sincerest form of flattery" was not limited to him. Indeed, one of the historically most remarkable Chaplin imitations, that of former Chaplin understudy Stan Laurel, was part of a Keystone Trio stage act, which also included likenesses of Mabel Normand and Chester Conklin. Nor does the phenomenon of comic clones end there. Throughout film history, we find carbon copies of then- popular film clowns, sometimes unidentified today, often though probably quite justly forgotten.1 1 The Museum of Modern Art, for example, holds footage of an unidentified Snub Pollard imitator; imitations of Harold Lloyd's glasses character have been reported, and Wolfram Tichy's 1979 Harold Lloyd bioography presents an unidentified photo of what might have been such an imitator. Europe had their own, unique comedy success in the 20s and 30s, in the Danish comedy tramp duo of Fy og Bi / Long and Short / Pat & Patachon, and this author's research into this team (easily rivaling in popularity Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd in countries like Germany and Russia) has so far confirmed at east four imitators, or "parodists," asppearing well into the 1950s. The Three Stooges are unique in this regard as their likenesses can claim a certain degree of legitimacy, either having gone through the same school as the original trio, Stooge inventor Ted Healy's act, that is, or in a couple instances even having the privilege of featuring former original Stooges. -

(MIS-)UNDERSTANDING ANTI-SEMITISM AND JEWISH IDENTITY From Bernard Lazare to Hannah Arendt by Milen Gotchev Jissov A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada April, 2009 Copyright © Milen Gotchev Jissov, 2009 ISBN:978-0-494-48494-4 Abstract This study examines the responses of European intellectuals since the 1880s to an increasingly virulent and organized anti-Semitism in Europe, and the ways in which they sought to understand the character and origins of the hatred, and to fathom and work out the problems, terms and possibilities for Jewish identity. Focusing on the French figures Bernard Lazare and Marcel Proust from the time of the Dreyfus Affair and then on the Frankfurt School of social theory and Hannah Arendt from the period around and after the Second World War, the thesis argues that these thinkers created a common historical-psychological discourse on anti-Semitism, which attempted to confront, comprehend and explain the historically critical issues of anti-Semitism and Jewish identity. The study explores the discourse’s fundamental assumptions, insights, and arguments regarding the origins, character, and magnitude of anti-Semitism. It also analyzes its contentions concerning the contradictions, sources, and alternatives for Jewish identity. But, more, it claims that, despite their frequent perceptiveness, these figures’ interpretations of the two concerns proved limited, deficient, even deeply flawed. The thesis seeks to show that its intellectuals’ attempt to understand the twin issues was hence a failure to grasp and interpret them adequately, and to resolve them. -
