Mary August 22, 2021—Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

A Prayer to Begin A School Year

Blessed are you, Lord God, Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways.

At the beginning of this new school year we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff of our parish school, John XXIII School, and all the schools that our parish children attend, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son .

Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need.

Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever. Amen. This Week at Saint Mary’s

Page 2 www.stmaryevanston.org The Season of Creation is the time of year hen the world’s 2.2 billion Christians are invited to pray and care for creation. This liturgical season runs annually from September 1 through October (the feast day of Saint Francis), uniting the global Christian family around one shared purpose.

September 1 was proclaimed as a day of prayer for creation for the Eastern Orthodox Church by Ecumenical Dimitrios in 1989, embraced by other major Christian European churches in 2001, and by for the Church in 2015.

Saint Mary’s Parishioners Gather for the World Day of of Prayer for Creation September 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Restoring Our Common Home: Prayer & Action in a Time of Ecological Crisis

Pope Francis said it May 24, 2015 — in his , Laudato Si (On Care for Our Common Home)

 St. Francis of Assissi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.  This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflected on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her.  The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life.  This is why the earth herself … is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she “groans in travail”.

The United Nations said it Monday, August 10 — in their Climate Change Report

 When they released a report] that issued a “code red for humanity,” warning that human-caused climate change is set to cause “unprecedented” extreme events if immediate global actions aren’t taken.

www.stmaryevanston.org Page 5 Reach Out To Those Who Are Seeking

Each year a number of people express their desire to become members of the . Or per- haps they are individuals already baptized and want to partake in receiving the Eucharist and complete their initiation through the sacrament of Confirmation.

 They are engaged or married to a catholic  their child is preparing for a sacrament  or they are just searching for the “right” church

These individuals are experiencing the call of God in their lives and all that is needed is a little en- couragement to take that next step.

They are your spouses, relatives, co-workers, neighbors and friends. They are listening for that word of en- couragement, and you may be that person to offer it. Look around and see if that person is someone close to you. Pray for them and invite them to join us!

If you or anyone is interested in The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) or need more information, please give Deacon Dennis Robak a call at 847.902.0031.

We pray … for those seeking a home in the Catholic Church through the process of Christian Initiation, that they may walk in God’s light as He continues to enter their lives in unexpected ways, with opportunity to grow in love and make progress in the kind of life we are all meant to live. Lord hear our prayer.
