Switzerland will have positive – if distant – memories of their last encounter with Estonia as the sides meet in UEFA EURO 2016 Group E. Previous meetings • In their only previous senior encounters, 's Switzerland beat Uno Piir's Estonia 6-0 away and 4-0 at home in 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying. • That 6-0 defeat was Estonia's first competitive game since regaining independence. • The teams for their only previous encounter in Switzerland, in Berne on 17 November 1993, were: Switzerland: Pascolo, Herr, Geiger, Hottiger, Quentin (Türkyilmaz 75), Ohrel (Rueda 46), Bregy, Sutter, Bickel, Knup, Chapuisat. Estonia: Poom, Prins, Kallaste, Kaljend, Borissov, Klavan (Puštov 80), Olumets, Reim, Bragin, Hepner, Rajala (Linnumäe 47). • Victory in this game secured Switzerland's place in the World Cup finals. Form guide • Switzerland have won their last two Group E fixtures without conceding since opening their campaign with losses to England and Slovenia. • Estonia have not scored in three Group E matches since kicking off with a 1-0 home victory against Slovenia. They were held 0-0 by San Marino in their final qualifier of 2014 – the first time their opponents had avoided defeat in 60 UEFA European Championship qualifiers. • Estonia have gone five games (D1 L4) without a competitive away success since beating Andorra 1-0 in a 2014 World Cup qualifier on 16 October 2012. Trivia and links • The nations' ten meetings in UEFA age-group competitions have favoured Switzerland, whose record in those matches is W8 D1 L1 F38 A3. The lone Estonian success was a 1-0 away win for the Under-21s in August 2009. • In eight UEFA competition encounters between the nations' clubs, the Swiss side have largely come out on top, boasting the record W6 D1 L1 F19 A5.

Then led Malcantone Agno to promotion from the third divison in 2002/03 before becoming the first coach of AC Lugano – successors to FC Lugano. • Rejoined Bellinzona in October 2005, steering them to the 2007/08 final, where they lost 4-1 to FC Basel 1893, but consolation came two weeks later as victory in a relegation/promotion play-off against FC St Gallen gave Bellinzona a Super League berth. • Was appointed Young Boys coach in August 2008, guiding them to second-placed finishes in his first two campaigns in charge as well the 2008/09 Swiss Cup final. After short spells in charge of Turkey's Samsunspor and Sion back in Switzerland, was named Lazio coach in June 2012 and won the Coppa Italia in his first term in Italy, also helping the side to seventh position in the final standings. Left in January 2014 after being anointed Switzerland coach 's successor, taking the reins after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The club came two places higher the following campaign, yet Pehrsson departed the helm in October 2010. • Returned to Sweden to take charge of former team Djurgården in May 2011, helping them avoid relegation in his first season before steering them to a ninth-placed finish in the 2012 campaign. • Resigned as Djurgården boss in April 2013 and appointed Estonia's national team coach in December that year.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
