Plan to be there! History and Philosophy Events at GSA Denver 27­30 October 2013 125th Anniversary Annual Meeting & Expo

Sunday, 8 am–Noon: Great Books in Geology I Topical Session 145 will feature 15 papers on such topics as Saussure’s Voyage dans les Alpes, De La Beche’s Sections and Views, Lyell’s Principles of Geology and Antiquity of Man, Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, Suess’s Das Antliz der Erde, and others.

Sunday, 1 pm–5 pm: Great Books in Geology II and Parade of Past GSA Presidents Topical Session 145 (continued) will feature 16 papers, focusing on books such as Maclure’s US geology, McPhee’s Annals of a Former World, Gould’s Wonderful Life, and others. GSA Presidents will also be featured, including James Hall (first GSA president), (first African­American president), and Doris Curtis (first woman president, presented by student winner Carolina Gustafson). First place Student Winner Isabel Fay will be presenting on Sunday, 1pm – 5 pm in T47 Founders or Leaders in Hydrogeology

Sunday, 5pm–7 pm: and throughout the meeting: Our Division booth will open in the Exhibit Hall. Please plan to visit to check out displayed journals and network with your colleagues.

Monday, 8 am–Noon: In the Footsteps of Giants, Pardee session 125 will feature 15 papers, focusing upon Clarence King, , Grove Karl Gilbert, , J Harlen Bretz, James Hall, Florence Bascom, Edwin Dinwiddie McKee, Laurence Sloss, John Sepkoski, Norman L Bowen, Harry Hess, Konrad Krauskopf, and Eugene Shoemaker. An intermission break will include a reception and informal discussion.

Monday, 1 pm–5 pm: Dinosaurs and Diamonds: Celebrating 125 Years of Geoscience in museums Topical Session 178 will include Communicating Science and the Myth of Dumbing Down, Fossil Horses: Icons of Evolution Exhibits, the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and University of California Museum of Paleontology’s use of online media. Student winner Ian Renfrew will present on Gilbert Raasch.

Tuesday, Noon–2 pm: Division lunch, awards, and business meeting. Professor Leonard Gilchrist Wilson will receive the Rabbitt Award, and Professor Hugh Rance will receive the Friedman Award. Isabel Fay will receive the first place Student Award, with second place winners Carolina Gustafson and Ian James Renfrew. (Please purchase your ticket when you register or at GSA sales desk.)

Tuesday, 1–5 pm: Philosophical Issues, Historical Conflicts, and Contributing Geologists, our division discipline papers, convened with Petroleum Geology. Some topics include the Great Diamond Hoax of 1872, the mechanical clock and quantification of time, and a case study of bone mineral.

Tuesday, 5:30–7:30 pm: Division reception (beer and wine, refreshments, and prizes). Please consider bringing a book or other item to the Division booth or to the reception as a donation for the prize drawing.

Wednesday, 1–5 pm: Colorado Scientific Society Topical Session 148 includes the history of Colorado’s thermal springs from Native Americans to the present, history and development of concepts of metamorphism of the Precambrian of the Colorado Front Range, and the role of Colorado in modern 4D thrust tectonics.
