University of Louisville, 1997 Committee Chair: Professor Mary Stucky Abstract This document is an examination of style for performance preparation of Thomas Pasatieri's Letter to Warsaw for voice and piano. This study provides an understanding of the life of Pola Braun, the writer of the poems set in Letter to Warsaw, and illuminates the circumstances under which she created these poems during World War II. In addition, attention to the compositional choices of Pasatieri in response to these poems is explored and discussed. The musical settings of the texts presented in Letter to Warsaw are presented and compared to those in earlier songs of Pasatieri, including Sieben Lehmannlieder, Three Poems of James Agee, Three Poems by Kirstin Van Cleave, and Ophelia's Lament. These research elements serve to equip performers with necessary information to create an accurate portrayal of these texts. A biography of Thomas Pasatieri is included in this document, as well. Pasatieri's compositional style has evolved from his earlier songs. Over time, his compositional style has become more sparse, saying with fewer notes, what he had previously said with many. Understanding the musical journey of Pasatieri will help the singer better understand the compositional style of Letter to Warsaw, and how to better communicate the words of Pola Braun. Additionally, two appendices are included, which list the operas of Pasatieri in chronological order, as well as his complete list of songs, cycles, and other vocal works. Letter to Warsaw is one of many song cycles that have been generated world wide in reaction to the atrocities of the Holocaust. In order to place Letter to Warsaw in a creative context, this document briefly describes other selected songs and cycles written in remembrance of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. ii Copyright © 2013 by Joy L.     Miranda Walston Witnessing Extermination: Using Diaries to Understand the Final Solution in Poland Honours Thesis By: Miranda Walston Supervisor: Dr. Lauren Rossi 1 Miranda Walston Introduction The Holocaust spanned multiple years and states, occurring in both German-occupied countries and those of their collaborators. But in no one state were the actions of the Holocaust felt more intensely than in Poland. It was in Poland that the Nazis constructed and ran their four death camps– Treblinka, Sobibor, Chelmno, and Belzec – and created combination camps that both concentrated people for labour, and exterminated them – Auschwitz and Majdanek.1 Chelmno was the first of the death camps, established in 1941, while Treblinka, Sobibor, and Belzec were created during Operation Reinhard in 1942.2 In Poland, the Nazis concentrated many of the Jews from countries they had conquered during the war. As the major killing centers of the “Final Solution” were located within Poland, when did people in Poland become aware of the level of death and destruction perpetrated by the Nazi regime? While scholars have attributed dates to the “Final Solution,” predominantly starting in 1942, when did the people of Poland notice the shift in the treatment of Jews from relocation towards physical elimination using gas chambers? Or did they remain unaware of such events? To answer these questions, I have researched the writings of various people who were in Poland at the time of the “Final Solution.” I am specifically addressing the information found in diaries and memoirs. Given language barriers, this thesis will focus only on diaries and memoirs that were written in English or later translated and published in English.3 This thesis addresses twenty diaries and memoirs from people who were living in Poland at the time of the “Final Solution.” Most of these diaries (fifteen of twenty) were written by members of the intelligentsia.

    Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies Session Many of us in the field of modern Jewish studies have felt the need for an active working group interested in discussing our various projects, papers, and books, particularly as we develop into more mature scholars. Even more, we want to engage other committed scholars and respond to their new projects, concerns, and methodological approaches to the study of modern Jews and Judaism, broadly construed in terms of period and place. To this end, since 2001, we have convened a “Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies” that meets yearly in connection with the Association for Jewish Studies Annual Conference on the Saturday night preceding the conference. The English diction texts by Madeleine Marshall and Kathryn LaBouff are two of the most acclaimed manuals on singing in this language. Differences in style between the two have separated proponents to be primarily devoted to one or the other. An in- depth study, comparing the precepts of both authors, and applying their principles, has resulted in an understanding of their common ground, as well as the need for the more comprehensive information, included by LaBouff, on singing in the dialect of American Standard, and changes in current Received Pronunciation, for British works, and Mid- Atlantic dialect, for English language works not specifically North American or British. Chapter 1 introduces Marshall and The Singer’s Manual of English Diction, and LaBouff and Singing and Communicating in English. An overview of selected works from Opera America’s resources exemplifies the need for three dialects in standardized English training.
