2 2017 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT | MARY TIEGEN PARTNERS IN SERVICE: ABOVE AND BEYOND

As the new Board President, it gives me great pride to present the Helping Paws Impact Report for 2016-2017 and briefly highlight the ways our volunteers, donors, sponsors, and staff go Above and Beyond in service to our amazing graduates. During this fiscal year, we helped 14 individuals achieve greater independence and quality of life through their match with an assistance dog. In alignment with our policy to give priority to individuals applying for a successor dog, eight of nine dogs were successor dogs. One was placed as a skilled companion dog and four more were placed with veterans affected by post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our dedicated volunteers donated the equivalent of $3.6 million in time to Helping Paws this year. That includes 20 foster home trainers who are training their third (or more) dog! As someone who began her involvement with Helping Paws as a New Year’s resolution in 2008, trained three dogs, and served as a Caretaker Home for a litter of puppies, I can relate to how this great organization gets into your blood. That value also includes our 59 volunteer dog sitters, who along with our Foster Home Trainers donated nearly 27,000 hours of time dog sitting so that all the dogs had a place to “vacation” when needed. One of our major accomplishments this year was Helping Paws’ successful completion of the re- accreditation process of Assistance Dogs International (ADI). This onsite assessment certifies that we meet comprehensive standards for preparing, placing, and supporting assistance dogs and those who benefit from them. We have been accredited since 2007 and undergo an exhaustive review every five years to maintain this designation. I’m proud to report that Helping Paws was noted by ADI for a number of best practices. We’re also fortunate to receive generous financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations. We thank all these donors and sponsors for their support. Finally, I want to recognize the staff and board whose passion for our mission is extraordinary. We are grateful for all you do.

2017 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT 5 ARIC ELSNER & MINNIE

I recently retired from military service after 25 years, 9 months & 28 days. In April, I attended an event at Helping Paws where I met other veterans who had service dogs. I was really nervous about getting a service dog, and before attending, I thought to myself, “There are so many other people out there that are more deserving of a dog.” But I asked a ton of questions, listened to everyone’s stories and even got to work with a couple dogs that were in training. I was matched with my service dog Minnie in July 2016. She’s had so many positive effects on me and my entire family— together, we’ve gone to baseball games, restaurants, movie theatres and shopping. Minnie loves to swim, so her favorite place so far has been spending time at the lake at my sister’s cabin. She picks up dropped items, turns on lights, takes off my socks, and wakes me from nightmares. She watches me all the time, gives me kisses, gets me out to exercise and most of all, she keeps me grounded in the present where I look forward to living instead of hiding. ANYTHING It’s believable, now, that I’ll even return to school for retraining. IS POSSIBLE With Minnie at my side, anything is possible!

She’s had so many positive effects on me and my entire family— together, we’ve gone to baseball games, restaurants, movie theatres and shopping.

In 2002, Charice Snyder was diagnosed with agreed, and now describes her service dog, Briar, as Erythromelalgia, a rare disorder that causes a painful “a godsend.” The 3-year-old Golden Retriever brings burning sensation and swelling of the feet, legs, and a zest and energy to each day that truly brightens hands and—in severe cases—the face. However, after some contemplation, she know how much I could love an animal.”

8 2017 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT Jenna Kaliszewski is a Navy veteran whose military service was ended early by PTSD. AN INSTANT She inquired about a service dog to many organizations, but became discouraged by BOND the potentially long wait. Then Jenna was invited to attend an open house hosted by Helping Paws, and she quickly found the support and encouragement she needed to apply. At that open house, Jenna met and worked with Jaya, with whom she felt an instant connection. According to those who were there, Jaya came out of her kennel, walked right up to Jenna, and laid her head in her lap. From the outset, Jaya was focused on Jenna—and Jenna knew she would do whatever was needed to ensure that Jaya became her service dog and companion. PTSD had made sleep difficult for Jenna, but from the first night she brought Jaya home, she began to rest easier. And despite the fact that she sleeps with Jenna every night, Jaya still asks permission to jump up in bed, Jenna laughs. But Jaya helps Jenna during her waking moments, too. Family and friends have noted that Jenna talks less about her imperfections since having Jaya. Prior to receiving Jaya, Jenna had signed up for a Lone Survivor retreat, a program for veterans who are challenged by PTSD and other service-related injuries, but was contemplating canceling the trip due to anxiety. With Jaya by her side, Jenna felt empowered to go—and together they traveled to Utah where Jenna successfully completed the retreat.

2017 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT 11 TYLER OLSON & BROGAN

For Tyler Olson, the loss of his first service dog, Charlie, was devastating. “It hurt so much. I was depressed. I had lost my best friend, and I never wanted to feel that pain again,” Tyler says. Tyler and Charlie were matched when Tyler was just 17, about a year after he sustained a spinal cord injury during his junior year of high school. “We had six wonderful years together,” Tyler states, adding, “We were connected. We grew to trust each other and we both needed each other.” Tyler goes on to explain that of course the things that Charlie did for him were great; retrieving, opening doors, and turning on lights relieved his family and friends from having to help with those things. But it was what Charlie did to his heart that truly changed Tyler’s life. “I never knew the depth of love and connection that you could have with a dog,” Tyler reflects. After losing Charlie, Tyler couldn’t think about getting another dog. But ultimately he realized that the love and connection he had cherished with LOVE ALL Charlie could happen again. “You have to think of all the joy and benefit they bring ENCOMPASSING you. It outweighs the pain in the end.” Tyler applied for another service dog and was matched with Brogan after being without a dog for about nine months. “Brogan and I clicked right away and became very attached, very quickly,” Tyler says. While every dog is unique and Brogan’s personality is different from Charlie’s, Tyler’s love for Brogan is perhaps more encompassing. “After being without a dog for a while, I realize how good I had it with Charlie, which makes me appreciate Brogan even more,” says Tyler. “I work hard every day to make Brogan as happy as possible. Doing that makes me happy, too!” “I also want to say how much I appreciate Helping Paws and all the volunteers that make these dogs possible,” he adds. “Those of us with the dogs get all the attention, but it is the people behind Brogan and I clicked right away and the scenes that should be praised and recognized. The recipients just win the became very attached, very quickly. lottery. We really haven’t done anything to deserve these amazing animals.”

I thought about the idea of a successor time alone; dog, but I didn’t believe Maddy could be replaced. When I met Audi, it finally felt right. On the same day we were pre-matched, it is how Maddy began having seizures and we knew the end was near. It was as if she knew I would be taken care of, and it was okay for her to go. It was a hard I ground time emotionally, and I had a lot of reservations. I even considered not going through training with Audi. myself and Maddy’s passing, quite frankly, broke me. I lost my purpose for a while. Audi recharge. got me through that. In only two weeks, Audi was comfortable living with me and responding to requests without question. With Maddy, it took lots of time (and food!) to earn her trust and loyalty. I’ve learned that Golden Retrievers are much quicker to say: “What can I do? When? How much? I’m here!” I realized I’d adapted so much to Maddy’s decline that I had forgotten what a dog was able to do for me. I had become more reliant on people for help, which was exhausting for me. I cherish my time alone; it is how I ground myself and recharge. Audi has renewed me by giving me a break from needing others with me 24/7. Audi has given me INDEPENDENCE.
