At the center of the debate on racial equality and discrimina- tion in the U.S. is the issue of educational opportunities afforded racial minorities. Packer’s writing, which appeared mainly between 1945 and 1977, blends popular narrative with contemporary social and political discourses. Her first main works, three volumes of memoirs published between 1945 and 1953, cover her experience of a wide area of the world before, during and after the Second World War: South Africa, Britain, the Mediterranean and the Balkans, and China. In the early 1950s she also toured extensive areas of colonial "Darkest Africa." When Packer retired to the Cape with her British husband, Admiral Sir Herbert Packer, after an absence of more than 25 years, she adopted fiction as an alternative literary mode. Her subsequent production, ten popular romantic novels and a further three volumes of memoirs, is notable for the density of its sociopolitical commentary on contemporary South Africa. This thesis takes as its starting-point the dilemma, formulated by the South African critic Dorothy Driver, of the white woman writing within a colonial environment which compels her to adopt contradictory, ambivalent and oblique discursive stances and strategies. -

After disembarking from the cramped and unsanitary quarters of the steamship, they wearily endured the endless lines and official inspections of the Ellis Island immigrant processing sta- tions. With the successful end of the first phase of their "journey of tears," they began the next phase of social and cultural adaptation within the more comfortable boundaries of Little Italy. New national and social class identi- ties overlapped with familiar identities of region, village, and kin. -

The World Bank Data Survey from 2004 is used to investigate different variables in which the presence of significant influences (ethnicity, citizenship, education, territory) on building national identity. After more than three centuries of white domination, there has finally been a relatively peaceful, orderly transfer of power to the black majority. As stated by outgoing president F. Alan Grubb ABSTRACT In 1958, the Charlotte City Council voted to demolish the community of Brooklyn for the purpose of creating a better environment for its residents and attracting business opportunities to the city. Over a ten-year period, over 9,000 residents would be forced to move to the outskirts of the city as the history of Brooklyn was erased. The history of urban renewal in Charlotte has been reported from the perspective of politicians, city planners, and businessmen who have touted the benefit of the city’s efforts. The historical literature has neglected to tell the story of those who were directly affected by the city’s initiative, and this work seeks to reveal the history of urban renewal from the perspective of those who were directly affected by its implementation. -

The Influence of the Tomlinson Report on Racial Separation in Church and State at the Dawn of Apartheid
“Good mission policy is good state policy in South Africa”: The influence of the Tomlinson Report on racial separation in church and state at the dawn of apartheid Willem Saayman Department of Church History, Christian Spirituality and Missiology, University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa Abstract The author studies the development of the single, multiracial Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) into a “family” of 10 racially separated churches, especially in the light of the findings of the Tomlinson Report, published in 1955. The Commission wanted to bring the relationship between mission policy and state policy in South Africa (SA) into line with (and indeed under control of) the apartheid policy of the National Party. The author concludes that the DRC instituted the first racially separated church in 1881 on the basis of the practical situation whereby black and white members had grown into separate congregations as a result of the 1857 decision. In the 1940s and 1950s an ideological-theological justification started develop- ing based on German missiological thinking as articulated especially by Keysser and Gutmann. The author finds that the Tomlinson Commission based their findings and recommend- ations on a mistaken view of African Christianity in South Africa at that time. The findings of the Tomlinson Report did, however, seem to confirm the ideological development taking place, thus strengthening the hand of those wishing to intro- duce a theological justification for racially separated churches ex post facto. As a result serious damage was done to the credi- bility of the Church and Christian mission in South Africa. Introduction The Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa traces its origins to European colonisation (by the Dutch) in 1652. -

Why do the children of Chinese and Korean immigrants in the United States, regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds, excel and succeed in the educational arena in disproportionately large numbers? This paper draws on my prior ethnographic studies of the Chinese and Korean immigrant communities in Los Angeles to develop a community perspective for explaining how neighborhoods are shaped by ethnicity and how ethnic communities generate resources conducive to social mobility that benefit coethnic members to the exclusion of non- coethnic members sharing the same physical space.
