Entry #1 – Coco

My name is coco. My mom, Judy Mazzie and I live in Shorewood. We love it here and we walk the Oak Leaf Trail everyday. I love it in all kinds of weather, I love the smells and the chance to meet other digs. Sometimes my mom gets upset when she sees that people don’t pick up after the and she says angry words. But she’s a good mom and always picks up after me. I also like to walk on Oakland, I get to see more people and we wave to the people in vanity fur and one day we stopped in the WorkRoom to talk to the owners and I even went into the liquor store one day. I can’t think of a better place to live. I have the wonderful trails, the park and the beer garden as well as all the excitement of Oakland.

Entry #2 – Gus

I am attaching a photo of my dog, Gus, who is already a neighborhood celebrity in Shorewood. Gus’ favorite time of day is when the kids are walking to/from school because he loves to greet them with friendly smiles and wags as they stop and talk to him. He also enjoys going to Draft and Vessel and accompanying me for coffee on the Colectivo patio in nice weather. Gus loves Shorewood, and Shorewood loves Gus! We’d love to help connect with this dog-friendly community.

Entry #3 – Molly and Opie

We are entering the dog contest; please find attached a photo of our dogs Molly (right) and Opie (left). They are both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Why we love them: their tails are always wagging! Everyone they encounter is immediately a friend, especially children. They are our everything and bring joy to us, and many others, every day. Molly and Opie love living in Shorewood because they get to go on the best walks and meet new dog friends!

Entry #4 – Bindi

We live on a busy corner in Shorewood and people and pups walk past our yard all day, every day. Bindi is the first to greet them through the fence and jump for joy (literally) as they walk by. Whether it's pups or people, she's happy to see everybody. It's always nice seeing people laugh and smile at her as she's wagging her tail at them, and I hope that small encounter brightens their day just a bit!

Entry #5 – Charlie and Tinkerbell

Charlie and Tinkerbell make me laugh at how they play. Charlie might be huge compared to Tinker but he plays so nice with her. Letting her wrestle his big head. He even let's her bite on his lips.

Entry #6 – Copernicus

I do hereby nominate my beloved ninety pound, two and one half year old Yellow Lab... Copernicus! He and I are likely familiar to many Shorewood residents as he, in his capacity as my “personal trainer,” leads me, weather permitting, on a twice daily 4.5 mile walk from our apartment at the Mosaic down Oakland to Edgewood, from Edgewood to Lake, from Lake to Oakland and then from Oakland to home. The next walk then follows the same route; except that it goes from north to south. He is ever alert for any sign of a squirrel and is sure to put almost anything that he comes across in his mouth; especially if it’s dead! He eats twice a day and there is never food in his bowl for more than a total of five minutes per day. He is adapting well to apartment living although that tail can be quite destructive on beer glasses and houseplants when the arrival of a visitor excites him. He is also quite good at licking away tears as I continue to grieve over the recent death of my wife. I do have to confess, however, that he is something of a bed hog. I hope that this doesn’t disqualify him!

Entry #7 – Ralphy

Ralphy the Westie.

He's always ready for a party! He loves playing soccer, but skateboards aren't his favorite!

Entry #8 – George Bailey

George Bailey has been our fur child for 8 years! His first few months were not easy but a wonderful rescue brought him into our lives. He has a fabulous, funny, and kind personality! I love whenever he meets kids on our long Shorewood walks, he makes them smile (maybe because he knows he will be rewarded with a couple of hand licks). Something he does that is oddly funny, is when he poops! When George goes the bathroom, he needs to find the “right” spot and then will spin a few times before completing the transaction. George Bailey would be a perfect mascot for the community that he loves!

Entry #9 – Finley

This is Finley! Finn is a Vizsla and makes us laugh because he is a tall, loving, clumsy 60lb puppy. He trips on steps, his feet slide wide apart on hard wood, he LOVES to be warm and snuggled constantly and he LOVES to sit in his brothers car seat when his brother goes to school!  You’ll see Finn running along Lake Dr, at the Estabrook dog park, or along the river all year long! Finley loves Shorewood!

Entry #10 – Eddie

Eddie is a seven-year-old lab mix… mixed with a very large, unknown breed. At 125lbs, he’s come a long way since he was discovered as a feral pup, living with his littermates in a drainage pipe in Alabama.

Motivated by cheese, he quickly learned several commands, so Edison seemed an approrpriate name to match his intelligence. As he’s matured, however, he’s more likely to enjoy chilling on the couch watching The Golden Girls, so Eddie seems to fit him better now.

Eddie’s easy-going nature and gentle-giant appearance would make him a great choice for the Shorewood mascot.

Entry #11 – Hank

Hank is a spunky one-year-old golden retriever who we adopted from a local rescue organization last summer. If Hank was a person, he would be Will Ferrell’s character, Buddy the Elf, from the movie Elf. He gets excited about the little things in life, loves and wants to meet everyone, and is happy-go- all of the time. He a has sweet, silly personality that keeps us smiling and laughing. Hank would make a great ambassador as he loves all things Shorewood, particularly the Estabrook dog park and beer garden and hanging at his favorite places on Oakland Avenue.

Entry #12 – Bailey

My dog Bailey makes me laugh because.... • She looks like a human in a dog costume. • She’s friendly to all people, even those whom she doesn’t know (yet) • She barks to get her dad out of bed, and then takes his spot in the bed • She is 75 pounds of fun!

Entry #13 – Fudge

Fudge is a Havanese, and 15 pounds of fluff. He loves people (especially "his" baby who he faithfully follows around), pizza night (if a chair is pulled away from the table slightly he'll hop up in a seat and look around hopefully waiting for a slice), and his favorite games include batting a tennis ball under our furniture and waiting for Dad to fetch it for him (only to pounce on it then knock back under the furniture), and stealing Dad's slippers--trying to hide and eat them (they must smell fascinating)!

Entry #14 – Pickles

This is Pickles. She is an 9 month old Basset hound. She takes her responsibilitys of Basset Hound Ambassador of Shorewood seriously. These duties include sniffing, licking, and trying to eat as much Hubbard Park goose poop possible (when her master doesn't intervene.) She's a loving pup, and she doesn't let her short legs and LONG ears get in the way of her duties. We love our dear hound so very much! She'll always be happy to receive pats and scratches from her fans.

Entry #15 – Olive

Meet Olive. Or Olive Biscuit. Or 'Doo.' She is a five-month-old Golden Doodle who is ambivalent towards cats and fears men who wear hats. She loves chicken, peanut butter, and sitting on my son's head. Her penchant for stealing socks and underwear is unrivaled. The Muppet is exceedingly affectionate and gives smooches like she's running for mayor. My daughter holds her like a baby on the daily and would happily dress her like a doll, if allowed. But puppy teeth feel like daggers and Olive is too savvy to be dressed so wacky.

Entry #16 – Ziggy

Ziggy makes our family laugh daily, one reason being that Ziggy doesn’t like to poo on grass. Its pretty funny, and actually makes us pretty happy too. As a puppy, we encouraged him to do his business in a certain part of the yard (the mulched area). He took to it! This allows us to keep the grassy area clean for the kids to play in and makes waste clean-up much easier. While on our walks, Ziggy will find a spot off the sidewalk and hang his ‘tail end’ over the curb (also making for easy pick up with doggy poo bags).

Entry #17 – Bella

Please see the below submission for Bella Mellen, Age 8. She is a black lab mix that was rescued by me 8 years ago when she was found walking on the side of a country road in Indiana. Bella makes our home loving; providing cuddles and way too many kisses to all who visit. She loves children, long walks, running with the Milwaukee Running Group- OMG, and treats. She is very well trained and would add a little sass to the campaign.

Entry #18 – Mika

My dog's name is Mika and she is a 3 year old rescue mutt. Here is my submission:

Mika makes me happy because she is always there for me. She never judges (like when I binge watch TV or eat ice-cream at 11pm), she never yells (even though she hates it when I vacuum) - she just loves unconditionally. Most importantly, she keeps me company during my boyfriend's deployment. She follows me around the house to keep me safe, she snuggles with me to keep me warm, and she looks at me with her big brown eyes to keep me cheerful. Mika was once an imperfect stray with her one floppy ear, but now she is my everything.

Entry #19 – Chipperdoodle

Hi! This is our happy pup, Chip or better known as Chippy or Chipperdoodle. Chip found his way into our hearts from Ruff Luck Dog Rescue. We had just moved in together and knew we had more love to give but weren’t prepared for how much he would make our hearts grow. He is silly, sweet, and sometimes naughty! He makes us happy because he reminds us to be playful, give unconditional love, to ALWAYS eat the bacon and to not take life so seriously. After all, how can you not smile being around a happy face like that!

Entry #20 – Cooper

This is Cooper. He came into my family’s life as a rescue puppy who needed a home, but in truth we had no idea how much he would enrich our lives.

His love has helped our family through the greatest challenges we have ever faced. Cooper was with my husband in his final moments. He has been with my daughter and I as we have worked through our loss. He seems to intuitively know when we need him, and just curls right up on a lap to snuggle.

Entry #21 – Pecos Bill

Pecos Bill's love for snuggles, chasing balls, and his people make him an incredible furry companion. His spirited tail wags serve as the perfect welcoming committee to all who enter "his" home. Pecos makes every run more fun as he finds joy in every step and inspires me to do to the same. He loves fiercely and embraces the silly. I laugh daily at his insistence on eating his meals when the humans sit down to eat, the way he hides toys in every room- just in case, and the way he "dances" with anyone he sees hugging.

Pecos Bill is a border collie mix.

Entry #22 – Jovie

Name: Jovie Breed: Husky/Shiba Inu Mix Description: Jovie is a rescue who brings so much love and joy to our family. Whenever we come home for the day she lets out the highest-pitch bark/shrill of excitement, which you can hear from outside the house. Describing it in writing doesn’t do it justice.

Entry #23 – Shoonie

Shoonie is throwing her hat into the ring for Shorewood spokesdog.

Here’s she is —

Wonderful things come in small packages!! Although she’s a teenie-weenie Chiweenie, Shoonie's a real show-stopper...and people-stopper! Whenever she's out doing her little wiggle-waggle walk and flashing her huge eyes, people stop whatever they are doing to call out "Awwwwww" and "OMG! She's so cute!" - and then of course, they stop to love her up a little. Shoonie always works her magic by spreading love and good feelings around her Shore-hood and at her favorite hang-out, Camp Bar.

Entry #24 – Reid

Attached you will find two pictures of Reid, our 2.5 year old Blue Heeler/English Shepard.

I simply could not pick between the two photos because they show how robust his personality is. I cannot not smile when he is smiling. But he also makes me laugh when he gets serious and quizzical. He is so funny on his daily walks through the community, watching everyone/everything he sees, with interest and curiosity. He loves to talk, and he has so many different sounds it genuinely seems like a conversation. He's helped us learn so much about dogs, and dogs in Shorewood, and would love to be a part of helping spread tips and awareness in the community.

Entry #25 – Jabo

Entry #26 – Sharkey

Sharkey- German Shepherd Sharkey is a giant headed, silly, sweet, and crazy puppy. She has a heart of gold and a soul filled with dancing stars. She has a beautiful energy that is contagious. She truly has a gift. She has so much love to give. She brings joy to everyone she meets. She is always down for an adventure. She goes to bed in a good mood and wakes up happy. Her head literally explodes with excitement she cannot contain every time I walk in the door. She makes me a better human. She is the light of my life.

Entry #27 – Gouda

Gouda is a true bright spot in our lives, and makes us laugh all of the time! Whether he’s giving me side- eye for sitting in his favorite spot on the couch, pawing at the covers in bed so that he can climb under them and lay down (with his head on the pillow like a true human), wiggling his whole body in excitement at the sight of one of his sweaters or pairs of pajamas, or making what we refer to as “dino noises” at anyone who dares to walk by him in public without paying him adequate attention. He's always smiling, and his tail rarely stops wagging. If that doesn't convince you - feel free to check out his instagram (@goudathepibble) where he entertains his nearly 11k followers on a regular basis.

Entry #28 – Baxter

I have had a number of neighbors (and complete strangers!) tell me Baxter should apply for this honor. It was SO hard to choose just one pic!

Baxter is a 11 month old Goldendoodle. He is such a sweet boy who takes a lot of pride in being our dog. When he’s not playing hide n seek around the house or running joyful circles around our backyard, he can be found cuddling up with any of his family members. Favorite toy: anything he can’t have (like socks) Favorite food - see above Favorite color- red Favorite people- all people. We can barely leave the house without people stopping to talk to Baxter, the best muppet in Shorewood :) He can be followed on insta @baxtergramed

Entry #29 – Thorissa

Meet Thorissa, my foster that I decided to keep and officially adopt. She came from an implorable puppy mill mass disposal where her only purpose was to mass produce puppies to sell. All the while while she was trapped, and severely neglected. She didn’t look at all like a German Shepherd. Now she stays by my side, lovingly gazing at me with her sparkling eyes and her tail wagging. She makes me happy by calming and reassuring all the new fosters, helping save more lives. As a veteran with PTSD, she lets me know that I’m never alone and that I am appreciated and loved every day.

Entry #30 – Winnie

This sweet little rescue mutt is Winnie. She's probably part terrier. She makes us laugh every day. Whenever we come home, she runs around in circles and covers us in wet kisses. She'll shake your hand, and she gives kisses on request. She barks at visitors (until they sit down, and then she's happy to have company), and she sings along with fire engine sirens as if she recognizes the howling of old friends. When she's being a little naughty, she flops belly-up as if to say, "I'm not sorry, but please love me anyway!" Which we really, really do.

Entry #31 –

This is our Irish Chihuahua Paddy. (Born on St.Patrick's day, so says the Humane society).

He protects our homestead with his terrifying bark and imposing six pound body, complete with fashionable sweater. He hangs by our two year old often, as he looks like an average sized dog next to a two and a half foot human. His spot is a pillow by the sun, in your lap, or next to whichever vent is pumping out the most heat, but once summer comes, he can keep up on walks with the big guys and would lounge in the backyard sun for hours. He is our furry friend who makes us smile.

Entry #32 – Lucy

Dog's Name: Lucy (Nicknames: Lucy Goose, the Goose, Lucy Fur) Breed: Mini American Eskimo Dog

Lucy makes me happy every day. She is so excited to see me when I come home and ready to play. We’ve been together for 8 years, and she’s been my rock through moves, relationships, and career ups and downs. She makes me laugh the most when she sees fresh snow, looking from me to the snow repeatedly, and then prancing through it happily. She always looks like she’s smiling and people love to stop to pet her and tell her how beautiful she is and, trust me, she knows she’s pretty. She’s ready for all of the pets.

Entry #33 – Saide Mae

Sadie is 9 years old and was adopted from the Wisconsin Humane Society. She makes our family laugh every day be being the ultimate “mama dog” to our 2 human children. She worries and frets over them, but does not hesitate to steal their snacks when they leave them unattended. Her sweet personality would make her the perfect Shorewood Mascot.

Entry #34 – Echo

Echo joined our family in January of 2019, an adoption from the Wisconsin Humane Society and he has been making us laugh every day since. Echo is a goofy dog with 2 different colored eyes, who loves to play with our other dog , chase remote control cars, and snuggle our human children. Some of his funnier moments have come while trying to distract my husband (who works from home) by jumping between him and the computer, and starting a wrestling match with our other dog behind the desk chair. Echo loves all people and gets along well with other dogs.

Entry #35 – Tucker

Tucker has brought us many laughs since joining our family. Right now he enjoys plunging his face and head into the snow and leaves it in there for a few seconds as if he is playing hide and seek with us. He likes to chase my siblings and I down the sledding hills as if he is going to catch us but since he runs kind of lopsided, he hasn’t caught us once yet. Tucker also enjoys meeting new dogs at the dog park but the highlight of his trips there is greeting each human. He brings many smiles to their faces as he wiggles himself close to their legs or maybe even between their legs if he has a bigger dog hot on his trail 

Entry #36 – Nova

Nova is a star in our family. She is a compassionate, loving, silly pup that brings a ton of brightness into the world. She shows us empathy when we are sad and shares in our excitement when we are happy! Nova vigorously wags her tail, resisting her strong urge to jump on us, every time we walk through the door. She loves playing with other dogs on our walks around Shorewood. She is full of energy & love that she shares endlessly. Like a star, that energy gets released and radiates through us all.
