FASET Matt Flagg, Online Editor helps entering students meet and begin forming bonds with other students, faculty, and administrators of the Tech com- munity. The plan to hold a separate social for gay and lesbian students not only defeats this purpose but also sets a precedent that segregation according to sexuality is acceptable. Throughout FASET, programs are presented which give students a glimpse of the overall Tech culture. The purpose is not for students to find their particular niche—this usually occurs once school begins. Having a separate GALA social at the same time as the SAC social detracts from the orientation goal of FASET and stratifies the freshman class. Because of the separate socials, homosexual students will be forced to choose between meeting straight or gay classmates, when they should have the option to mingle with both. The social should promote class unity, not segregation. GALA should consider holding a social for freshman at the beginning of fall semester when all students are on campus and the event will not conflict with FASET programming. If GALA is intent on having a social, they should work with FASET to coordinate a time when the socials do not conflict. This way, gay and lesbian students are not forced to choose between class unity and their sexuality. close to campus, like in Midtown, to ease the space shortage.
