Selsley Community Group Newsletter – July 2016 SCG News: Selsley Cricket Club vs Selsley (Community Group) cricket match ended as a draw, with a little help from the weather. So, next year….round two. Lost and Found in Selsley: thanks to Tristam for finding and returning the missing cat which is now safely home. New Bus Service – Stroud Shopper – pick up from home… please see attached poster and pass the message on. Thanks to all our volunteer quiz setters: Beverley Daniels, Sarah Watts, Rachel Jarman, Jim Watson and to Alan Ford & Penny Prince for September’s quiz. On the common: are the orchids, cows & nightingales not forgetting our illusive glow worms, it’s also prime time for ticks. So please check yourselves, your dogs & cats and use a remover tool (from the vets or pet shop) or rumour has it douse them in neat alcohol...as incomplete removal can lead to infections & Lyme disease. Drains: with all this lovely rain, its ideal weather for checking the drains – so please if you notice blocked or overflowing drains or cattle grids please contact SCG “Drains – urgent!” A friendly thanks to the Leyhill Gardening Group for returning to clear the verges, reinstate & tidy the pavements to full width and more. Want to make a difference to your local community, willing and able to attending monthly meetings? Represent our area as a Parish Councillor (co-opted). Guerrilla Gardening or Green fingered? Help with Selsley in Bloom – Contact Sarah @ the Bell Inn. We have plans for some guerrilla planting and clearing. Further details will be in the next newsletter.

Selsley in bloom, hanging basket competition: Judging will take place the last week of August. Baskets can be flowering or vegetable and there will be prizes for: Prettiest basket, most innovative and a juniors’ under 15 class for a pot or basket. Entry is free you simply need to email with ‘Hanging basket’ in the subject and include your address in the message. Best of luck! Happy to fix, fill and paint? Our Cricket Club Pavilion needs you! So if you are interested and you haven’t already contacted us email us with “Glow worm” as a Subject. Tuesday 12th July Pub Walk (2 hour) along the Severn, to the Red Lion at Arlingham and the option of a pub lunch. We leave the Bell at 9.40am or meet in the car park at the Red lion Arlingham for a 10 am start. No need to book but if you would like to share a lift please email Sarah - [email protected] by Saturday 9th July.

Thursday 14th July – Ale & Pie Night 6.30 -9.30pm at the Bell Inn. Steak & mushroom pie with champ potato and cabbage, plus a pint of Selsley Best for £12. Book with a £5 deposit at the Bell Inn.

Saturday 30th July, 7 for 7.30 pm Three Course Supper charity event in aid of the Cricket Club and Church, in the Selsley Scout Hut, with raffle and quizzes with prizes. £15 per ticket. Bring your own wine and/or soft drinks (glasses will be provided).

Sunday 31st July, the Selsley Cricket Club Annual President’s Day match @Selsley from 2.15 pm. All welcome to watch and picnic. Please bring your own picnics, rugs and chairs.

Thursday 18th August - An Evening with Nyetimber, the award winning producers of quite possibly the finest British sparkling wine. Four course meal with wines to complement £60, £20 deposit places going quickly contact [email protected] to book.

And for the bank holiday weekend… Sunday 28th August – Gin Festival at the Bell Inn 5pm -9pm and a chance to raid Sarah’s fine new cabinet. Entry is by ticket only and they appear to be “going down rather well” so it worth booking quickly. £20 per ticket which includes 5 tastings and you can always buy a bottle or a trio of miniatures to take home if you find something special.

Sunday 4th September Pub Quiz. 7pm Chilli & Rice with Vegetarian option. £6 with £1 going directly to SCG.

These are popular so to avoid disappointment, help with catering and ensure everyone has a seat, please book via the Bell by Thursday 1st September. Paint your bikes yellow and get out your bunting ….as on Thursday 8th September the Tour of Britain cycle race will come through Selsley on the B4066… it’s our very own back yard.

November Something to look forward: Want to learn how to wine taste? This could be you!

Wine tasting Course (WSET Foundation course level 1 certified!) three whole evenings of fun, enjoyable learning, tasting and good food. Learn to recognize, choose, match and store wine with Laithwaites & The Bell Inn. The dates are Wednesday 9th, 16th and 23rd November 6 – 9.30 pm. The cost is £90 inclusive of the £30 exam fee. Please contact the Bell Inn for details or to secure your place and pay the deposit.

Tues 22nd November – Beetle drive – Hot off the Press. A few extra bits for our local clubs and societies…you might be interested in. £7 Villager fish and chips. A small change in time it’s now Fridays 5 – 7pm for cooked to order takeaway – not to be eaten on the premises. Order by phone 753801 and collect or go into the Bell Inn place your order and have a drink while you wait.

The Bell Inn is now open all day on Monday through to Saturday. It’s also now open Sunday evening for drinks only and from the second weekend of July the barbeque will be fired up!
