These isolates had cultural characteristics on YMA quite similar to Azorhizobium caulinodans (alkalinization, scant extracellular polysaccharide production, fast or intermediate growth rate). They exhibited a high similarity of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics among themselves and to a lesser extent with A. caulinodans. DNA:DNA hybridization and 16SrRNA sequences support their inclusion in the genus Azorhizobium, but not in the species A. caulinodans. The name A. doebereinerae is proposed, with isolate UFLA1-100 ( ¼ BR5401, ¼ LMG9993 ¼ SEMIA 6401) as the type strain. -

It is cultivated in south or west India in the ganga valley and in Bengal. The plant contains rich in tanins, flavonoides, coumarins, steroids and triterpens. The plant used in colic disorder, jaundice, poisoning condition, small-pox, eruptive fever, epilepsy etc. The present work is carried out on phytopharmacological survey of the plant. W. Wight and Trifolium repens L. (Fabales Fabaceae) in natural flora of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Based on extensive field surveys and literature review, it was apparent that these species have not been recorded before in the UAE flora.It might be important to mention that the two new records have great economic and agricultural importance. Both species are spontaneously occurring in the natural habitat and considered as good forage and can adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. Specimens of both newly recoded species are deposited in the Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium (SSBH), UAE. Descriptions and photo - graphs of these species are provided. The new records of vascular plants in UAE flora would help ecologists and conservation biologists in more potential scientific research and natural resources exploitations. Interest in green manures has also been revived because of the continuously increasing concern for maintaining long-term soil productivity and ecological sustainability. This interest has led to the identification of lesser known legume plants that have green manuring potential, e.g. Sesbania cannabina. Sesbania has vigorous growth and is adapted to various adverse climatic conditions. Sesbania species fix nitrogen, and produce large no of root nodules for this purpose. Thus, it provides low-cost nitrogen inputs incrop production system. Sesbania cannabina is a multipurpose annual plant which can serve as a green manure, green leaf manure, a biofertilizer and is a good companion crop for wetland rice cultivation. It grows well under water logged or unirrigated conditions, tolerant to high temperatures (36-44°C), high soil alkalinity (pH 10) and establishes during rainy season in a wide variety of soils such as loamy, clayey, black and sandy soils. Sesbania species can play an important role in long-term maintenance of soil fertility and productivity. -

The following conclusions were drawn: (i)the differentiation of two genomic species within Azorhizobium strains and a group of non-identified strains (probably ßhizo- bium) was strongly supported by enzyme electrophoresis ;(i¡) esterases were more elec- trophoretically polymorphic than metabolic enzymes, since 35 and 11 electrophoretic types, respectively, were detected within the 57 strains studied ; (iii)strains isolated from stem or root nodules were genetically very similar and could not be differentiated; (iv) six Azorhizobium strains isolated from plants growing in saline soils could not be grouped separately from the other strains, which might be attributed to the adaptation of azorhizobia to epiphytic conditions; and (VIa comparative study of esterase patterns of azorhizobia showed that strains isolated in the Philippines probably originated in north- ern Senegal, but did not reveal a clear separation between strains originating from north- ern and central Senegal. -

S. Hitchcock and Paul C. Standley published their succinct manual in 1919 for the identification of the vascular flora in the Washington, DC, area. A comparable new manual has long been needed. As with their work, such a manual should be produced through a collaborative effort of the region’s botanists and other experts. The Annotated Checklist is offered as a first step, in the hope that it will spark and facilitate that effort. In preparing this checklist, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. We have chosen to distribute the first part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and revised while it is current and the second part (Monocotyledons) is still in progress. Additions, corrections, and comments are welcome. We hope that our checklist will stimulate a new wave of fieldwork to check on the current status of the local flora relative to what is reported here. When Part II is finished, the two parts will be combined into a single publication. We also maintain a Web site for the Flora of the Washington-Baltimore Area, and the database can be searched there (http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/dcflora).
