Preface The following oral history transcript is the result of a tape recorded interview with Howard Finster on June 11, 1984. The interview took place in Washington, D.C., and was conducted by Liza Kirwin for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. The sonnet reads: “I met a traveller from an antique land who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, and wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, tell that its sculptor well those passions read which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, the hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: ’My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’ Nothing beside remains. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away.”75 There are several conflicting accounts regarding Shelly’s inspiration for the sonnet, but the most widely accepted story tells that Percy Shelly was inspired by the arrival in Britain of a statute of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II. Observing the irony of a pharaoh’s statute, which was created to glorify the omnipotence of the ruler, being carried into port as a mere collectible in a museum, Shelly wrote the sonnet to summarize a particular irony that presents itself repeatedly throughout history.
