  • Venturing in the Slipstream
VENTURING IN THE SLIPSTREAM THE PLACES OF VAN MORRISON’S SONGWRITING Geoff Munns BA, MLitt, MEd (hons), PhD (University of New England) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Western Sydney University, October 2019. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. .............................................................. Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.

  • Georgie Fame
Georgie Fame Born on 26th June 1943 in the industrial town of Leigh, Lancashire, his interest in music grew from family entertainment “sessions” at home and musical evenings in the church hall across the street, where his father played in an amateur dance band. Although he took piano lessons for a short time at the age of seven, it wasn’t until the advent of rock’n’roll on radio during the mid-fifties that young Georgie began to take the family piano seriously. Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard were among his catalysts. Upon leaving school, shortly after his fifteenth birthday, he followed the family tradition and took a job as an apprentice cotton weaver in one of the many local mills. Leisure time, however, was spent playing piano in various pubs and with a local group, “The Dominoes”. In July 1959, at a summer holiday camp, Georgie was spotted by Rory Blackwell, the resident rock’n’roll bandleader, who offered the young singer/pianist a full time job. Goodbye, weaving shed. Rory and the Blackjacks departed for London, their hometown, when the summer season ended prematurely and Georgie went with them. The promised glamorous work did not materialise and the band broke up, but the determined young man from Leigh eventually took up a solo residency at The Essex Arms pub in London’s Dockland, where the kindly landlord provided a room to sleep in. In October of that year, the Marty Wilde Show was performing at the Lewisham Gaumont and Rory Blackwell arranged for Georgie to audition “live” for impressario Larry Parnes.

  • Rock the Blues Away
ROCK THESE BLUES AWAY. The Recordings of John Lee Hooker since 1981 ROCK THESE BLUES AWAY The Recordings Of John Lee Hooker Since 1981 By Gary Hearn (Feb. 2006) Introduction In 1992 Les Fancout’s sessionography of John Lee Hooker – “Boogie Chillen” – was published in booklet form by Blues & Rhythm magazine (ed. Tony Burke). This pamphlet is intended to update Les’ work with all the known Hooker sessions since 1981. Though details on other, earlier, sessions have come to light through recent releases, I have excluded them from the scope of my research and it is left to others to publish those corrections and additions elsewhere. The recordings listed here come from the final phase of John’s career during what is known as the Rosebud era, the name of his management company. To my imperfect mind, the best – and darkest – of them found release on the “Boom Boom” album put out by Pointblank in 1993. This was also a period when blues artists were called upon to provide benevolent cameos to artists better known in the mainstream. John took part in many such sessions with varying degrees of success; whatever the finished product, his contributions were immediately recognisable. The compact discs in this survey are, as far as I can tell, the first UK issue shown listed in order of catalogue number for ease of cross-reference to the sessionography. Because record companies re-issue, re-package and licence their recordings, subsequent issues are not considered. None of the cd-singles listed are still available and are shown merely in evidence of the penetration of the “John Lee Hooker” brand.
