Destination: Angkor Archaeological Park The Complete Temple Guide 1 The Temples of Angkor Ak Yom The earliest elements of this small brick and sandstone temple date from the pre-Angkorian 8th century. Scholars believe that the inscriptions indicate that the temple is dedicated to the Hindu 'god of the depths'. This is the earliest known example of the architectural design of the 'temple-mountain', which was to become the primary design for many of the Angkorian period temples including Angkor Wat. The temple is in a very poor condition. Angkor Thom Angkor Thom ("Great City") was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. The walled and moated royal city covers an area of 9 km², within which are located several monuments from earlier eras as well as those established by Jayavarman and his successors. At the centre of the city is Jayavarman's state temple, the Bayon, with the other major sites clustered around the Victory Square immediately to the north. Angkor Thom was established as the capital of Jayavarman VII's empire, and was the centre of his massive building programme. Full of carvings, passages and photo opportunities. It originally served as a Buddhist monastery and school, engaging over 1000 monks. For a short period it was also the residence of King Jayavarman VII during the reconstruction of his permanent home in Angkor Thom. Neak Poan Temple 1 / 11 repspot1 A small island temple located in the middle of the last baray (the Preah Khan Baray or Jayatataka) to be constructed by a Khmer king in the Angkor area. The central temple sits at the axis of a cross or lotus pattern of eight pools. Originally known as Rajasri, Neak Pean took its modern appellation, which means ‘coiled serpents,’ from the encoiled nagas that encircled the temple. The temple is faced by a statue of the horse, Balaha, saving drowning sailors. Though originally dedicated to Buddha, Neak Pean contains several Hindu images. Phimeanakas Temple Impressive laterite and sandstone pyramid. The lack of surviving carvings leaves it artistically uninteresting, but it is the tallest scalable temple in Angkor Thom, providing a nice view from the top. The western staircase (at the back) is the most easily ascended. Located inside the ancient Royal Palace compound, Phimeanakas served as the king’s temple. Legend has it that the golden tower crowned the temple and was inhabited by a serpent, which would transform into a woman. The kings of Angkor were required to make love with the serpent every night, lest disaster befall him or the kingdom.

SUSANNE RUNKEL, HANS LEISEN, ESTHER VON PLEHWE-LEISEN AND ROBERT FUCHS Chapter 22 Interior Polychromy and Wall Paintings in Khmer Brick Temples of the 9th and 10th Century in Cambodia Susanne Runkel, Hans Leisen, Esther von Plehwe-Leisen and Robert Fuchs Abstract During research activities and conservation interventions on Khmer brick temples, traces of decorative paintings and polychromy have been discovered in the interior of the Prasats. A broad assessment in 19 selected brick temples of the 9th and 10th century AD has revealed that the inside was originally covered with wall paintings or polychromic decoration. This paper presents an overview of the different decoration systems derived from evidence found in the temples. The investigation focused primarily on the documentation of the important ornamental and figurative wall paintings in the temples Preah Ko in Rolous, Prasat Thom in Koh Ker and Prasat Neang Khmau in Takeo Province. Painting techniques were studied in detail and materials analyzed. Some of the decorative patterns were visualized by virtual reconstruction using forms from the stucco and stone ornaments of the outer decoration as a guide. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Khmer art. Introduction The restoration of Khmer temples in Cambodia has focused mainly on the preservation of building structures. Little attention is paid to the architectural polychromy inside the tower shrines of the ancient Khmer Empire. It seems unlikely that the Khmer artists, usually attentive to detail, left the interior of the towers as bare brick walls, especially considering their use as a sacred place for worshipping. Remains of painted wall decoration in two temples showing both ornamental and figurative painting have been described but not investigated, by Henri Parmentier (1913) and Rodolfo Lujan Lunsford (1996a: 41).

east of angkor description some 13 kilometers east of siem reap, on the road to phnom penh, is the roluos group of temples. this is the destination for the afternoon’s outing and transport from amansara by jeep can be arranged for about 3.00pm. the group comprises of three main temples, lolei, which is surrounded by an active wat, preah ko and bakong. jayavarman II chose hariharalaya (present day roluos) as one of the first capital cities of the angkor period in the 9th century. it is a great starting point for early angkorian exploration. the setting is somewhat quieter than the more popular and frequented temples within the park and is ideal for contemplative time. returning to amansara by a country road which provides the opportunity to see traditional rural life is a highlight in itself. in addition, on the road home there is one more small temple complex for the true enthusiasts, prei monti with a most unusual stone bathing pool. recent excavations suggest this may have been the site of the hariharalaya royal palace. you will arrive home at approximately 6.00pm. guests arriving into siem reap on a morning flight may wish to get started on their outings a little earlier. recommended departure for east of angkor is just after lunch with the addition of the remote temple ruin of trapeang toteung thngai. although very little of the temple remains the setting at the edge of the great lake is extremely picturesque. this hindu temple, set in a bamboo forest, was possibly founded under the reign of jayavarman III and built during the 9th century.
