Armstrongism and the Worldwide Church Of
Armstrongism and the Worldwide Church of God I. WHERE THIS CULT ORIGINATED A. This cult can be traced back to a man by the name of Herbert W. Armstrong and his supposed divine appointments. 1. Herbert Armstrong started out his career asa promotional and advertising man in Des Moines, Iowa in 1912. But in 1920 his advertising business failed in what he described as a flash depression 2. In 1924 Armstrong moved to Oregon and on two more separate occasions his business enterprises `failed because of what he described as "forces beyond his control". 3. Sometime between 1924 and 1931 Armstrong was supposedly converted and began to write and do evangelistic work. 4. It is interesting to note that Armstrong's conversion came about through his wife's discovery and it was a conversion to what she had found. She believed that obedience to God's spiritual laws which were summed upin the ten commandments was necessary for salvation. 5. Armstrong at first set out to prove that his wife was wrong but later he concluded that she had indeed found the truth which meant to him that most of Christendom was not proclaiming the truth. 6. Armstrong was ordained in Eugene, Oregon in 1931 and began to conductevangelistic campaigns there. 7. In January 1934 Armstrong began a radio program in Eugene~ Oregon entitled "The World Tomorrow" and with his incredible speaking and promotional abilities he launched his cultist career filled with all kinds of false and heretical teachings. 8. At exactly 10A.M. on January 1934 Armstrong declared this to be the starting point of the fulfillment of 90% of all Bible prophecies. -

Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

Many scholars from many different perspectives have attempted to answer this question. I identify the emergence of these forms of self-government with early modern nationalism. Broadly speaking, nationalism of the right sort provides indispensable resources both for united popular resistance against autocratic rule, and for the formation and legitimation of national systems self- governance. Resistance and self-government both require a national consciousness that includes a myth of national origin, a national language, a common faith, and, crucially, native traditions of self-government, and stories of heroic ancestors who successfully defended those traditions against usurpers and tyrants. It is through national consciousness that abstract theories of resistance and self-government become concrete and tenable. It is though national fellowship that the idea of a political nation, possessing the right to make rulers accountable to its will, comes into existence and is sustained over time. My arguments basically fall under two headings, historical and theoretical. By an examination of the nationalist political thought of early modern European countries, I intend to establish important historical connections between the rise of nationalism and the emergence of self-government. -

Unfolding Verse: Poetry As Correspondence In Early Modern England Abstract This project recovers a forgotten history of Renaissance poetry as mail. At a time when trends in English print publication and manuscript dissemination were making lyric verse more accessible to a reading public than ever before, writers and correspondents created poetic objects designed to reach individual postal recipients. Drawing on extensive archival research, “Unfolding Verse” examines versions of popular poems by John Donne, Ben Jonson, Mary Wroth, and others which look little like “literature.” Rather, these verses bear salutations, addresses, folds, wax seals, and other signs of transmission through the informal postal networks of early modern England. Prayer Pilgrimage
Prayer Pilgrimage This month the Benefice of Dorchester with the Winterbournes looks forward to the arrival of new Team Rector of Dorchester, Revd Canon Thomas Woodhouse. He and his family will be formally welcomed at the service of Institution, Induction and Installation on Wednesday 26th February, 7pm in St Mary’s Church, Edward Road (where Thomas will be based). However, prior to that, he will be travelling the patch by way of a Prayer Pilgrimage to which all are invited in their particular context, or if more convenient to one of the other churches in the team. How English Baptists Changed the Early Modern Toleration Debate
RADICALLY [IN]TOLERANT: HOW ENGLISH BAPTISTS CHANGED THE EARLY MODERN TOLERATION DEBATE Caleb Morell Dr. Amy Leonard Dr. Jo Ann Moran Cruz This research was undertaken under the auspices of Georgetown University and was submitted in partial fulfillment for Honors in History at Georgetown University. MAY 2016 I give permission to Lauinger Library to make this thesis available to the public. ABSTRACT The argument of this thesis is that the contrasting visions of church, state, and religious toleration among the Presbyterians, Independents, and Baptists in seventeenth-century England, can best be explained only in terms of their differences over Covenant Theology. That is, their disagreements on the ecclesiological and political levels were rooted in more fundamental disagreements over the nature of and relationship between the biblical covenants. The Baptists developed a Covenant Theology that diverged from the dominant Reformed model of the time in order to justify their practice of believer’s baptism. This precluded the possibility of a national church by making baptism, upon profession of faith, the chief pre- requisite for inclusion in the covenant community of the church. Church membership would be conferred not upon birth but re-birth, thereby severing the links between infant baptism, church membership, and the nation. Furthermore, Baptist Covenant Theology undermined the dominating arguments for state-sponsored religious persecution, which relied upon Old Testament precedents and the laws given to kings of Israel. These practices, the Baptists argued, solely applied to Israel in the Old Testament in a unique way that was not applicable to any other nation. Rather in the New Testament age, Christ has willed for his kingdom to go forth not by the power of the sword but through the preaching of the Word. -

INTRODUCTION In recent years t he r e has been a gr owi ng interest within the Chinese Christian community in the a reas of "Chi nese native-colored theology," the relationship between Christianity and Chinese cul t ure, the appropriateness of Chinese foreign missions projects, and the "indigenous church." These topics usually arouse peculiar interest among most Chinese Christians. Their central appeal is to the concept of the dis tinctly indigenous "Chinese" approach.
