_______________________________________________________________________________________ D 6785 (L) Diary of Gilbert McDougall recording his observations of the flora and fauna around Yorke Peninsula from 2 January 1886 to 16 October 1887 with an index. Transcribed by Judy Fander, Volunteer at the State Library of South Australia, 2012. Dropped out of manuscript: two watercolour drawings of two different unnamed insects on small cards. Now housed separately with the diary. Also one small drawing of a seed found between p173 and 174. On the fly leaf: J C McDougall, c/o National Bank, Adelaide Natural History Notes. 1886 Edithburgh, Y.P. Jan.2. Hunting on the rocks down at Gottschalck’s Jetty, & found several varieties of Cominella,a number of which were feeding on a dead Chiton. Several Dromiae, strange brown hairy crabs having their backs covered by a closely-fitting but unattached zoophyte ore sponge; also a couple of Chitonellus Gunni ( ), a genus of Chitonidae in which the plates are very small & narrow & imbedded at intervals along the cartilaginous back of the mollusc. Received a letter from Pulleine to whom I had sent a specimen of the black-faced Artamus which was so abundant a couple of months ago. It is the Masked Wood Swallow (Artamus personatus), a species of periodical occurrence. I have 3 good skins, & 2 eggs. The nest is si placed in similar situations to those of A. sordidus & the construction is pretty much the same, loose twigs with no lining. The male bird has a rusty red breast & is very un- Page 3. • The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh
THE LETTERS OF VINCENT VAN GOGH ‘Van Gogh’s letters… are one of the greatest joys of modern literature, not only for the inherent beauty of the prose and the sharpness of the observations but also for their portrait of the artist as a man wholly and selessly devoted to the work he had to set himself to’ - Washington Post ‘Fascinating… letter after letter sizzles with colorful, exacting descriptions … This absorbing collection elaborates yet another side of this beuiling and brilliant artist’ - The New York Times Book Review ‘Ronald de Leeuw’s magnicent achievement here is to make the letters accessible in English to general readers rather than art historians, in a new translation so excellent I found myself reading even the well-known letters as if for the rst time… It will be surprising if a more impressive volume of letters appears this year’ — Observer ‘Any selection of Van Gogh’s letters is bound to be full of marvellous things, and this is no exception’ — Sunday Telegraph ‘With this new translation of Van Gogh’s letters, his literary brilliance and his statement of what amounts to prophetic art theories will remain as a force in literary and art history’ — Philadelphia Inquirer ‘De Leeuw’s collection is likely to remain the denitive volume for many years, both for the excellent selection and for the accurate translation’ - The Times Literary Supplement ‘Vincent’s letters are a journal, a meditative autobiography… You are able to take in Vincent’s extraordinary literary qualities … Unputdownable’ - Daily Telegraph ABOUT THE AUTHOR, EDITOR AND TRANSLATOR VINCENT WILLEM VAN GOGH was born in Holland in 1853.

Van Gogh Museum Journal 1995 bron Van Gogh Museum Journal 1995. Waanders, Zwolle 1995 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_van012199501_01/colofon.php © 2012 dbnl / Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh 6 Director's Foreword The Van Gogh Museum shortly after its opening in 1973 For those of us who experienced the foundation of the Van Gogh Museum at first hand, it may come as a shock to discover that over 20 years have passed since Her Majesty Queen Juliana officially opened the Museum on 2 June 1973. For a younger generation, it is perhaps surprising to discover that the institution is in fact so young. Indeed, it is remarkable that in such a short period of time the Museum has been able to create its own specific niche in both the Dutch and international art worlds. This first issue of the Van Gogh Museum Journal marks the passage of the Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Vincent van Gogh to its new status as Stichting Van Gogh Museum (Foundation Van Gogh Museum). The publication is designed to both report on the Museum's activities and, more particularly, to be a motor and repository for the scholarship on the work of Van Gogh and aspects of the permanent collection in broader context. Besides articles on individual works or groups of objects from both the Van Gogh Museum's collection and the collection of the Museum Mesdag, the Journal will publish the acquisitions of the previous year. Scholars not only from the Museum but from all over the world are and will be invited to submit their contributions.

  • Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales︰ Re-Oriented in Maurice Sendak's
Brothers Grimm’s Fairy Tales: Re-oriented in Maurice Sendak’s Illustration Chi-Min Chang Intergrams 19.1-19.2(2019): http://benz.nchu.edu.tw/~intergrams/intergrams/191-192/191-192-chang.pdf ISSN: 1683-4186 ABSTRACT Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales have been not merely the popular read for children but a significant inspiration for writers and illustrators. The revision of the fairy tales has been constant ever since the first version in 1810 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and so have the re-illustrations. The re-illustrations enrich the meanings of the stories and enhance the intricate relations between the texts and the illustrations. Maurice Sendak, a prominent illustrator and writer for children’s stories, was noted for illustrating Grimms’ fairy tales. He ever said that his intention in illustrating Grimms’ fairy tales is to have the readers who think the stories are simple reread them again. Yet, what is significant about the re-reading? Obvious is Sendak’s intention to re- orient the story-reading and foreground the impact of the illustrations upon textual reading. Sendak’s illustration of Grimms’ tales is mainly presented in the book titled The Juniper Tree and Other Tales from Grimm, in which he has one full-page picture for each story. What is compelling in his illustration rests on the unexpected but captivating images which radically transform the reader’s idea of the stories such as “Snow White,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Rapunzel,” etc. But the questions are: How did Sendak renew the images for these stories? How do these images re-interpret these well-known stories? The exploration of Sendak’s illustration of the well-known stories in The Juniper Tree and Other Tales from Grimm focuses on how Sendak re-orients the reading of Brothers Grimm’s tales with the reconfigured text-image relation.

  • The Art of Jerry Pinkney Teacher Resource
Witness: The Art of Jerry Pinkney Teacher Resource WEB SECTION #1: Introduction to Jerry Pinkney “I’ve found it interesting to trace how the chapters of my life have knitted themselves into my art.” —Jerry Pinkney In its purest sense, the act of artistic creation is a bit like looking at oneself in the mirror and leaving one’s reflection behind. All that an artist is, all that he believes, and all the many things he has witnessed in his time, become one with his art. Across his fifty-year journey as an illustrator, Jerry Pinkney has cast a warm, curious eye on our world to create transcendent images that reflect his passion for life, his love of family and community, and his deep and abiding engagement with the rich complexities of history. Born in Philadelphia in 1939, Pinkney studied at the Philadelphia College of Art. He began his career as a graphic designer in 1960 and has been illustrating children’s books since 1964. His art has appeared in more than one hundred books, garnering Pinkney well-deserved acclaim as the recipient of a Caldecott Medal and multiple Caldecott Honor Medals and Coretta Scott King Awards. In addition to his work in children’s books, Pinkney has created illustrations for a wide variety of clients, including the U.S. Postal Service, National Park Service, and National Geographic. Whether recreating history or breathing new life into classic tales, this master watercolorist is always about much more than just the appearance of things. The exhibition explores this gifted creator’s legacy through powerful images that offer insights into where we have been, who we are, and who we might become.
