Happy Fish: A Novel Supplementation Technique to Prevent Iron Deficiency Anemia in Women in Rural Cambodia by Christopher V. Charles A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Science Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Christopher V. Charles, April, 2012 ABSTRACT HAPPY FISH: A NOVEL IRON SUPPLEMENTATION TECHNIQUE TO PREVENT IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA IN WOMEN IN RURAL CAMBODIA Christopher V. Charles Advisors: University of Guelph, 2012 Professor Alastair J.S. Summerlee Professor Cate E. Dewey Maternal and child undernutrition are a significant problem in the developing world, with serious consequences for human health and socio-economic development. In Cambodia, 55% of children, 43% of women of reproductive age, and 50% of pregnant women are anemic. Current prevention and control practices rely on supplementation with iron pills or large-scale food fortification, neither of which are affordable or feasible in rural Cambodia. In the study areas, 97% of women did not meet their daily iron requirements. The current research focuses on the design and evaluation of an innovative iron supplementation technique. A culturally acceptable, inexpensive and lightweight iron ingot was designed to resemble a fish species considered lucky in Khmer culture. The ingot, referred to as ‘try sabay’ or ‘happy fish’, was designed to supply iron at a slow, steady rate. Iron leaching was observed in water and soup samples prepared with the iron fish when used concurrently with an acidifier. More than 75% of daily iron requirements can be met with regular use. Its use in the common pot of soup or boiled water provides supplementation to the entire family.

  • Enhancing Healthcare Decision-Making Process: Findings from Orthopaedic Field
administrative sciences Article Enhancing Healthcare Decision-Making Process: Findings from Orthopaedic Field Irene Schettini * , Gabriele Palozzi and Antonio Chirico Department of Management and Law, University of Rome Tor Vergata, 00133 Rome, Italy; [email protected] (G.P.); [email protected] (A.C.) * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +39-0672-595-401 Received: 29 October 2020; Accepted: 20 November 2020; Published: 25 November 2020 Abstract: In the healthcare field, the decision-making process is part of the broad spectrum of “clinical reasoning”, which is recognised as the whole process by which a physician decides about patients’ treatments and cares. Several clinicians’ intrinsic variables lead to this decisional path. Little is known about the inference of these variables in triggering biases in decisions about the post-discharge period in the surgical field. Accordingly, this research aims to understand if and how cognitive biases can affect orthopaedists in decision-making regarding the follow-up after knee and hip arthroplasty. To achieve this goal, an interview-based explorative case study was run. Three key-decisional orthopaedic surgeons were interviewed through a quality control tool aimed at monitoring the causes and effects of cognitive distortions. Coherently with the literature, eight biases come to light. All the interviewees agree on the presence of four common biases in orthopaedic surgery (Affect heuristic, Anchoring, Halo effect, Saliency). The other biases (Groupthink, Availability, Overconfidence, Confirmation), instead, depending on specific physicians’ intrinsic variables; namely: (i) working experience; (ii) working context. This finding contributes to the debate about the application of cognitive tools as leverage for improving the quality of clinical decision-making process and, indirectly, enhancing better healthcare outcomes.

Breeders used by CT Pet Stores Based on testimony submitted to the Task Force Concerning the Sale of Cats and Dogs at CT Pet Shops from Inhumane Origins by Karen Rasmussen, Wilton, CT 12/4/2013 Research method In Connecticut, a Certificate of Origin must accompany each dog sold or offered for sale in Connecticut pet shops. Such Certificate must identify the name and address of the breeder and broker of the dog, and be filed with the CT Department of Agriculture. CT Gen. Stat. 22-354 (b). The information listed in the Certificates is then plugged into USDA’s breeder and broker database to obtain the size of each operation and complete violation history. Photographs have been obtained from the USDA through FOIA. Format This report provides an alphabetical listing of 335 breeders who had USDA violations during the period 2010 – 2012. Each breeder was used by at least one pet shop in Connecticut. In 2012, over 600 breeders supplied Connecticut pet stores. 335 of these had USDA violations. 156 were unlicensed. 1 Adkins, Don & Kathleen 43A3998 2010 Anderson, Linda C. 42A0207 Disgusting reports 2010, 2011, 2012 Asmussen, Pam 46A0409 SIXTEEN violations at 5/12 pre-license inspection Bagley Sr, Gary 43A5573 2010. • Talk to the Paw
Talk to the Paw Support Dogs, Inc. Volunteer Newsletter Spring 2015 Support Dogs, Inc Volunteer Newsletter TOUCH Program - Reformatted In 2013, the VAC began looking at the TOUCH program. We know the program is wonderful but we wanted to see if there were any changes or improvements that would make it even better. After careful consideration, in 2014, we implemented a segmented class format, along with an instructor intern program. The segmented class format allows volunteers to get out in the community sooner and also allows the handler to participate in only the segments desired. TOUCH still begins with a temperament evaluation, after successful completion of an adult obedience class. Next, instead of the 12-week class, there are segmented classes. First, the team starts with a four-week TOUCH Prep Class. After successful completion of this class, the team can move to the Adult class and/or the Paws for Reading class. The Paws class requires a recommendation from the instructor and is a two hour class. The Adult class is a five-week class. After successful completion of the Adult segment, the team can begin visiting in adult facilities. If desired and if instructor recommended, the team may enroll in the Children’s class. Upon successful completion of the four-week Children’s class, the team can visit in non-acute child facilities. This does not include Children’s Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital or Ranken Jordan. In order to visit these facilities, the Acute class is required. The Acute segment is a two- week class. Before a handler can take the Acute class, the team must have made 12 visits in six months or twelve months at a non-acute child facility.
