School Attributes The manner in which we prepare students at Academy Park High School is informed by four attributes: (1) Dedicated faculty who will hold themselves to, at minimum, to the same standards as the students we teach; (2) Positive relationships developed and nurtured between and among adults and students; (3) A high level of rigor included in instructional practices via standards aligned and contextually driven instruction; and (4) Connecting positive relationships with effective instruction for positive academy RESULTS!

Course Description: . Recognize situations that require professional health service and where to acquire these services. . Identify situations where research and medical advances have changed the outlook on health problems. . Describe steps to resolve conflicts among individuals. . Identify food choices that decrease risks of disease and promote achievement of health goals. . Trace the importance of the immune system to prevent risk of disease. . Recognize the importance of regular examinations and self-examinations in detecting and treating disease. . Recognize the importance of prenatal care to both mother and child. . Describe the short term and long term effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs in individuals as well as adverse consequences on the community. . Trace physical, mental, emotional and social changes that occur throughout life.

Course Competencies/ Learning Objectives Students who successfully complete Health will be competent in the following areas:  Demonstrate ability to discern when health situations require services and where to go to receive those services.  Describe current events related to the health field and their impact on an individual’s health.  Identify and explain steps to resolve individual conflicts.  Analyze factors that impact healthy nutritional choices.  Evaluate methods to prevent or reduce risk of disease.  Identify components of regular examinations and self-examinations and their importance in disease prevention and detection.

Health Course Syllabus

 Explain components of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy which may impact the mother and the unborn child.  Analyze prevention and intervention strategies in relation to adolescent and adult alcohol abuse, tobacco use, and drug abuse  Illustrate adverse health consequences of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use on the individual and the community.  Recognize and analyze factors that impact growth and development physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally throughout a lifetime.

Student Evaluation The grading system for the Health and Physical Education Department at Academy Park High School is as follows:

Tests, Projects, & Major Papers - 40% Quizzes, Classwork, & Minor Assignments - 30% Attendance & Class Participation - 20% (school wide) Homework - 10% (school wide)

The above areas will be used as the basis for 80% of your grade per semester. The midterm and/or final exam will constitute the remaining 20% of your grade per semester.

Attendance Policy Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience. Academy Park High School expects students to exercise good judgment regarding attendance and absences. Students will accept full responsibility for ensuring their work does not suffer because of absences. All students are expected to attend every scheduled class on time. Exceptions may be made for illness and valid emergencies.

Classroom Expectations 1. Please be in your seat and ready to begin when the late bell rings. 2. Have a pen/pencil and notebook with paper every class. 3. Participate to the best of your ability and follow the golden rule!!

Class Requirements 1. All school rules listed in the handbook will be in effect. 2. Late work will be accepted but points will be deducted for each day assignment is late. 3. If a student has an unexcused absence from school, they are not permitted to make-up the work they missed, including tests. 4. If a student has an excused absence, they have 3 days from the date of return to school to make-up any work.

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity Plagiarism is the practice of copying words, sentences, images, or ideas for use in written or oral assessments without giving proper credit to the source. Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of illegal help on anything that has been determined by the teacher to be an individual effort. Both are

2 considered serious offenses and will significantly affect your course grade. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct booklet for additional information.

Health Course Syllabus

Methodology A combination of lecture, class discussion, presentations, videos, cooperative learning, and problem- based learning will be used in this course. Grades will be determined by the satisfactory and timely completion of assignments. The grade of each assignment is based on the prerequisite given for each assignment. Below is an overview of topic/ units and major assessments/assignments for this course. Please note dates/timeframes are subject to change and are an estimate.
