  • The Deacon As Wise Fool: a Pastoral Persona for the Diaconate
ATR/100.4 The Deacon as Wise Fool: A Pastoral Persona for the Diaconate Kevin J. McGrane* Deacons often sit with the hurt and marginalized. It is in keeping with our ordination vows as deacons in the Episcopal Church, which say, “God now calls you to a special ministry of servanthood. You are to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely.”1 Ever task focused, deacons look for the tangible and concrete things we can do to respond to the needs of the least of Jesus’ broth- ers and sisters (Matt. 25:40). But once the food is served, the money given, the medicine dispensed, then what? The material needs are supplied, but the hurt and the trauma are still very much present. What kind of pastoral care can deacons bring that will respond to the needs of the hurting and traumatized? I suggest that, if we as deacons are going to be sources of contin- ued pastoral care beyond being simple providers of material needs, we need to look to the pastoral model of the wise fool for guidance. With some exceptions here and there, deacons are uniquely fit to practice the pastoral persona of the wise fool. The wise fool is a clinical pastoral persona most identified and de- veloped by the pastoral theologians Alastair V. Campbell and Donald Capps. The fool is an archetype in human culture that both Campbell and Capps view as someone capable of rendering pastoral care. In his essay “The Wise Fool,”2 Campbell describes the fool as a “necessary figure” to counterpoint human arrogance, pomposity, and despo- tism: “His unruly behavior questions the limits of order; his ‘crazy’ outspoken talk probes the meaning of ‘common sense’; his uncon- ventional appearance exposes the pride and vanity of those around * Kevin J.

Climate change vulnerability and adaptation in the Intermountain Region. Gen. Tech. Rep. RMRS-GTR-375. Fort Collins, CO: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station. Part 1. pp. 1–197. Abstract The Intermountain Adaptation Partnership (IAP) identified climate change issues relevant to resource management on Federal lands in Nevada, Utah, southern Idaho, eastern California, and western Wyoming, and developed solutions intended to minimize negative effects of climate change and facilitate transition of diverse ecosystems to a warmer climate. U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service scientists, Federal resource managers, and stakeholders collaborated over a 2-year period to conduct a state-of-science climate change vulnerability assessment and develop adaptation options for Federal lands. The vulnerability assessment emphasized key resource areas— water, fisheries, vegetation and disturbance, wildlife, recreation, infrastructure, cultural heritage, and ecosystem services—regarded as the most important for ecosystems and human communities. The earliest and most profound effects of climate change are expected for water resources, the result of declining snowpacks causing higher peak winter

At the beginning our naiviety led us to believe that reports miraculously land in the ‘in’ file, photos are taken by themselves and the final magazine arrives in all its splendour out of thin air. After two weeks, this illusory belief was shattered, thanks to Mrs. Shepherd’s constant reminders and imposed deadlines, the Collegian Committee set about performing its actual task. People owning reports were hounded and harassed (by the secret Collegian Force) photography sessions were ruled with an iron fist and the school body was subjected to the revolutionary 'A-:-- torture, technique of Collegian Committee advertising (thanks Mrs. Pyett for the loan of your sunnies). Through these trials and tribulations the Collegian Committee has brought about several changes as you will no doubt notice. We hope that these alterations improve the overall effect of the 1991 Collegian. Finally as the year draws to an end, I would like to thank Mrs. Shepherd plus Mr. Thompson for their invaluable help and the entire Collegian Committee for their tireless work. I am sure that they’d all agree that working on the Collegian was a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Department of (jOO^fr^fr ^SfObL^y The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date Apm- ^ 1*T^ DE-6 (2/88) -ii- ABSTRACT Though he is well known, the Class Clown is not particularly well understood. With the exception of one quantitative study by Damingo and Purkey (1978), no significant research has been written on this witty character. The educational community has viewed the Class Clown by and large as an under-achieving student who, in his efforts to get attention, is a disruptive force in the classroom. As such, his behaviour, though often enormously funny, is a threat to the conformity and stability that good classroom discipline demands.

  • Op Zoek Naar De Canon. Criteria Ter Selectie Van Een Moderne Schrijversbiografie in Vlaanderen: Enkele Praktische En Theoretische Reflecties
Op zoek naar de canon. Criteria ter selectie van een moderne schrijversbiografie in Vlaanderen: enkele praktische en theoretische reflecties door Stefan VAN DEN BOSSCHE Abstract In Flanders chere has been si nee approximacely 1990 a cercain rise of li terary biographies. Ic has generally been accepced chat the ideal biography is a quescion of finding the right dialogue becween licerature and science, and chat the value of the biography is decermined, in good as well as in bad ways, by the talent of the biographer. Recent research on the licerary canon was especially focused on the personal publications, the group-participation, pos sible side-activicies in licerary regions and the positive recepcion of the work of the subject. Nevercheless a large number of less-important wricers has influenced the percepcion of the literal history. The contemporary licerary canon is only of secondary importance to decerminate the choice of the bio grapher. Especially admiracion, identificacion and the will of rehabilicacion stimulace him to write down a certain live-story.

Almost immediately the Kennedys were shaped by the nature of the entrants - attracting journalists from the likes of Four Corners, 60 Minutes, The Australian, A Current Affair, 730 Report, SBS and the Financial Review to become a truly independent, national celebration of Australian journalism. The awards were created by journalists for journalists - open to all-comers with no agendas or historical obligation to affiliation. A decade later the Kennedys have become the Australian media's night of nights - celebrated for their inclusiveness, independence, respect for the past and the value of fostering the next generation of the nation's finest journalists. Les Kennedy THE INSPIRATION OF THE KENNEDY AWARDS Les Kennedy was never in the officers' mess of journalism - and nor did he want to be. He loved nothing better than excelling on the road as a leader of other "shoe leather" journalists. Proud of his indigenous heritage, Les' awareness of his past and the pride he took in it were the twin chambers of a big, generous heart. It was his fabled generosity that fuelled a selfless devotion to a long list of protégés.

PB 1 WWW.PHAEDRACD.COM · 1992 - 2012 Phaedra’s Whys and Wherefores !is catalog simultaneously lists and celebrates the achievements of Phaedra in the twenty years of its existence. At "rst blush publishing just over one hundred CDs in twenty years time may not look impressive. But it is very impressive, as you will see once you know the whys and wherefores of Phaedra. It is the purpose of this introduction to tell you about them. In spite of the .com extension in the URL of its website (www.phaedracd.com), Phaedra is not a commercial undertaking. It is part of a non-pro"t organization, Klassieke Concerten vzw. It was started by one man, and it still is almost entirely the work of one man. He has no sta#, not even a part-time secretary. His o$ce is a room in his house; his storage space, another room. He does everything himself. He decides which music Phaedra will publish, often searching out totally unknown works, including quite a few that are available only as manuscripts. He chooses the performers, in consultation with the composers if these are still alive. He takes care of the logistics of the recording sessions, and of the production process, of the covers and booklets as well as of the CDs proper. He is in charge of all publicity and of marketing Phaedra. It is impossible to justly evaluate the achievements of Phaedra without knowing it is a one-man operation. Like most Flemish non-pro"t organizations, it is also a shoestring operation.
