Hence, its proper funding towards the attainment of its lofty goals should be the collective responsibility of every stakeholders. This paper therefore discussed university education finance and cost sharing in Nigeria. The concepts of higher education and higher education finance were examined, followed by the philosophical and the perspectives of university education in Nigeria. The initiative of private funding of education vis-à-vis Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund) was brought to the fore. The paper further examined cost structure and sharing in Nigerian university system. It specifically described cost sharing as a shift in the burden of higher education costs from being borne exclusively or predominately by government, or taxpayers, to being shared with parents and students. Findings showed that Tetfund does not really provide for students directly. As regards students in private universities in Nigeria, and that private sector has never been involved in funding private universities. It was recommended among others that there is the need to re-engineer policies that will ensure effective financial accountability to prevent fiscal failure in Nigerian higher educational institutions, as well as policies which will ensure more effective community and individual participation such that government will be able to relinquish responsibility for maintaining large parts of the education system. -

To this effect, the effective management of this educational sector most especially at the private level in Nigeria becomes very decisive or essential. This paper therefore aims at examining the birth of private institution, historical development of university education, development of private university education, distribution of private universities, by geopolitical zone, ownership and location of private universities in Nigeria, 14 steps/processes in licensing of private universities, benefits accruable from a good university education management, reasons for the establishment, challenges confronting and solutions to the challenges and future of private universities in Nigeria were mentioned. Conclusion and recommendation were made that government should work hand in hand with proprietors of private universities by giving the opportunity to tertiary education trust fund grant-in so as to enhance and promote effective performance of the private universities in Nigeria. This paper, therefore, examines issues and challenges of securing admission to Universities in Nigeria. To do this, efforts were made to examine the operation of university education in Nigeria, the concept of access in education, the federal government policies on admission, major factors that influence and impede access to university among others were discussed in the paper. In conclusion the paper revealed that despite the increase in the number of universities, the rate of admission is low compared to the number of applicants. This is as a result of impediments to access and management of admission in the universities. Based on that, the paper recommends for the establishment of more universities to meet the needs of those yearning for University education. More academic staff should be employed, and to make admission twice in a year as it has been done in many countries. -

Received: June 1, 2020 Accepted: January 2, 2021 Online Published: January 14, 2021 doi:10.5430/ijhe.v10n3p178 URL: https://doi.org/10.5430/ijhe.v10n3p178 Abstract Private higher education is experiencing a rapid considerable growth for decades globally, particularly in Africa. In Nigeria, the history and the development of private higher education precisely universities which is the focus of this paper started 20 years ago with the establishment of Igbinedion University in Okada, Edo State in 1999, followed by two other universities; Babcock University, Ileshan Remo, Ogun State, and Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State in the same year all in the southern part of the country. Comparatively, the American University of Nigeria Yola was established as the first private university in northern region 4 years later. Two years after, another four universities emerged namely Al-hakima University Ilorin, Al-Qalam University Katsina, Bingham University Karu Abuja, and Kwararafa University Wukari Taraba State. As of December, 2020, there are 16 private universities in the northern region with 11 at northcentral, 3 in the northwest, and 2 in the northeast against 63 in the entire southern region comprasing three goe-politcal zones as well. This study intends to critically analyze the trend of these development to identify strategies, practices, and lessons learned between both regions for the spirit of educational development. -

The study was guided by seven research questions. The population included all the 127 University Librarians in Nigerian university libraries; while the sample used for the study included 58 university librarians cutting across the six geopolitical zones in the country and reflecting the ownership status of federal, state and private universities. An instrument called Software Adoption Questionnaire (SAQ) was developed by the researcher for this study. This SAQ was validated by three librarians from the University of Calabar. The data gathered and collated was analysed using percentages, pie chart and bar chart. The findings of the study indicated the software packages adopted in Nigerian university libraries. The findings also indicated that KOHA is the most widely adopted software package and the most widely used presently; and that the level of automation of university libraries in Nigeria is very low.
