Several clinicians’ intrinsic variables lead to this decisional path. Little is known about the inference of these variables in triggering biases in decisions about the post-discharge period in the surgical field. Accordingly, this research aims to understand if and how cognitive biases can affect orthopaedists in decision-making regarding the follow-up after knee and hip arthroplasty. To achieve this goal, an interview-based explorative case study was run. Three key-decisional orthopaedic surgeons were interviewed through a quality control tool aimed at monitoring the causes and effects of cognitive distortions. Coherently with the literature, eight biases come to light. All the interviewees agree on the presence of four common biases in orthopaedic surgery (Affect heuristic, Anchoring, Halo effect, Saliency). The other biases (Groupthink, Availability, Overconfidence, Confirmation), instead, depending on specific physicians’ intrinsic variables; namely: (i) working experience; (ii) working context. This finding contributes to the debate about the application of cognitive tools as leverage for improving the quality of clinical decision-making process and, indirectly, enhancing better healthcare outcomes.

    SULLA RISCOPERTA DI LUDOVICO DE DONATI: SPUNTI DAL FONDO CAFFI * Come nel caso di altri artisti minori, Ludovico (o Alvise) de Donati rimase a lungo ignoto e la ricostruzione della sua carriera, precisata in maniera soddi- sfacente solo nell’arco degli ultimi decenni, iniziò nella metà del XVIII secolo 1. Il nome dell’artista sembra essere apparso per la prima volta nel 1752, quando il padre domenicano Agostino Maria Chiesa, spinto da intenti diversi dall’amore per l’arte, descrisse il trittico della chiesa di San Benigno a Berbenno (Sondrio) riportando l’iscrizione che lo dichiarava opera di «Aluisius de Donatis» 2. Questo ricordo tuttavia passò inosservato a causa della natura agiografica del testo. Al contrario fu prontamente registrato e godette di ampia diffusione il passo della Storia pittorica d’Italia (1795-1796) di Luigi Lanzi dove il pittore venne presentato come Luigi De Donati, comasco e discepolo del Civerchio, autore di non meglio specificate «tavole autentiche» 3.     ETHICS COMMISSION REPORT November 2009 SUMMARY After giving the Ethics Commission report to the House of Representatives earlier this afternoon, Governor Sanford has decided to make public that same document as part of his continued efforts to both fully cooperate with the Commission and share as much relevant information with the public as possible. We believe that when the full story is told, it will be clear that this Administration has kept a consistent eye out for the taxpayer. It is important to remember that we are still in the early stages of the ethics process, and that we continue to support the Ethics Commission being able to complete their work and then release all findings to the public. The steps are as follows: first, a preliminary report to determine whether or not there was anything even worth looking at (which was not unexpected as allegations had made headlines for months); next, will come our chance to shed light on any remaining questions when the Commission holds hearings; then, their conclusion will follow. Through this process, we will have the opportunity to show that Governor Sanford has complied fully with the law.
