All these holy sites have some mythological significance attached to them. When people go to a temple, they say they go for Darsan – of the image of the presiding deity. The pinnacle act of Hindu worship is to stand in the presence of the deity and to look upon the image so as to see and be seen by the deity and to gain the blessings. There are thousands of Siva sthalams- pilgrimage sites - renowned for their divine images. And it is for the Darsan of these divine images as well the pilgrimage places themselves - which are believed to be the natural places where Gods have dwelled - the pilgrimage is made. -

Authored by Sekkizhar, it is also known as the Tiru Thondar Puranam. This Tirumurai is based on the Tiru Thondat Thogai of Sundaramurti Nayanar and Tiru Thondar Tiruvandhati of Nambiandar Nambi. It is to be noted that another work of the 13 century, Tiru Thondar Purana Saram of Saint Umapathi Sivacharya is also based on the Tiru Thondar Tiruvandhati of Nambiandar Nambi. Nambiandar Nambi is said to have discovered and compiled the Tirumurai. The life history of Nambi has been dealt in the eleventh Tirumurai. Periya Puranam, the hagiology of 63 Saivite Saints is a precious work by Sekkizhar. The Periya Puranam is the most important of all the works relating to the lives of the 63 Nayanars. The twelfth Tirumurai contains more than 18,000 stanzas, and is the outpourings of sixty-three Nayanmars, who sang in praise of Lord Siva. Saint Sekkizhar Nayanar Sekkizhar was born at Kunrathur in the Thondai Chola Nadu. This region was part of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and was ruled by the Pallava Kings. It corresponds to the present environs of Chennai with Chengalput district and its surrounding area in Kanchipuram district. At that time, Thondai Nadu was famous for its intellectuals. Sekkizhar was born as Arulmozhi Thevar and his younger brother was Palaravayar. -

Shankar 2004 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the theme of dance imagery in south Indian temples by focusing on one aspect of dance expression, namely, the 108-karana sculptures. The immense popularity of dance to the south Indian temple is attested by the profusion of dance sculptures, erection of dance pavilions (nrtta mandapas), and employment of dancers (devaradiyar). However, dance sculptures are considered merely decorative addtitions to a temple. This work investigates and interprets the function and meaning of dance imagery to the Tamil temple. Five temples display prominently the collective 108-karana program from the eleventh to around the 17th century. The Rajaraja Temple at Thanjavur (985- 1015 C.E.) displays the 108-karana reliefs in the central shrine. From their central location in the Rajaraja Temple, the 108 karana move to the external precincts, namely the outermost gopura. In the Sarangapani Temple (12-13th century) at Kumbakonam, the 108 karana are located in the external façade of the outer east gopura. The subsequent instances of the 108 karana, the Nataraja Temple at Cidambaram (12th-16th C.E.), the Arunachalesvara Temple at Tiruvannamalai (16th C.E.), and the Vriddhagirisvara Temple at Vriddhachalam (16th-17th C.E.), ii also use this relocation. -

Lesson 39, Who Are the Four Great Tamil Saints?
Lesson 6 The Nalvars are the four Siva saints The Nalvars are the four Siva saints who lived in Tamil Nadu around 1,200 years ago. Each composed devotional songs that are sung today in satsangs and temples. Who are these Saints? Their names are Appar, Sundarar, Sambandar and Manikkavasagar. All are deeply revered by Tamil Saivites. Saint Tirunavukkarasar, known as Appar Saint Tirunavukkarasar, known as Appar (“father”), traveled from temple to temple worshiping Siva. He chose the humblest of work, sweeping the temple walks and weeding the stone courtyards. Saint Sundarar Saint Sundarar is known for his deep visions of Lord Siva and for several miraculous events that occurred in his life. A poor man, he often prayed for money or food for his family. His prayers were always answered. Saint Sambandar The third saint, Sambandar, was just three years old when he was blessed with a vision of Lord Siva, after which he spontaneously sang his first song. He traveled throughout South India, sometimes with Appar, his elder, singing the praises of Siva. At age 16, his family arranged him to be married. But this was not to be. He was so devoted to Siva that just before the wedding, he disappeared into the sanctum of Tirunallurperuman Siva Temple near Chidambaram and was never seen again. Devarums The songs of the first three saints are called Devarams. Manikkavasagar Manikkavasagar, the fourth Nalvar, was prime minister to the Pandyan king of Madurai. One day he was blessed with enlightenment in a vision of Lord Siva sitting under a banyan tree. -

Class Notes Class: XII Topic: BHAKTI-SUFI TRADITIONS: CHANGES IN RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DEVOTIONAL TEXT (C. EIGHT Subject: HISTORY TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. Alvars and Nayanars and their Relations with the state(Rulers): Cholas, Pallavas and Pandyas ruled south India. Buddhism and Jainism had been prevalent in this region for several centuries. Alvars and Nayanars opposed Buddhism and Jainism through their hymns. This hostility was due to competition between religious traditions for royal patronage. Chola rulers supported Brahmanical and bhakti traditions, making land grants and constructing of temples for Vishnu and Shiva. In fact, some of the most magnificent Shiva temples, including those at Chidambaram, Thanjavur were constructed under the patronage of Chola rulers and representations Shiva in bronze sculpture were produced. Rulers tried to win the support of Alvars and Nayanars. The Chola kings often attempted to claim the divine support and proclaim their own power and status by building splendid temples that were adorned with stone and metal sculpture to recreate the visions of these popular saints who sang in language of the people. These kings also introduced the singing of Tamil Shaiva hymns in the temples under royal patronage, taking the initiative to collect and organise them into a text (Tevaram). Chola ruler Parantaka I had consecrated metal images of Bhakti Saints -Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar in a Shiva temple. These were carried in processions during the festivals of these saints. – 1 – PRELIMINARY THOUGHTS ON SOME ASIAN HARPS AND LUTES IN IMAGES AND LITERATURE Michael Nixon Paper presented at the ‘Re-Centring AfroAsia: Musical and Human Migrations in the Pre-Colonial Period 700–1500 AD’ Conference, University of Cape Town and University of the Western Cape, 18–21 September 2016 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ In seeking to come to terms with the methodological implications of researching the musics and musicians that travelled between Africa and Asia in a period roughly 1 300 to 1 500 years ago, I set about searching through libraries and archives to collect materials; these were partly to think with and partly to help constitute a resource for my colleagues. Growing increasingly appalled at my ignorance of the musics of this time, I set about learning something of Iran’s (Persia’s) music and social history, as I thought I could build on a working knowledge of South Asia in this period, when influences from West Asia began to make more intensive inroads into South Asia in the wake of long centuries of interaction between the two regions.1 This period is markedly different in that it was marked by invasions and conquests, and accompanied by a relatively newly-established religious ideology. The other impetus shaping this presentation is a decision to look to material culture, as this represents a resource produced within this period and which continues to exist and do work in present time. In a first essay in this area, I have looked at representations in iconography and literature of some string instruments from Iran and South Asia. -

These volumes contain the works of three of the most important Tamil poets 7. [1] [2] [3] The three poets not only participated in the rendition of their personal devotion to Shiva, but also engaged the community of believers through their songs, and their work is an important resource for understanding the emergence of the Bhakti movement in early medieval southern India. [4] During the reign of Rajaraji I of the Chola Dynasty, the anthems of these poets were collected and arranged by Nambiyandar Nambi. Saivism came of age, along with the expansion and consolidation of the imperial power of Chol of 9/11, [6] Thevaram contains 796 hymns made up of more than 8,200 verses, and the singing of these hymns continues today as a devoted practice in many Shiv temples in Tamil Nadu. -

The name Peria Puranam, which was a hallowed name has lost, in the modern Tamil, its real meaning and it may suggest to the ordinary reader that it is a myth. This epic is not merely a religious work but deals with social ethics. The saints, besides their religious life, lived up to the social stan - dard laid down in Tirukkural . The sacred Kural is being gradually accepted as a code of conduct, throughout the world. This epic, it is hoped, will attain the same status. We hope that the day will not be far off for the world to recognise its universal appeal. It was Sekkizhar, the minister of the country in the court of King Kulothunga Chola II (1133-1150), who undertook and completed successfully the task of collecting, compiling, collating and com - posing in 4253 verses the lives of the sixty-three Nayanmars, the poets of Shiva. -

When Chekkilar was praying to Lord Shiva for inspiration and blessing to start his work, Lord Shiva gave him the first word to start his book - "Ulagellam" (meaning - In all the world..). Feeling rejuvenated by this, Chekkilar completed his work describing so eloquently the lives of 63 Saiva Saints known as Nayanmars and 12 Shiva devotees.
