    Morgan launches limited-run Aero GT to celebrate the finale of the Aero Range 6th March 2018 Key facts - Morgan Motor Company has launched a new “gloves off” variant of the Aero 8; the race-inspired Aero GT - Just eight examples of the Aero GT will be produced, marking the end of Aero 8 production at Morgan’s Pickersleigh Road factory - Each Aero GT exhibits an unconventionally aggressive appearance thanks to all new hand-worked body panels, these include wing top louvres and an aerodynamic enhancing rear diffuser – all of which have been tested extensively to reduce drag and significantly increase downforce - Each of the eight vehicles have already been allocated through Morgan’s established Dealership network - The Aero GT was launched at the Geneva Motor Show on 6th March 2018 - All bespoke Aero GT vehicles will be built by the Morgan Special Projects division and individually tailored to reflect the customer’s personal specification - The Aero GT features the Morgan N62 V8 engine.     P.1 of 4 Competing Grand Prix technologies of the past In 2014, when the FIA Formula 1 engine of the 3rd Pressure-Charged (TurboCharged) Era will be so closely specified, even down to the diameter of the valve stems, that it seems likely that only company-specific detail drawing standards will produce any differences (“electrickery” apart), it is interesting to recollect some of the great technical duels of the past century of Grand Prix racing. In 1912 at the French Grand Prix, run under Formule Libre, 14.1 litre FIATs battled with 7.6 litre Peugeots having a more advanced specification and they just lost. The Peugeot introduced Double Overhead Camshafts and this became the valve operating mechanism of choice for nearly all subsequent racing engines and now is commonplace in ordinary production cars. Over 1934 – 1939 the front-engined IL8 and V12 Mercedes-Benz and the mid-engined V16 and V12 Auto Union cars, built firstly to the 750 kg empty and then the 3 litre Pressure-Charged (PC) / 4.5 litre Naturally Aspirated (NA) rules, fought tooth-and-nail for supremacy. This was a German internecine rivalry, perhaps sharpened by geography as Swabia (Stuttgart) versus Saxony (Chemnitz). Mercedes, with about twice the expenditure of Auto Union, beat them over the 48 races which they both contested by 27 wins to 17. Alfa Romeo wins (4) added a little spice occasionally. See Picture 1 on P.3. In 1949, in the temporary absence of Alfa Romeo, the rules which applied 1947 – 1951 allowed 1.5 litre PC cars (V12 Ferrari and IL4 Maserati) to compete with 4.5 litre NA (IL6 Lago-Talbot).

The politico’s are under a lot of pressure as the South basically shuts down with snow. It is wet and T windy here in Florida and the dampness has even clogged up my sand blast cabinet. Best to stay inside where it’s warm and read those new Morgan books I got as holiday presents. Or, better yet to collect up some good stuff for another MOGSouth newsletter, so that you too could have a good Morgan read. And, I know I’m not alone in wanting to stay inside. I got a note from Peter Ballard claiming that his garage was too ‘cold’, so he took to writing down a bit of his experience on his 4/4 restoration project. Good stuff and included here. Sometimes there is an obvious theme to these newsletters, and sometimes, not. This is one of those ‘not’ times. That being the case, this newsletter is a eclectic collection of this and that. Certainly all Morgan, but nothing more binding than that. There’s a little something for everybody. Some technical, some historical and even some whimsical. And I think we have pretty much covered the model range, old to new, with three wheels or four. Enjoy !
