Burns Department of Geology, Portland State University Portland, Oregon 97207, USA ABSTRACT Landslides and fl oods of lava and water tremendously affected the Columbia River during its long history of transecting the Cascade Volcanic Arc. This fi eld trip touches on aspects of the resulting geology of the scenic Columbia River Gorge, including the river-blocking Bonneville landslide of ~550 years ago and the great late- Pleistocene Missoula fl oods. Not only did these events create great landscapes, but they inspired great geologists. Mid-nineteenth century observations of the Colum- bia River and Pacifi c Northwest by James Dwight Dana and John Strong Newberry helped germinate the “school of fl uvial” erosion later expanded upon by the south- western United States topographic and geologic surveys. Later work on features related to the Missoula fl oods framed the career of J Harlen Bretz in one of the great geologic controversies of the twentieth century. Butowsky Historian, History Division National Park Service, Washington, DC The Geology National Historic Landmark Theme Study represents the second phase of the National Park Service's thematic study of the history of American science. Phase one of this study, Astronomy and Astrophysics: A National Historic Landmark Theme Study was completed in l989. Subsequent phases of the science theme study will include the disciplines of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and other related sciences. The Science Theme Study is being completed by the National Historic Landmarks Survey of the National Park Service in compliance with the requirements of the Historic Sites Act of l935. The Historic Sites Act established "a national policy to preserve for public use historic sites, buildings and objects of national significance for the inspiration and benefit of the American people." Under the terms of the Act, the service is required to survey, study, protect, preserve, maintain, or operate nationally significant historic buildings, sites & objects. The National Historic Landmarks Survey of the National Park Service is charged with the responsibility of identifying America's nationally significant historic property. The survey meets this obligation through a comprehensive process involving thematic study of the facets of American History. In recent years, the survey has completed National Historic Landmark theme studies on topics as diverse as the American space program, World War II in the Pacific, the US Constitution, recreation in the United States and architecture in the National Parks.

River ecologists are also river-basin planners. However, their role in planning has developed slowly over the decades since the beginning of the 20th century. Three major factors explain this phenomenon. First, ecologists focused on plant and animal communities rather than on broader policy issues related to land settlement and water development. Second, the federal government, and most state and local governments as well, used mainly economic criteria to justify projects. Intangible benefits, including the value of species or an aesthetically pleasing landscape, drew relatively little attention. Third, the public generally favored development, especially during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Only after World War II did the public's position shift in favor of more preservation, as ecologists developed the concept of the ecosystem, large dam projects forced basin inhabitants from their homes, and chemical and nuclear pollutants threatened the environment. Also, urbanization increased support for the preservation of recreation sites and of streams undisturbed by human intervention. Meanwhile, partly through important advances in geomorphology and hydrology, ecologists acquired new tools to understand the land-water relationship within river basins. Neverthless, benefit-cost analysis continued to dominate federal water- resources planning, and organizational culture and competing or overlapping bureaucracies hampered rational water resources administration.

    Overview of Wheat Movement on the Columbia River Report Prepared August 17, 2016 All data based on five year averages (2011-2015) The Columbia-Snake River grain handling system includes: o 7 grain export terminals. o 26 up-country grain barge loading terminals along 360 miles of navigable river. o Eight dams that lift a barges a combined 735 feet. o 80 barges controlled by two companies (Shaver and Tidewater). The seven export terminals on the Columbia River annually export 26.5 MMT of grain, including 11.7 MMT of wheat. This makes the Columbia River the third largest grain export corridor in the world behind the Mississippi River and the Parana River in South America. Grain exports from the Columbia River continue to grow each year. Every year approximately 4.0 MMT of wheat, largely Soft White, is shipped down the Columbia River via barge from the states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. This is equivalent to: o 34% of all wheat exports from the Columbia River. o 15% of all grain exports from the Columbia River. o 15% of all wheat exported from the United States. o 70% of all wheat exported from the Pacific Northwest. o 50% of all wheat produced in the Pacific Northwest. The wheat moved by barge is largely sourced from the upper river system. o 18% from between Bonneville Dam and McNary Dam. o 36% from between McNary Dam and Lower Monumental Dam. o 46% from between Lower Monumental Dam and Lewiston, Idaho. o 54% of the wheat moved by barge moves through one or more of the four Lower Snake River dams.
