Message from the Director On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Joint PhD in Educational Studies program, I would like to welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 academic year. I hope that the crisp air, bustling campuses, and warm fall beverages have rejuvenated everyone’s love of learning. I know they’ve certainly rejuvenated mine.

I would like to thank all the members of the 2017-2018 Program Committee for their efforts on behalf of the program. Drs. Paul Burger, Glenn Rideout and Dolana Mogadime remain as the program representatives from Lakehead University, , and respectively.

A special thank you to Dr. Vera Woloshyn who completed her term as director of the Joint PhD in Educational Studies. Dr. Woloshyn’s dedication and leadership have helped shape our successes over the past five years. We look forward to her continued participation in the program as an instructor, doctoral supervisor, and committee member.

The 2018 Doctoral Seminars were hosted at the Lakehead University this past July. The summer began with an Orientation Breakfast and welcome messages from Dr. Chander Shahi (Dean, Graduate Studies and Research in ), Dr. John O’Meara (Dean, Faculty of Education), and Dr. Paul Berger (Chair, Graduate Studies and Research, Faculty of Education), Gerry Martin (Aboriginal Elder) and myself. Dr. Susan Dion delivered a keynote address to students, faculty and staff on Monday, July 9th, 2018. Dr. Dion is a Potawatomi- Lenapé scholar who has been working in the field of education for more than thirty years. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at and a Director of the Master of Education Urban Orientation Breakfast, 2018 Summer Session Indigenous Cohort. Her research focuses on Lakehead University Indigenizing, Decolonizing and Realizing Indigenous Education, Urban Indigenous Education, Indigenous Student Well- being and Achievement. Other Orientation events included a facilitated Labyrinth Walk by Dr. David Greenwood and Ms. Devon Lee (PhD candidate from Lakehead University).

Finally, I would like to congratulate everyone on their successes and accomplishments over the past few months. It is a pleasure to acknowledge and celebrate these achievements in our newsletter.

Keynote Address Enunciation: Learning From the nIshnabek de’bwe wIn Project The Storytellers are Speaking With Dr. Susan Dion from York University.

Dr. Susan Dion is a Potawatomi-Lenapé scholar has been working in the field of education for more than thirty years. Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at York University, she is Director of the Master of Education Urban Indigenous Cohort. Her research focuses on Indigenizing, Decolonizing and Realizing Indigenous Education, Urban Indigenous Education, Indigenous Student Well-being and Achievement. Dr. Dion is currently principal investigator on a SSHRC Insight Grant titled nIshnabek de'bwe wIn // telling our truths, and is co-investigator on three SSHRC Partnership Grants. Dr. Dion works in collaboration with the District School Board Indigenous Education Centre and the Ministry of Education on research and program development. She is widely consulted by diverse community groups, workplaces, and institutions on developing methods for building more equitable, respectful relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people.

Dr. Susan Dion presented to an audience of students, faculty and staff of the Joint PhD program on Monday, July 9th at Lakehead University. Her presentation focussed on the complexities of doing research, addressing project design, navigating challenges, learning from and with participants and Knowledge Mobilization.

❖ Kristen Clarke (Brock University, 2011) On July 26, 2018 Kristen successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Informal Teacher Leaders: Secondary School Teachers’ Perceptions of How They Collaboratively Construct and Implement Classroom Assessment Policy and Practice.” Kristen’s supervisor was Dr. Denise Armstrong.

❖ Paola Borin (Brock University, 2011) On September 10, 2018 Paola successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Impact and Effects of Learning Outcome-Orientated Program Review Policy Changes in Ontario Universities.” Paola’s supervisor was Dr. Louis Volante.

❖ Julia Colella (The University of Windsor, 2013) On September 18, 2018 Julia successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Plagiarism Education, Perceptions and Responsibilities in Post-Secondary Education.” Julia’s supervisor was Dr. Terry Sefton.

❖ Betsy Keating (The University of Windsor, 2008) On June 11, 2018 Betsy successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Investigating Change in Teaching Assistants’ Conception of Teaching.” Betsy’s supervisor was Dr. Erika Kustra.

❖ Frank Nezavdal (Brock University, 2007) On September 19, 2018 Frank successfully defended his PhD dissertation entitled “A Qualitative Study of Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Awareness, Readiness, and Response to Discrepancy in Student Outcomes in a Greater Toronto Area School District.” Frank’s supervisor was Dr. Dolana Mogadime.

❖ Anouchka Plumb (The University of Windsor, 2008) On September 25, 2018 Anouchka successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled "International Students' Perceived University Schooling Experience in the Face of Internationalization.” Anouchka’s supervisor was Dr. Christopher J. Greig.

❖ Alexa Scully (Lakehead University, 2010) On October 2, 2018 Alexa successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled "Whiteness and Land in Indigenous Education in Canadian Teacher Education.” Alexa’s supervisor was Dr. Paul Berger.

Comprehensive Portfolio Defences

Jacqueline Beres (Brock University, 2014) Jacqueline successfully defended her PhD Comprehensive Portfolio on July 4, 2018 at Brock University. The title of her portfolio is “Start Where You Are, But Don’t Stay There: A Mantra for My Doctoral Journey.” Dr. Michelle McGinn is Jacqueline’s supervisor.

Cassandra Burgess (Lakehead University, 2015) Cassandra successfully defended her PhD Comprehensive Portfolio on September 14, 2018 at Lakehead University. The title of her portfolio is “My rEvolution of Thought, Understanding and Practice: A Comprehensive Portfolio.” Dr. Sonia Mastrangelo is Cassandra’s supervisor.

Linda Ismailos (Brock University, 2016) Linda successfully defended her PhD Comprehensive Portfolio on June 21, 2018 at Brock University. The title of her portfolio is “My Journey in Inclusive Education: A Comprehensive Portfolio.” Dr. Tiffany Gallagher is Linda’s supervisor.

Nicole Lee (University of Windsor, 2016) Nicole successfully defended her PhD Comprehensive Portfolio on October 10, 2018 at the University of Windsor. The title of her portfolio is “A Journey of Scholarship Rooted in Complexity, Clarity, and Cohesion: The Formation of Skills for Academia.” Dr. Geri Salinitri is Nicole’s supervisor.

Justin Teeuwen (The University of Windsor, 2015) Justin successfully defended his PhD Comprehensive Portfolio on August 20, 2018 at the University of Windsor. The title of his portfolio is “From Noise to Harmony: Developing my Cognitive Orchestra.” Dr. Geri Salinitri is Justin’s supervisor.

Grants and Awards

Gianluca Agostinelli (Brock University, 2016) Gianluca is the proud recipient of Brock University’s Student Athlete President's Award. This award recognizes high academic achievement and meaningful contributions to Brock's Varsity Athletics programming. Gianluca received the award this year based on his academic standing and athletic performance on Brock's Men's Tennis Team in 2017.

Funded for $216,093 over a two year period by Dean’s Compact on Exceptional Children Incentive Grant, funded by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Office for Exceptional Children.

Holly Prince (Lakehead University, 2018) Holly Prince, current PhD student, Project Manager, and co-investigator at The Centre for Education and Research on Aging & Health (CERAH) at Lakehead University was awarded the first ever

International Congress Innovator of the Year award as part of the 22nd International Congress on Palliative Care 2018 in Montreal, Quebec. This award recognizes individuals who have introduced change which has contributed to the improvement of hospice and palliative care in their health facility or program, community, country or beyond.

Holly Prince who is an Anishinabek woman from the Red Rock Indian Band, was nominated to present on “Developing Palliative Care for Communities: A Workbook.” The workbook is an 85- page PDF educational document accompanied by 83 administrative and program development tools and resources available in various formats. This work is part of a 5 year Aboriginal Health Intervention grant “Improving End-of-Life Care in First Nations Communities: Generating a Theory of Change to Guide Program and Policy Development” (EOLFN) that was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research led by Dr. Mary Lou Kelley. The workbook and all associated tools and resources is available for download at no cost on the Improving End-of-Life for First Nations website.

Kelsey Robson (Lakehead University, 2017) Kelsey Robson, Joint PhD student won the Institute of Italian Studies Graduate Award for her research on Reggio Emilia Kindergartens. This award is based on academic excellence and a research topic that contributes to the promotion and appreciation of the Italian culture Kelsey travelled to Italy as part of her research, visiting Reggio schools to study their approach to early childhood education.

In a published paper co-written with her supervisor, Dr. Sonia Mastrangelo, Kelsey describes the philosophy of the Reggio approach as guided by 12 principles: “collaboration, the image of the child, environment as a third teacher, relationships, transparency, documentation, pedagogical documentation, provocation, progettazione (term used to describe curriculum), one hundred languages of children, respect, and reciprocity.”

Gianluca Agostinelli (Brock University, 2016) In August 2018 and under the guidance of Dr. Hilary Brown, Gianluca has recently taken on the role of Practicum Advisor in the Department of Educational Studies at Brock University St. Catharines campus. As Practicum Advisor, Gianluca is responsible for the observation, mentorship, and evaluation of teacher candidates in the Consecutive Education program. Within this role, Gianluca will be advising students who wish to teach across the Primary/Junior/Intermediate panels and he will be working closely with Dr. Hilary Brown over the upcoming months to facilitate two courses: EDBE 8F01 (Teaching in the Ontario Context P/J/I) and EDBE 8Y02 (Integrating Teaching, Learning, and Assessment P/J/I). This Fall term, Gianluca will also teaching EDUC 4P19: Foundations of Curriculum and Assessment I/S.

Erin Cameron Alumnus Erin Cameron (graduated 2014) accepted a tenure-track faculty position at the School of(Lakehead Medicine (NOSM) University, in September 2010) 2017 in medical education/curriculum development. Her interests Prior to joining NOSM, Dr. Cameron was a faculty member in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation at Memorial University of Newfoundland. On a personal level, Dr. Cameron describes joining NOSM as a “coming home” to Northern Ontario to many friends and family. She is a mother of four little ones (ages 6,4,2-twins), an outdoor enthusiast, and an occasional athlete.

Jason Bent Ellis (University of Windsor, 2005) Alumnus Jason Brent Ellis (graduated 2007) graduate of Social, Cultural, Political Contexts of Education field of study was recently promoted to full Professor in the 2017-2018 academic year at Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio, USA.

Sarah Pash (Lakehead University, 2014) Alumnus Sarah Pash (graduated 2014)has been elected as Chairperson of the Cree School Board. The Cree School Board graduation rate is one of the lowest graduation rates in Quebec. Pash is committed to improving the graduation rate through academic, emotional and social support.

Dr. Pash is from the Cree Nation of Chisasibi and has a background in First Nations education, education and language research, culture, and language maintenance. She has experience in Eeyou and Indigenous Education as a teacher, University instructor, education consultant, researcher, and author.

Laxmi Pathak (Lakehead University, 2013) Alumnus Laxmi Pathak (graduated 2017) has engaged in two new employment opportunities in 2018 including becoming an Academic Writing Coach for Graduate Students in January and in July, working as a Contract Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, both at Lakehead University.

Alumni Profiles

Melissa Oskinnegish (Lakehead, 2013) Dr. Melissa Oskineegish graduated from the Joint PhD in Educational Studies Program in 2018 from the Social, Cultural and Political Contexts of Education field of study. She is currently assisting with two research projects out of Lakehead University and works as a consultant for various Indigenous education institutes in the Thunder Bay area. Upon completion of her dissertation, she has submitted three articles to academic journals that disseminate her research work in the Joint PhD program. Her research area includes Indigenous education, teacher education, cultural competency education, and Indigenous research methodology.

Frank Nezavdal (Brock University, 2007) Dr. Frank Nezavdal graduated from the Joint PhD in Educational Studies Program in 2018 from the Social, Cultural, Political Contexts in Education field of study. His dissertation focused on opportunities in data-informed decision- making practices in the service of equity. Dr. Nezavdal’s work explores ways in which educational policies that have privileged achievement outcomes above other factors have hindered the systematic redress of inequities in education. Frank has worked in public education for two decades, first as an elementary classroom teacher and later as a special education resource teacher. He has served as an Instructor at Brock University in the Faculty of Education where he developed and taught M.Ed. courses on Research Methodologies, Educational Leadership, and Educational Change. He has also taught in the M.Ed. International Student Program. Today, Dr. Nezavdal works as an instructional research consultant with the Halton District School Board and represents the board as co-chair of the Research Committee at Our Kids Network, a provincially recognized partnership of agencies supporting children and youth.

Boguslawa D. Gatarek (University of Windsor, 2009) Dr. Gatarek graduated from the Joint PhD in Educational Studies Program in 2018 with a specialty in Cognition and Learning. During her studies she was a part of the team that developed a cutting-edge curriculum for a new program in Humane Studies at Madonna University, Michigan, USA, only second in that field in North America. Since her graduation, Boguslawa received a promotion to the position of Co-director of the Master of Science in Humane Studies Program, in which she also has taught for the last six years. She works on online course development for Madonna University using the standards of Quality Matters, an international non-profit organization providing guidelines, training, and assessments in quality assurance for online education. As sessional instructor, Boguslawa currently teaches graduate Curriculum Theory and Development course at University of Windsor. Her research interests include humane education, cognition and learning, curriculum design, online course development, and research methodology. She lives in Toronto, where she is actively involved in community humane educational outreach.
