Hunting on the rocks down at Gottschalck’s Jetty, & found several varieties of Cominella,a number of which were feeding on a dead Chiton. Several Dromiae, strange brown hairy crabs having their backs covered by a closely-fitting but unattached zoophyte ore sponge; also a couple of Chitonellus Gunni ( ), a genus of Chitonidae in which the plates are very small & narrow & imbedded at intervals along the cartilaginous back of the mollusc. Received a letter from Pulleine to whom I had sent a specimen of the black-faced Artamus which was so abundant a couple of months ago. It is the Masked Wood Swallow (Artamus personatus), a species of periodical occurrence. I have 3 good skins, & 2 eggs. The nest is si placed in similar situations to those of A. sordidus & the construction is pretty much the same, loose twigs with no lining. The male bird has a rusty red breast & is very un- Page 3. Cox was awarded a PhD in History of Art from the University of Leeds in 2014, where he specialised in 19th-century Nordic art. He shares his interests between this topic and British art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to teaching at ICE, Cambridge, Jan is a regular tutor for Oxford University weekly classes, lectures at arts organisations, including Dillington House, and tutors an online course on the Impressionists. At Oxford Brookes University, Jan was awarded the Jeanne Sheehy Memorial Prize for work on Christopher Wood, an MA at Bristol followed, where his studies focused on John Minton, Keith Vaughan and British Neo-Romanticism. Fergusson – Art and Nationality Alan Riach and Alexander Moffat (Friday 18 March 2016) [Boxed off:] While Scottish poets and writers gathered in Montrose in the 1920s, then in St Andrews and Shetland in the 1930s, an artist of an older generation, born in Leith in 1874, was to travel alongside and sometimes intersect with their work. He was one of the group known familiarly as the Scottish Colourists but his vision and purpose is seen not only in his style and subjects but also, emphatically, in his book, Modern Scottish Painting. This was and remains a manifesto for the distinctiveness of Scottish art, and of Scotland, internationally and independently. He is one of the major artists of the twentieth century, fully in touch with international Modernism in Paris before the First World War, and committed to cultural and political regeneration in Scotland after the Second World War. For a younger generation, it is perhaps surprising to discover that the institution is in fact so young. Indeed, it is remarkable that in such a short period of time the Museum has been able to create its own specific niche in both the Dutch and international art worlds. This first issue of the Van Gogh Museum Journal marks the passage of the Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Vincent van Gogh to its new status as Stichting Van Gogh Museum (Foundation Van Gogh Museum). Detail of ill. 3 54 120046_p001_208.indd 54 31-05-12 13:38 Van Gogh’s Tree roots up close Bert Maes and Louis van Tilborgh Tree roots is undoubtedly the most intriguing painting from Vincent van Gogh’s Auvers period (ills. 1, 3). This close-up view of the bases of trees shows a jungle of twisted roots, trunks, branches and leaves. Enlarging and bringing forward details that had traditionally been relegated to the background had become a stock part of Van Gogh’s visual vocabulary since his discovery of the world of Japanese prints (ill. 2), but unlike a work such as Long grass with butterfl ies (ill. 4), which is also a close-up, the viewer of Tree roots ‘is hard put to identify the subject as a whole’, as Jan Hulsker wrote in 1980.1 The scene is regarded virtually without exception as ‘almost abstract’ due to ‘the extreme stylisation’.2 ‘Ambiguous, stylized, vitalistic, life-affi rming, antinaturalistic yet palpably organic: a kind of prototype for an Art Nouveau frieze’,3 was Ronald Pickvance’s reaction to it. In this he was following Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, who had asserted six years previously that ‘intima- tions of the elegant stylizations of the international Art Nouveau movement’ were ‘obviously present’ in the work.4 It displayed ‘one of the most extraordinary de- grees of a decoratively conceived quasi-abstraction which can be discovered in his total oeuvre’, and it should therefore be ‘celebrated for the prediction of twentieth- century style which it represents’. Whether we should judge art by its value for ‘the Road to Flatness’, as many regard the origins of the history of modern art,5 is very much the question, but leaving that aside, does the signifi cance of Tree roots lie solely in its formal charac- teristics, and are they really that extreme?
