Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 2002 29/1-2 The Dharma for Sovereigns and Warriors Onjo-ji^ しlaim for Legitimacy in Tengu zoshi H aruko Wakabayashi One of the recurring themes depicted in the i engu zoshi, a set of seven scrolls dated 1296,is the conflict among established temples of Nara and Kyoto. The present article focuses particularly on the dispute between Enryaku-ji (sanmon) and Onjo-ji {jimon) that took place during the thir teenth century as it is depicted in Tengu zoshi. The analysis of the texts, both visual and verbal, reveals that the scrolls are more sympathetic to Onjo-ji than Enryaku-ji. This is evident especially when the verbal texts of the Onjo-ji and Enryaku-ji scrolls are compared. Closer examination of the scrolls also shows that Onjo-ji claims superiority over all other established temples. This study shows how the scrolls reveal the discourse formed by the temples during disputes in the late Kamakura period in order to win sup port from political authorities. Tengu zoshi, therefore, in addition to being- a fine example of medieval art, is also an invaluable source for historical studies of late Kamakura Buddmsm. Enfolding narratives: Visualising the tales of Genji AND HEIKE on the EOLDING SCREEN Ihe celebrated Japanese narratives, The tale of Genji (Genji monogatari) (p. 83) and The tales of Heike (Tleike monogatari) (pp. 76-7) are the subject of three folding screens {bydbu) in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia. The tale of Genji, authored around the turn of the eleventh century by Lady Murasaki Shikibu (died C.1014), is a courtly epic of fifty-four chapters which chronicles the life, loves and heirs of the protagonist Genji, an ideal courtier nicknamed the ‘Shining Lord’.^ The tales of Heike, with its best-known variant recorded in the mid-thirteenth century, is a warrior tale of twelve books, which centres around the tragic destruction of the Taira hy the Minamoto during the Genpei War (1180-85). -

Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Takuya Hino All rights reserved ABSTRACT Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino In this dissertation I provide a detailed analysis of the role played by the Tachikawa-ryū in the development of Japanese esoteric Buddhist doctrine during the medieval period (900-1200). In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship. One day the swordsmen go hunting in Kitano and see her in the woods. She is carrying a large basket and a whip, and when they call out to her she starts to run away. Suspicious, they open her basket and find a chopped-up snake inside. She would whip the bushes to make snakes crawl out, then kill them and sell the meat as dried fish, the story goes. A Basket of Sushi Ayu A story from the "KONJAKU MO NOG ATARI": A PEDDLER WOMAN gets drunk and falls asleep near the gate of a house. When she wakes up, she accidentally vomits in her basket of SUSHI AYU. She is very upset, but then she simply mixes the vomit into the food. Since sushi ayu looks rather like vomit, the customers don't notice, but those who discover what she has done lose their taste for sushi ayu, the story goes. A Demonic Oil Jug A story from the "KONJAKU MO NOG ATARI": О no no Miya, the MINISTER of the Right, leaves the palace one day at noon, and as he heads down OMIYA OJI, an oil jug flies in front of his carriage. He watches as it enters the keyhole of a house gate. -

Cameron Hurst III Heian is Japan’s classical age, when court power was at its zenith and aristocratic culture flourished. Understandably, it has long been assiduously studied by historians. The Heian period is the longest of the accepted divisions of Japanese history, covering almost exactly 400 years. Its dates seem obvious: ‘‘The Heian period opened in 794 with the building of a new capital, Heian-kyo¯, later known as Kyoto. The Heian period closed in 1185 when the struggle for hegemony among the warrior families resulted in the victory of Minamoto no Yoritomo and most political initiatives devolved into his hands at his headquarters at Kamakura.’’1 Although the establishment of a new capital would seem irrefutable evidence of the start of a new ‘‘period,’’ some argue that the move of the capital from Nara to Nagaoka in 784 better marks the beginning of the era. Indeed, some even consider the accession of Emperor Kammu in 781 a better starting date. Heian gives way to the next period, the Kamakura era, at the end of the twelfth century and the conclusion of the Gempei War. The end dates are even more contested and include (1) 1180 and Taira no Kiyomori’s forced move of the capital to Fukuhara; (2) 1183 and the flight of the Taira from the capital; (3) 1185, the end of the war and Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa’s confirmation of Minamoto no Yoritomo’s right to appoint shugo and jito¯; or (4) 1192 and Yoritomo’s appointment as sho¯gun. -
Yoshitsune & the Thousand Cherry Trees
English Journal of JSTR Yoshitsune & The Thousand Cherry Trees: A Reading Uchiyama Mikiko Translated by Alan Cummings Dan 1 & 2: Was there ever a battle at Dannoura? Is it possible that Emperor Antoku1, Tomomori2 and Kiyotsune3 never drowned beneath the waves of the western seas? Or could those who died have been imposters? Courtiers’ diaries from 1184 and 1185 had already recorded false reports of the death in battle of some generals and tales of substitute heads being presented for inspection.4 So, even amongst the huge quantity of Heike tales generated in Japan in the Kamakura, Muromachi and Tokugawa periods, this is a story that would have possessed a considerable degree of believability. However, we must also note that there was a formal recording in the offi cial court records of the deaths of Emperor Antoku, Tomomori and Kiyotsune, based on a report from Minamoto no Yoshitsune. It was these records that would go on to become the unalterable offi cial his- tory. The prologue of the 1747 puppet play Yoshitsune senbon zakura (Yoshitsune & The Thousand Cherry Trees) begins by summoning up that offi cial history. Ichikawa Ennosuke III’s recent kabuki production of parts of the play, Yoshitsune senbon zakura: Ikari Tomomori / Yoshinoyama (Yoshitsune & The Thousand Cherry Trees: Tomomori & The Anchor / Mt. Yoshino, Shinbashi Enbujō, 1987), was greeted by largely positive reviews. If it had been acknowl- edged that playwrights Akimoto Matsuyo and Shinoda Masahiro had in fact created a new play by combining the original with other texts by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, then Ennosuke’s experiment would be beyond the scope of this essay. -

This focus on the human soul is largely attributed to Zeami Motokiyo 世阿弥元清 (c. 1363-c. 1443), the greatest playwright in the history of noh drama. This thesis, however, attempts a more comprehensive examination of the characteristics of noh plays by including works by Kanze Nobumitsu 観世信光 (1435-1516). Zeami and Nobumitsu wrote several demon noh plays, which are plays whose primary characters are demons. -
In Search for Chimeras: Three Hybrids of Japanese Imagination
IN SEARCH FOR CHIMERAS: THREE HYBRIDS OF JAPANESE IMAGINATION Raluca Nicolae [email protected] Abstract: In Greek mythology, the chimera was a monstrous creature, composed of the parts of multiple animals. Later, the name has come to be applied to any fantastic or horrible creation of the imagination, and also to a hybrid plant of mixed characteristics. In addition, the Japanese folklore has also produced examples of such an imaginative hybridization, such as Nue, Baku, Raijū. Nue is a legendary creature with the head of a monkey, the body of a raccoon dog, the legs of a tiger, and a snake like tail. It was killed by Minamoto no Yorimasa as the monster was draining the emperor out of energy, causing him a terrible illness. Baku is a spirit who devours dreams and is sometimes depicted as a supernatural being with an elephant’s trunk, rhinoceros eyes, an ox tail, and tiger paws. In China it was believed that sleeping on a Baku pelt could protect a person from pestilence and its image was a powerful talisman against the evil. Raijū (lit. “the thunder animal”) was a legendary creature whose body looked like a cat, a raccoon dog, monkey or weasel. Raijū appeared whenever a thunder struck, scratching the ground with animal like claws. The above mentioned examples indicate that monsters are not mere just metaphors of beastliness. Their veneration as well as rejection form the very the image of the numinous stark dualism: mysterium tremendum et fascinans (“fearful and fascinating mystery”) – as coined by Rudolf Otto.
