  • Competing Grand Prix Technologies of the Past
P.1 of 4 Competing Grand Prix technologies of the past In 2014, when the FIA Formula 1 engine of the 3rd Pressure-Charged (TurboCharged) Era will be so closely specified, even down to the diameter of the valve stems, that it seems likely that only company-specific detail drawing standards will produce any differences (“electrickery” apart), it is interesting to recollect some of the great technical duels of the past century of Grand Prix racing. In 1912 at the French Grand Prix, run under Formule Libre, 14.1 litre FIATs battled with 7.6 litre Peugeots having a more advanced specification and they just lost. The Peugeot introduced Double Overhead Camshafts and this became the valve operating mechanism of choice for nearly all subsequent racing engines and now is commonplace in ordinary production cars. Over 1934 – 1939 the front-engined IL8 and V12 Mercedes-Benz and the mid-engined V16 and V12 Auto Union cars, built firstly to the 750 kg empty and then the 3 litre Pressure-Charged (PC) / 4.5 litre Naturally Aspirated (NA) rules, fought tooth-and-nail for supremacy. This was a German internecine rivalry, perhaps sharpened by geography as Swabia (Stuttgart) versus Saxony (Chemnitz). Mercedes, with about twice the expenditure of Auto Union, beat them over the 48 races which they both contested by 27 wins to 17. Alfa Romeo wins (4) added a little spice occasionally. See Picture 1 on P.3. In 1949, in the temporary absence of Alfa Romeo, the rules which applied 1947 – 1951 allowed 1.5 litre PC cars (V12 Ferrari and IL4 Maserati) to compete with 4.5 litre NA (IL6 Lago-Talbot).

Miller* The foreign labor which made possible Western Europe's postwar economic growth' has become a permanent, if belatedly recognized, component of the region's labor markets. 2 Technological change and new industrial policies stress- ing efficiency, skilled labor, and rationalization threaten foreign workers, raising complex and important issues of law and social policy in the debate over labor's role in industrial policy. These changes already have resulted in grave problems which make agreement and clarification of the rights of foreign workers in national and international law a matter of considerable urgency.

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.

Lola at Le Mans 2007 Media Guide B08/60 LMP1 Coupe Preview Test Day Report Lola Team Profiles Complete Lola Le Mans Results A Message from Martin Birrane It goes without saying that Le Mans is the jewel in the crown of global sportscar competition. Indeed, having both raced and entered cars at La Sarthe, it is to my mind the biggest and best motor race in the world. This year, Lola is privileged to have six teams running Huntingdon-built chassis. It is extremely pleasing to see three each of our LMP1 and LMP2 cars here and with such a variety of engines, too. You will find elsewhere in this media guide Lola’s complete results at Le Mans – an invitation to conjure up your own memories from the wonderful past of this uniquely demanding race – and also a peek into the future with the first images of our new LMP1 coupe. I have long believed that Lola’s fortunes are a barometer of the health of sportscar racing and at the moment the market is looking strong, with this weekend’s six Lola entries and the imminent arrival of the first-ever customer LMP1 coupe, the Lola B08/60. As we look ahead to Lola’s 50th anniversary in 2008, the commitment to state-of-the-art technical facilities and outstanding engineering talent will remain the cornerstone of our success and appeal to both manufacturers and privateers seeking sportscar success. I would like to close by personally wishing our customers – and all of our friends throughout the sportscar racing community – the very best of luck in what promises to be an exceptional 75th running of the classic 24 Hours of Le Mans.

80 years ago – Bugatti wins 24 Hours of Le Mans MOLSHEIM 18 06 2019 IN 1939, A BUGATTI TYPE 57 C TECHNICALLY CLOSE TO THE PRODUCTION CAR SURPRISES IN LE MANS It´s one of the most famous and toughest endurance races in the world: the 24-Hours of Le Mans in France. It is the birthplace of legends. Exactly 80 years ago, on the 18th of June 1939 two Frenchman were victorious with their French race car: Jean-Pierre Wimille and Pierre Veyron in a Bugatti Type 57 C Tank. Incidentally, Bugatti would remain the reigning champion for the next ten years. 50 drivers entered the race in eight different categories, but only 42 would actually start the race. 80 years ago, the 24-Hours of Le Mans were already an outright manufacturer’s battle, although the race did not belong to any racing series back then. The competition was tremendous: 25 vehicles alone came from France, with famous brands like Delahaye, Delage and Talbot. On the starting grid were Adlerwerk and BMW from Germany, Great Britain was represented Aston Martin, Morgan, Riley, MG and Singer and from Italy Alfa Romeo. Bugatti went to the race with great enthusiasm. The previous year, the French car maker had had to renounce their start in the prestigious race due to technical problems. This year, however, with the 16thedition of the Type 57, everything was working. Under the streamlined body of the Type 57 race version there was a nearly series production chassis of the Type 57 C, developed by Jean Bugatti, the brilliant engineer and son of l Bugatti founder Ettore.
