The interview took place at Wilson's home in Valatie, New York, and was conducted by Jonathan Katz for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. This transcript has been lightly edited for readability by the Archives of American Art. The reader should bear in mind that they are reading a transcript of spoken, rather than written, prose. Interview ANN WILSON: [In progress] "—happened as if it didn't come out of himself and his fixation but merged. It came to itself and is for this moment without him or her, not brought about by him or her but is itself and in this sudden seeing of itself, we make the final choice. What if it has come to be without external to us and what we read it to be then and heighten it toward that reading? If we were to leave it alone at this point of itself, our eyes aging would no longer be able to see it. External and forget the internal ordering that brought it about and without the final decision of what that ordering was about and our emphasis of it, other eyes would miss the chosen point and feel the lack of emphasis.

Moral Rights: The Anti-Rebellion Graffiti Heritage of 5Pointz Richard Chused* INTRODUCTION Graffiti has blossomed into far more than spray-painted tags and quickly vanishing pieces on abandoned buildings, trains, subway cars, and remote underpasses painted by rebellious urbanites. In some quarters, it has become high art. Works by acclaimed street artists Shepard Fairey, Jean-Michel Basquiat,2 and Banksy,3 among many others, are now highly prized. As part of the first wave of museums to celebrate moving image work, CMOA played a central role in legitimizing film as an art form, leading a movement that would eventually result in the integration of moving image artworks in museum collections worldwide. The department's active roster of programmingÐfeaturing historical screenings, director's retrospectives, and monthly appearances by experimental filmmakers from around the worldÐwas a leading factor in Pittsburgh's emergence in the 1970s as ªone of the most vibrant and exciting places in America for exploring cinema.º (Robert A. Haller, Crossroads: Avant-garde Film in Pittsburgh in the 1970s, 2005). The museum also served as a galvanizing force in the burgeoning field by increasing visibility and promoting the professionalization of moving image art through its publication of Film and Video Makers Travel Sheet (a monthly newsletter distributed to 2,000 subscribers worldwide) and the Film and Video Makers Directory (a listing of those involved in film and video production and exhibition) and by paying substantial honoraria to visiting filmmakers.

  • New Queer Cinema, a 25-Film Series Commemorating the 20Th Anniversary of the Watershed Year for New Queer Cinema, Oct 9 & 11—16
BAMcinématek presents Born in Flames: New Queer Cinema, a 25-film series commemorating the 20th anniversary of the watershed year for New Queer Cinema, Oct 9 & 11—16 The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Brooklyn, NY/Sep 14, 2012—From Tuesday, October 9 through Tuesday, October 16, BAMcinématek presents Born in Flames: New Queer Cinema, a series commemorating the 20th anniversary of the term ―New Queer Cinema‖ and coinciding with LGBT History Month. A loosely defined subset of the independent film zeitgeist of the early 1990s, New Queer Cinema saw a number of openly gay artists break out with films that vented anger over homophobic policies of the Reagan and Thatcher governments and the grim realities of the AIDS epidemic with aesthetically and politically radical images of gay life. This primer of new queer classics includes more than two dozen LGBT-themed features and short films, including important early works by directors Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant, and Gregg Araki, and experimental filmmakers Peggy Ahwesh, Luther Price, and Isaac Julien. New Queer Cinema was first named and defined 20 years ago in a brief but influential article in Sight & Sound by critic B. Ruby Rich, who noted a confluence of gay-oriented films among the most acclaimed entries in the Sundance, Toronto, and New Directors/New Films festivals of 1991 and 1992. Rich called it ―Homo Pomo,‖ a self-aware style defined by ―appropriation and pastiche, irony, as well as a reworking of history with social constructionism very much in mind . irreverent, energetic, alternately minimalist and excessive.‖ The most prominent of the films Rich catalogued were Tom Kalin’s Leopold and Loeb story Swoon (the subject of a 20th anniversary BAMcinématek tribute on September 13) and Haynes’ Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Poison (1991—Oct 12), an unpolished but complex triptych of unrelated, stylistically diverse, Jean Genet-inspired stories.

Borden, Lizzie (b.1958) by Tina Gianoulis Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Bisexual filmmaker Lizzie Borden gained fame in the mid-1980s among gay audiences and fans of independent movies for her visionary films about the unexplored politics of women's lives. A sharp observer of social realities, Borden brings a feminist perspective and a dynamic authenticity to her films that make them relevant long after their creation. Borden was born on February 3, 1958, the daughter of a Detroit stockbroker. Her given name was Linda, which she retained until she was eleven years old and heard the children's rhyme about the famed ax murderer. Perhaps foretelling her iconoclastic tendencies as an artist, young Linda changed her name to Lizzie Borden. She majored in art at Wellesley College before moving to New York City to become an artist and art critic. Attending a festival of Jean-Luc Godard films persuaded her to try her hand at filmmaking. She taught herself the skills she needed to make movies. Although she made a black and white film called Regrouping in 1976, Borden first received public attention with the release of Born in Flames in 1983. A feminist science fiction film, Born in Flames envisions a future ten years after a bloodless "Second American Revolution" has brought democratic socialism to the United States. Though smarmy politicians and media spokespeople assure the audience that equality has been universally achieved, the hypocrisy of the new society is soon revealed. Backed by the beat of an energetic punk soundtrack, the film's heroines, mostly lesbians of color, rise up and form a women's army to fight against the oppression they still face in the new society.

Water Ambient Through Water by Mark Daniel Cohen Georges Seurat: The Drawings Hyperion, Volume II, issue 4, December 2007 Georges Seurat: The Drawings The Museum of Modern Art, New York October 28, 2007 – January 7, 2008 by Mark Daniel Cohen 1 Hyperion—Water Ambient Through Water What we were water ambient through water. rawing is a reduction of visual art to its essentials, a drawing perhaps “Dof the principle of art itself down to the essentials. Its character is the character of art distilled, stripped down to its purest form, to its clearest rendition—to the thing itself. Cleansed to the merest of its means, it is the thing laid bare. To discover what typifies the aesthetic—what constitutes the distinguishing aspects of the artistic provocation, of the lyrical amplification, of the singing of existence—one may study what constitutes an adequacy in the practice of draftsmanship. What a drawing is, is what art does. For drawing is art done without the assembled technology, without the machinery for the transposition of gesture into something other than gesture— into color, or volume, or stage-set environment. It is the artist left strictly to the artist’s own devices, to personal wherewithal, reliant on the thinnest of mechanisms for the laying of the hand—capable, if capable at all, through a stick of burnt wood, or compressed graphite, or medium stained into tones. A drawing is the closest thing to the artist laying hand to the atmosphere—to figures cut in the air. A drawing is merely what the artist does—there is nothing more available to help.
