Guts and Tears Kinpira Jōruri and Its Textual Transformations Janice Shizue Kanemitsu In seventeenth-century Japan, dramatic narratives were being performed under drastically new circumstances. Instead of itinerant performers giving performances at religious venues in accordance with a ritual calendar, professionals staged plays at commercial, secular, and physically fixed venues. Theaters contracted artists to perform monthly programs (that might run shorter or longer than a month, depending on a given program’s popularity and other factors) and operated on revenues earned by charging theatergoers admission fees. A theater’s survival thus hinged on staging hit plays that would draw audiences. And if a particular cast of characters was found to please crowds, producing plays that placed the same characters in a variety of situations was one means of ensuring a full house. Kinpira jōruri 金平浄瑠璃 enjoyed tremendous though short-lived popularity as a form of puppet theater during the mid-1600s. Though its storylines lack the nuanced sophistication of later theatrical narra- tives, Kinpira jōruri offers a vivid illustration of how theater interacted with publishing in Japan during the early Tokugawa 徳川 period. This essay begins with an overview of Kinpira jōruri’s historical background, and then discusses the textualization of puppet theater plays. Although Kinpira jōruri plays were first composed as highly masculinized period pieces revolving around political scandals, they gradually transformed to incorporate more sentimentalism and female protagonists. The final part of this chapter will therefore consider the fundamental characteristics of Kinpira jōruri as a whole, and explore the ways in which the circulation of Kinpira jōruri plays—as printed texts— encouraged a transregional hybridization of this theatrical genre. -

Background Paper No.10 Japan’s Development Cooperation: A Historical Perspective September 2020 【遺稿】 Interrogating “Comprehensive Development:” The Colonial-Wartime Background to Japan’s Development Cooperation Aaron Stephen Moore Associate Professor, Arizona State University In Memoriam: History Professor Aaron Moore (1972-2019) by Jin Sato, Professor of The University of Tokyo Dr. Aaron Moore (Arizona State University), the author of this paper, passed away in September 2019. He did not have the time to complete the revision himself, but the final touches have been offered by his dear colleagues and friends, Profs. Hiromi Mizuno (University of Minnesota) and Ian Miller (Harvard University) at the request of his bereaved family. Professor Moore was an outstanding historian of modern Japan who focused on the intersection of technology, history, and geo-political power. With his excellent command of the Japanese language, he delved into the unexplored archives of the Japanese consulting company, Nippon Koei, during his fellowship in the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo in 2018. Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 2002 29/1-2 The Dharma for Sovereigns and Warriors Onjo-ji^ しlaim for Legitimacy in Tengu zoshi H aruko Wakabayashi One of the recurring themes depicted in the i engu zoshi, a set of seven scrolls dated 1296,is the conflict among established temples of Nara and Kyoto. The present article focuses particularly on the dispute between Enryaku-ji (sanmon) and Onjo-ji {jimon) that took place during the thir teenth century as it is depicted in Tengu zoshi. The analysis of the texts, both visual and verbal, reveals that the scrolls are more sympathetic to Onjo-ji than Enryaku-ji. This is evident especially when the verbal texts of the Onjo-ji and Enryaku-ji scrolls are compared. Closer examination of the scrolls also shows that Onjo-ji claims superiority over all other established temples. This study shows how the scrolls reveal the discourse formed by the temples during disputes in the late Kamakura period in order to win sup port from political authorities. Tengu zoshi, therefore, in addition to being- a fine example of medieval art, is also an invaluable source for historical studies of late Kamakura Buddmsm. It is slightly wide, and the widths at the moto and saki are not much different. The shinogi is wide, there is a slightly high shinogi, a large hiraniku, and a strong or substantial shape. The blade is thin, and there is a large sori and a chu-kissaki. The jihada is itame mixed with mokume and nagare hada, and some parts of the jihada are visible. There are thick dense ji- nie, and some chikei. The hamon is ko-gunome mixed with ko-notare and togari. There are ashi, a dense nioiguchi, slightly uneven nie, some hotsure, frequent kinsuji, niesuji,sunagashi, and small yubashiri.The boshi is midarekomi, the tip is yakizume, and there is hakikake and yubashiri. The nakago is o-suriage. The tip of the nakago is sakikiri, and the yasurime are katte-sagari. There is a one mekugi ana, and on the ura side, under the mekugi ana, there is a kinzogan-mei, along the center. -

Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Takuya Hino All rights reserved ABSTRACT Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino In this dissertation I provide a detailed analysis of the role played by the Tachikawa-ryū in the development of Japanese esoteric Buddhist doctrine during the medieval period (900-1200). In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship. The blade is thick, there is a slightly shallow sori and a long chu-kissaki. The jihada is a well forged itame, and some parts of the jihada are visible. There are thick dense ji-nie and frequent chikei. The hamon is ko-notare mixed with gunome, ko-gunome, and ko-choji. The overall hamon appearance is a low midare hamon. There are frequent ashi and yo, a dense nioiguchi, thick uneven small and large nie, and some places have nie- kuzure. There are frequent kinsuji, nie-suji, sunagashi, yubashiri, and tobiyaki. The boshi is midarekomi, and the entire boshi is nie–kuzure, especially on the ura side. The tips have hakikake, and there are nie-suji mixed with yubashiri. The horimono on the omote and the ura are futasuji-hi carved through the nakago. Sagami-no-kuni Goro Nyudo Masamune is known as a great master smith in the Japanese sword history. -
