Assessing Student Learning

It is important to monitor and assess student learning. K12912 courses use various techniques to measure student mastery of the material and engagement in the course, including:  Computer-scored lesson quizzes  Computer-scored Unit and Course tests  Teacher-graded Unit tests  Teacher-graded worksheets and lab reports  Teacher-graded writing assignments  Asynchronous Threaded Discussions o Online text-based discussions between students about course content  Gradebook Details o Specifics about individual student performance on computer-scored assessments  Exam Statistics o Statistics regarding the performance of all students in a Learning Management System (LMS) classroom on a computer-scored assessment. Statistics are provided regarding overall assessment performance and performance on individual questions.  User Activity Reports o Indicates the time (in minutes) that a student spent in the LMS classroom on any given date and the time spent in each item of the left-hand navigation area.

Grades for computer-scored tests and quizzes are automatically entered into the Learning Management System (LMS) Gradebook and are immediately available to students.*

Teacher-graded assignments (TG) and tests are submitted by students to the LMS Dropbox. Teachers retrieve assignments from the Dropbox and use answer guides and rubrics found in the course (and visible only to teachers) to score and provide feedback on the assignments. The grade is then entered into the Gradebook by the teacher and the assignment is returned to the student. Teachers also grade threaded discussion activity by students using provide grading rubrics.**

* = The Gradebook Review Date for an assignment in the Course Scheduler of the LMS must be set to the current date or an earlier date for the grade to be visible to students. ** = Details on the type and location of answer keys and rubrics for different courses are found in the appendix of this document. SY10-11 Assessing Student Learning in K12912 Programs 3 Grading Information

Grading information is available within the Course Home area in the Learning Management System (LMS). Additional Answer Keys and Grading Rubrics are provided for teachers, as described below.

Grading Student Work

Your implementation of K12912 courses may include one or more teacher graded assignments or assessments and it is important for students to receive timely instructional feedback on work they have completed.

Knowing When Assignments Have Been Submitted At the bottom of the Course Home page of your course, you will find the What’s New tool. This tool will indicate activity that occurred in the course since the last time you entered the course. If the title of a Teacher Graded assignment or assessment (TGA) appears here, it indicates that at least one student submitted that item. By selecting the name of the course item, the names of the students who submitted this item display. Selecting Go to the right of the item title will take you directly to the items to be graded.

Finding Answer Keys Answer Keys are provided for all graded assignments in a course. Teacher Answer Keys are available within the lesson screen immediately below the assignment or assessment item and with the Unit Resources in the left-hand navigation area. Additional information about the specific areas to find answer keys and rubrics appears later in this document.

Grading Student Work Students submit Teacher Graded offline work via the course Dropbox tool. Students will save their work to their local computer, navigate to the Dropbox, select the Dropbox basket for that assignment, and upload their file and any comments for the teacher. Upon entering the Dropbox area, instructors will see a summary per basket of how many student submissions are currently in the Inbox for that basket, and in parenthesis next to that number, how many are yet unread by the instructor. Once a Basket is selected, the following tabs appear:  Inbox: Shows all submissions available for you to grade and return to students.  Outbox: Shows all submissions that you have returned to students.  No Submissions: Provides a list of students who have yet to submit the assignment. Clicking the Students button displays a summary of Dropbox entries by student. The Entire Inbox button displays all inbox entries.

Grading Student Work Two methods are commonly used to provide feedback to student work: embedded in the student’s original file or in the Comments area of the Dropbox.

Adding Feedback to Student’s File  Save the student’s submission to your computer  Edit the file with your feedback  Re-save the file containing feedback  Return file to student via the Dropbox and enter grade in Numerical Grade space

Adding Feedback to Dropbox Comments  Read and score assignment using answer key  Enter feedback in the Comments space in the Dropbox  Enter score in Numerical Grade space  Return file to student

Monitor Student Progress Monitoring student progress is important in any instructional environment. The LMS provides several powerful tools to monitoring student progress in their courses. You can review student progress at the individual student level as well as the assignment level.

Gradebook Selecting the Gradebook tab at the top of the Learning Management System (LMS) opens the course Gradebook. Selecting any student name will display his or her grades in the course so far. SY10-11 Assessing Student Learning in K12912 Programs 5

To examine grades for all students on assignments in a specific unit, select the Unit from the pull-down menu and select Go.

Exam and Question Statistics Selecting the bar chart icon at the top of an assignment column will display the Exam Statistics for that assignment. The second tab of the Exam Statistics allows you to pinpoint items on the test that many students struggled with on the assessment.

K12 Teacher Effectiveness Division ©2010 April 4, 2018 Gradebook Details Selecting the grade of any student assignment will open the Gradebook Details for the assignment, displaying the questions provided to the student, their answers, date and time the test was taken, and the length of time spent on the test.

User Activity User Activity within the Learning Management System (LMS) Gradebook displays data accurate to the previous 24 hours. Selecting User Activity in the Gradebook displays the amount of time (in minutes) that students have spent in each unit of the course. Selecting the unit number will display how much time every student spent in each unit item.

Selecting the name of any student displays the time that student spent in each area of the course. Expanding a unit title displays the time spent on each individual course item in the unit.

Choosing View by date from the drop-down menu and selecting Go allows you to see the amount of time each student spent in the course on any given day. You may select options to view a date range less than 31 days.

You can export any Gradebook activity to Microsoft Excel by selecting the Export View link found on the screen. SY10-11 Assessing Student Learning in K12912 Programs 7 Managing Academic Integrity

In any educational setting, managing academic integrity is an important part of an instructor’s job. K 12912 courses are no different.

By default, all computer- and teacher-scored tests and quizzes are open available to students as soon as your LMS classroom is available to them. It is important that you take steps to restrict access to these course items until they are required for student use. You can achieve this by:  Entering dates in the Restrict Before Date and Restrict After Date fields in the Course Scheduler area of the LMS.  Password protect computer-scored assessments, either removing the password or distributing it when access is needed: o Select  Author tab at the top of the left-hand navigation o Select  the title of the test or quiz o Select  Toolbox o Enter a password in the Password text box near the bottom of the screen. o Select  Save Changes o To remove the password, simply delete it from the Password text box and Save Changes.

The academic Integrity of open-ended and composition assignments often suffer from plagiarism. Use a service like www.turnitin.com to check for plagiarism. Alternately, you can use common search engines like www.google.com to check specific phrases that do not match the “voice” or skills level of a student.
