Stage of Hero’s Journey Use this worksheet to write notes while reading. Note: The Journey is not always in “order”. The Hero in His Ordinary World-- Unusual birth / home life; usually considered “odd”. Hero has limited awareness of a problem. Call to Adventure—a problem is brought to light; Hero has increased awareness of the problem; called away from his ordinary world Refusal of the Call—fear of change, learning the truth about the past, receiving special item. Hero is reluctant to change; faced with decision to accept or deny the quest. Meeting the Mentor— mentor/allies; helper/ supernatural aid prepares the hero to face the unknown; encourages Hero to overcome reluctance. Crossing the Threshold— Hero commits to the adventure and is willing to face the consequences of venturing from Ordinary World to Special World. Tests, Challenges, Enemies —Hero’s training, toil, and knowledge come into play now. Hero faces challenges and is tested. Hero doubts success. Approach the Inmost Cave- Hero prepares to face the greatest fear, battle, enemy. This can also be a time for romance or jokes before the big battle scene. The Supreme Ordeal—this is the life or death battle when the Hero faces his greatest fear
The Reward—the Hero has faced “death” and survived; Hero earns the reward that he’s been seeking.
The Road Back—Hero must recommit to completing the Journey and accept the Road Back to the Ordinary World. The Road Back is not easy, though
The Resurrection—Hero faces most dangerous life and death ordeal; can represent a cleansing; rebirth/transformation; saves humanity, etc.
Return With Elixer—Hero has been resurrected, purified and has earned the right to be accepted back into his Ordinary World; shares the elixir with other to make the Ordinary World a better place.
