Dear Fellow Members,

We have a problem. Only a few of you come to the meetings. I can't figure it out. We try to have interesting programs. Sometimes they cover genealogy topics. Sometimes they're more historical in nature. Nothing seems to work. What's the problem? What are we doing wrong? I wish the members would tell us. The officers serve at your pleasure, but we can 't read your minds. So, in light of the decline in attendance l am going to propose at the next board meeting that we decrease the number of meetings to only one or two per session. In other words, one, possibly two meetings in the fall and the same in the winter/spring. I would really like to hear from members in the Roanoke area as to how they feel about this change. Please feel free to call or e-mail me.

In this issue of the VAN we'll conclude the Covington, VA City Directory. There is still more of the Grant Bryant Funeral Home Books to be published. Since the index to the 2001 VAN and the index to this year's VAN will contain reference to all the surnames in the books we have decided to let this serve as the cumulative index. Hold on the your VANs!1

In September the Roanoke Public Library and the Virginia Room will host a one-day genealogy workshop featuring Sheila Steele Hunt. There is a registration fee. See the bottom of the table of contents page for all the information. Additionally, at the April meeting the society presented the library with a check for $1 ,000 to help cover the cost of purchasing the 1930 Virginia Census and Soundex.

Finally, I call your attention to the proposed changes to the by-laws on page 75. We will vote on them at a fall meeting.

Happy Hunting , K~ Karen Kappesser, President 514 Scalybark Drive Blue Ridge VA 24064-1328 Telephone: (540) 977-0067 E-mail: [email protected]

Check it out... . . Washday 1916

Years ago a Kentucky grandmother gave the new bride the following receipt, for washing clothe>...s. It appears below just as it was written, and despite the spelling, has a bit of philosophy.

1. Bi \t fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. 2.Set rubs so srroke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. 3. Srove one h:>le cake of lie soap in bi I in water. 4. Sort thir.g, mike three piles. 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pi le work britches and rags. 5.To rrake starch, stir flour in cood water to smooth, then thin down with bi Ii n water. 6.Take white things.rub diriy spots on board, scrub hard, and then bi l e. Rub colore:ci dont bi le, just rinch and starch. 7. Take things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then ri nch, and starch. 8. Hang old rags on fence. 9. Spread tea towels on grass. 10.Pore rinch water in flower bed. 11.Scrub porch with hot soapy water. 12.Turn tubs upside down. 13. Go put on house dress, srrooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

Hang this above your automatic washer, and when things look black, read it again.

Tombstones and flowers . Rea.?er Mary Williams of Pulaski pi:o vid~ tiu: week's digital camera news by shanng tips for using her Olympus D-490 ~oom camera to record tOrnbstones relat mg to her genealogy research. . "I am dabbling in genealogy and also like to go to vartous cemeferies to make lists of all the stones. It is very tirne conswning te try to write out all the infor mation or expensive to take pictures. with ~ 35 mm and" have them de:velqped,'' Wil li~ .:wrote. I have fourid that digital worllS fine for this purpose. The 8 MB card that came with ~e camera at the low est resolution gives me 139 pictUres, and the 32 MB card I bought will give me 399." , Initially, Williams hesitated to use the lowest resolution setting on her camera but finds it works well and produces read able stones. She transcribes the informa- . tion on the stones from the screen and then erases the images. She also reminds us that the camera cards are dropping in price. A year ago, she paid more than $100 for a 32 MB card, but she recently bought a 64 MB card for about $30. Nothing solves the battery need, so it is .necessary to have two sets of recharge ables, she said. If you wish to take a look at some of Williams' non-cemetery art, check out the daylily photo albwu on her Web site, www.pictuietrail.com/maryfrances/ 296651.

!he above article appeared in the March 12, 2002 issue of the Roanoke Times. Mary Williams ts a member of the society. In future issues of the VAN we wil! publish her tr~nscription of R~d~ord, Virginia's Central Cemetery. The original copy was gwen to the so~1ety by Ms. Wtlhams and placed in the Virginja Room. We feel that those members outside the area would also enjoy seeing it .

My husband and I have a dioital camera and we have fow1d it a great help in recording our family history. We've used it 10 copy photographs while visiting ~amily, much easier then trying to find a copy machine! It also g ives clear close ups of text matenat You load the photos into your computer where you can view or print them. A 1.3 magapixel camera is adequate for most needs. It will give you 4x6 prints that rival regular 3 5 millimeter ones. Many photo centers no\" will make prints from digital sources. You can even order prints online at WVl.T'\N . shutterfly.com or wv.rw. Kodak.com You simply upload your images to the website and your prints are mailed you usually the ne>...'t day.
