2018 Highlights - Annual Report 2018* Camp Board of Directors Backpack Adventure Camp once again saw over 85 children immersed in nature. Led by The President - Tony Fiorato Ridges staff, the four one-week sessions were packed with adventure, exploration and discovery. The Vice-President - Maury Sullivan campers learned about different insects in the stream, the many different kinds of trees in the forest, Secretary - Sandy Miller caught frogs and snakes, and even made it down to the beach for “Friday beach day”! Treasurer - Rob Davis School Programs Directors Linda Brooks In 2018, Ridges staff worked with kindergarten (3 classes), 1st grade (2 classes) classrooms at Cynnthia Crock Gibraltar Elementary School in Fish Creek. The staff worked directly with the teachers to provide a Jim Flint once a month experience in the back yard (Peninsula State Park) of the school. Students learned Vicki Medland about orienteering, insects, animals, seasons, and even how to just sit and listen to nature. Jane Whitney Preschool Programs Bill Wolff Cindy Wolter The Northern Door Children’s Center brought their preschool-aged students to The Ridges for a six-week experience in the fall of 2018. Every Monday, 16 children explored The Ridges Sanctuary. Staff Based out of the Kaye Cabin, the students and teachers had 2-3 hours of nature-based experiences. Executive Director 2018 also saw the Peninsula Preschool return for its second year. Every Wednesday, 13 students Steve Leonard were immersed in the Sanctuary. A new trail was made to gain better access to the shore of Clark Lake. The day ended with an orchid hike led by Matt Peter and Tony Kiszonas, The Ridges staff. Range Light The Restore the Range Light capital campaign continued in 2018. With the first round of projects being completed in 2017, nearly $80,000 in cash and pledges was raised to continue the work in 2019. Range Light tours also continued through the 2018 summer and fall seasons. With a dedicated team of volunteer docents, The Upper Range Light had over 8,000 visitors. Planting 4 Pollinators The Ridges was awarded a grant by the Brookby Foundation to install pollinator gardens in front of the Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center. Four different gardens were planted by staff and volunteers; Shortgrass Prairie, Monarch Garden, Shady Woodland, and Tallgrass Prairie. There were also 4 raised bed gardens representing the four to demonstrate how people could plant their own back at home. Phase II: Donations to The Restore the Rangelight Campaign The Restore the Range Light Campaign reached another milestone in 2016, completing the fundraising of Phase 1: The Replacement of the roof shingles and renovation of the exterior light room. Built in 1869 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the Upper Range Light and its companion the Lower Range Light are the only lighthouses of this design that are still on range and functional as private navigational aids.
