Camp Vroman’s Summer Reading Program 2015

Welcome to Camp Vroman’s, a summer reading program by Vroman’s Bookstore! Create an Awesome Mix list of books you read this summer. Think of it as the soundtrack of your summer… but with books!

How to Be an Official Vroman’s Camper This Summer (June 1 – Sept. 1)  List TEN books you read this summer on an official Awesome Mix bookmark.  Write at least THREE liner notes and turn them into the Children’s Dept.  Attend at least ONE event this summer and check in with a camp counselor (bookseller).  Sign up at Vroman’s anytime after June 1 and claim your prizes as early as August 1.

What books can I read? You can read any books that interest you this summer! But if you’re looking for suggestions, we’ll have books on display in the Vroman’s Children’s Department and our camp counselors (booksellers) would love to help you come up with ideas.

What are liner notes? Liner notes are a term that musicians use for notes they have about songs. We liked that idea, so we wanted liner notes for books. Think of it as a short book review (maybe one paragraph) about what you thought of the book. For ideas of what to write, think about words (such as fast-paced, funny, scary, heart-breaking) that describe what the book was like or how you felt about it. Drop these off anytime over the summer, and we’ll add your notes to our Awesome Mix Wall of Fame.

Can I participate at Vroman’s Hastings Ranch location? Absolutely! We’ve got great camp counselors (booksellers) at Hastings Ranch, and they will also be recommending books and tracking your progress all summer long! In addition to any special events they may have this summer, they host a story/craft time with Gwen the Great at 11:30am on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. Plus, make your own little book at their ZINE WORKSHOP the 3rd Saturday of each month from 11:00am – 4:00pm. What events do you have? Vroman’s regularly offers author events for children’s & YA titles. Check our website (vromansbookstore.com) or monthly newsletter for upcoming author readings and signings. For little ones, we offer Storytime with Mr. Steve every Wednesday and Saturday at 10am. For teens, we have a monthly YA book club called Mischief Managers, which meets at 4pm on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Also, this summer, we’re doing these special Camp Vroman’s events:  Scary Stories with Mr. Steve – Thursday, June 25, 6pm o Come prepared to hear scary stories told by our Mr. Steve while you munch on tasty s'mores. We'll also create our own terrifying tales. There isn't an age limit, but this event is not for children who scare easily!  Jam in Your Jammies – Friday, July 24, 6pm o Wear your favorite jammies and come to Vroman's for a special jam session! Listen in as Nolan and Sarah from the Vroman's Children's Department share music and stories. If you have an instrument, you're welcome to play a song for the group. Or you can read aloud your favorite book paragraph or short poem.  Flash Read Mob – Sunday, August 16, 4pm o At a specific time, we’ll make a SOUND over the intercom at Vroman’s. At that time, all Vroman’s Campers should sit down on the floor and start reading whatever book they have with them. We’ll read for five minutes, and then you’ll hear another SOUND that signals the end of the flash read mob.

What are the prizes? Once you’ve completed all of your Camp Vroman’s activities, bring in your Awesome Mix bookmark (with all of your summer reads listed) to the Vroman’s Children’s Department. We’ll check to make sure you’ve got everything, including attending an event and turning in three liner notes, and then you’ll receive your camp prize pack:

 A $5 gift card to Vroman’s  A gift certificate or special item at another local establishment  Advance reading copies of books  And you get your bookmark back!

We’ll be handing out prizes starting August 1 (through September 1), so take your time and enjoy your Awesome Mix picks all summer long!

How do I find out what other people are reading? Stop by the bookstore, where we’ll be posting campers’ liner notes of great books all summer long. Also, you can share your Awesome Mix picks via social media using the hashtag #CampVromans. We’ll be posting our favorite reads on Twitter under our usernames @vromansupstairs and @vromans.
