GLOBALIZING MASCULINITY 1 Master’s Thesis Globalizing Masculinity: A CROSS-CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC VIDEOS Ana Flavia Ferreira Silva Semester 2 Student Number: 10275800 Supervisor: Anne-Marie van Oosten Date: Feb 2, 2018 Master’s Programme in Communication Sciences: Entertainment Communication GLOBALIZING MASCULINITY 2 Abstract Although hegemonic masculinity is still prevalent in popular media culture, recent changes to the gender scape have started to redefine discourses of hegemony. In the present study, a coding instrument was developed to measure the level of hegemonic masculinity across three countries: United States, Brazil, and South Korea. The analysis examined the assumption of the existence of hegemonic masculinity in contemporary music videos, and compared these discourses across the three different countries. Results suggest discourses of hegemonic masculinity could be changing on a global scale and that globalization may explain this change. This study is intended to add new contributions to explorations into the content of contemporary media in maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the role of hegemonic masculinity in media discourses today. Findings could benefit both practical and theoretical implications, since there is a scarcity of research that investigates cross-cultural representation of hegemonic masculinity in music videos. Keywords: Hegemonic masculinity, globalization GLOBALIZING MASCULINITY 3 Introduction Since the launch of MTV in 1981, the popularity of music videos -

The Globalization of K-Pop: the Interplay of External and Internal Forces
THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

A Computational Analysis of Information Structure Using Parallel Expository Texts in English and Japanese Abstract This thesis concerns the notion of 'information structure': informally, organization of information in an utterance with respect to the context. Information structure has been recognized as a critical element in a number of computer applications: e.g., selection of contextually appropriate forms in machine translation and speech generation, and analysis of text readability in computer-assisted writing systems. One of the problems involved in these applications is how to identify information structure in extended texts. This problem is often ignored, assumed to be trivial, or reduced to a sub-problem that does not correspond to the complexity of realistic texts. A handful of computational proposals face the problem directly, but they are generally limited in coverage and all suffer from lack of evaluation. To fully demonstrate the usefulness of information structure, it is essential to apply a theory of information structure to the identification problem and to provide an evaluation method. -

Purpose: To investigate the association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and lung cancer incidence in Koreans. Materials and Methods: This was a population-based case-control study covering 908 lung cancer patients and 908 controls se- lected from a random sample of people within each Korean province and matched according to age, sex, and smoking status. We developed land-use regression models to estimate annual residential exposure to particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over a 20-year exposure period. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Increases in lung cancer incidence (expressed as adjusted OR) were 1.09 (95% CI: 0.96−1.23) with a ten-unit increase in 3 PM10 (μg/m ) and 1.10 (95% CI: 1.00−1.22) with a ten-unit increase in NO2 (ppb). -

Rain or shine, however, the preparations for AKSE activities continue. On 21 August, 2008 the Fifth Korean Studies Convention for Graduate Students in Europe will begin, this year to be held in Leiden. Originally this was not an AKSE activity, the graduate students themselves taking charge of the entire organisation together with local teachers. This will not radically change, but AKSE will every year at the end of July include a request for funding of the convention of the following year to the Korea Foundation in its request for other activities and when necessary encourage graduate students to organise a convention. This will facilitate the work of the graduate students who are organising next year’s conference and promote continuity. Preparations are also under way for the 2009 AKSE Biennial Conference in Leiden. -
Korean Webtoons' Transmedia Storytelling
International Journal of Communication 13(2019), 2094–2115 1932–8036/20190005 Snack Culture’s Dream of Big-Screen Culture: Korean Webtoons’ Transmedia Storytelling DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada The sociocultural reasons for the growth of webtoons as snack culture and snack culture’s influence in big-screen culture have received little scholarly attention. By employing media convergence supported by transmedia storytelling as a theoretical framework alongside historical and textual analyses, this article historicizes the emergence of snack culture. It divides the evolution of snack culture—in particular, webtoon culture—to big-screen culture into three periods according to the surrounding new media ecology. Then it examines the ways in which webtoons have become a resource for transmedia storytelling. Finally, it addresses the reasons why small snack culture becomes big-screen culture with the case of Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds, which has transformed from a popular webtoon to a successful big-screen movie. Keywords: snack culture, webtoon, transmedia storytelling, big-screen culture, media convergence Snack culture—the habit of consuming information and cultural resources quickly rather than engaging at a deeper level—is becoming representative of the Korean cultural scene. It is easy to find Koreans reading news articles or watching films or dramas on their smartphones on a subway. To cater to this increasing number of mobile users whose tastes are changing, web-based cultural content is churning out diverse subgenres from conventional formats of movies, dramas, cartoons, and novels (Chung, 2014, para. 1). The term snack culture was coined by Wired in 2007 to explain a modern tendency to look for convenient culture that is indulged in within a short duration of time, similar to how people eat snacks such as cookies within a few minutes. -
