K THE ROLE OF THE CONCERT BAND IN THE TOTAL BAND PROGRAM By Gary Markham and the Music for All Educational Team | Music for All Senior Educational Consultant

The concert band is the foundation and centerpiece of the scholastic band program. The instrumental music curriculum – its scope, sequence, and standards – all emanate from this regular instruction. Marching band, jazz band, chamber ensembles, and other similar activities contribute to the enrichment of the band program and provide students with speci c valuable experiences. Each has a unique role to play within the program and provides a balance to instrumental music education. However, any one alone cannot provide the breadth and depth of the instrumental curriculum or the most e ective instructional strategies. It is within the concert band curriculum that individual and ensemble performance skills are more fully developed, and artistic decision- making is fostered enabling all of the other enrichment activities to be more successful. Ninety-two percent of those directors stated Be Part of the Band had a positive impact on their enrollment; 80% stated it had an important or signifi cant impact. Responses came from 47 states. Eight states currently sponsor discs for their teachers: Arizona, California, Indiana, Minnesota, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah. Demand a Higher Standard Introducing the NEW CSVR

The Yamaha YCL-CSVR clarinet is the result of years of development dedicated to a clearly focused concept: crafting a Custom clarinet that has a beautiful sound, consistent quality, and an affordable price. Both student and professional clarinetists require a rich sound and comfortable playability. These qualities were combined with the high level of consistency that only Yamaha can provide, allowing clarineti sts to demand a higher standard than ever before.

• Redesigned keys offer comfortable, ergonomic hand placement. In addition, the new keys have thicker silver-plating for a dark and resonant sound quality.

• Durable leather pads ensure a precise seal between pad and tone hole for ease of response throughout the entire range of the clarinet.

• A new Custom barrel design provides the CSVR with a well-balanced response and rich, warm tonal colors that will elevate the progressing clarinetist’s playing.
