Early College Historic Preservation II Class Rules, Policy & Syllabus Mr. Armstrong

Dear Parents and Students:

Welcome Back to Historic Preservation! Over the course of the next eighteen weeks the students will continue their study Historic Preservation, Architecture, Savannah and Georgia History. The course will include academic work, research, and hands on learning activities. Some of the topics that will be covered include:

 architectural styles and research of famous structures  Savannah History and Historical locations  the history of the preservation movement in Savannah and the United States  analysis of preservation and restoration theories  development of preservation and restoration associations & organizations  laws relating to the preservation and restoration  financial, economic and funding issues related to HP  historical research techniques  conservation and natural resources protection and preservation  park planning and renewal  model making (Bridge)  paint analysis and building assessment  brick and masonry restoration  stained glass restoration

I am looking forward to an exciting and constructive school semester. I will use a variety of teaching methods that will promote interest and learning. In addition to traditional academic instruction, the students will be exposed to a number of local professionals that are successful in vocations relating to historic preservation. I also have a number of “hands on” activities planned for the students to facilitate learning.

I. Materials Needed:

 Computer Jump Drive  Work Clothes (may be kept in HP Closet)  3 Ring Binder Notebook with Paper  Textbook  Writing Utensil (black or blue pen or pencil)

II. General Rules: In order to ensure success, I have a few general rules that I will expect the students and myself to follow. I believe in holding high school students responsible for their actions and the decisions that they make. I feel that every student has the right to positive learning environment and that these rules are for the benefit of the class as a whole. Failure to comply with these rules will have a negative effect on the students’ chance to succeed in this class. Please review this list:  Show respect to everyone (students, teacher, administration, staff, guests, etc.)  Follow all of the school and district rules  Be prompt to class; tardiness is unacceptable (use the restroom during class changes, not during class)  Enter the classroom like a student and maintain an academic environment (no running, yelling, roughhousing, or other similar actions)  Bring all school materials to class daily (3 – ring binder, notebook paper, textbook, writing utensil, jump drive, etc.)  Listen and follow directions the FIRST time  Make a positive contribution to class  No food or drink allowed  Keep the classroom and work areas clean  Return classroom materials and supplies to proper locations  Use your class time wisely  Maintain a positive attitude

III. Grading: Students will complete a variety of assignments throughout the semester and will be graded on the following scale: 90% - 100% -A 80%-89% - B 70% - 79% - C Below 70% - Failing

Daily assignments and homework will comprise 40% of the students’ grade. Tests, quizzes, projects, and class participation will make up the additional 60% of the students’ grade. All assignments must be submitted on the assigned due date. Late homework will be accepted for five school days for 50% credit. If the student has an excused absence it is their responsibility to complete any make up work. All students are advised to attend tutorial sessions as needed. Tutorials will be on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s from 2:50- 3:30.
