Kurt Busiek : Astro City Vol. 14: Reflections before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Astro City Vol. 14: Reflections:

ScerpellaIn 1995,writer Kurt Busiek, along with artists and began "Astro City",a recurring anthology series centered around a major American city where superheroes and masked vigilantes, many of them variations on the archetypes created by the many superhero publishers like DC and Marvel, serve and protect their city. Many of these stories are about the heroes themselves, but there are a few centered around seemingly ordinary citizens, many of whom whose lives have been touched by life in Astro City. The 14th volume in the series begins with a 20th-anniversary look back at the very first Astro City story, once again visiting the nighttime dreams of alpha-level superhero Samaritan...only now they harbor a menace that threatens not only his ability to uphold justice, but his very life.We then visit an alien world, whose inhabitants see the heroic Fantastic-Four- esque First Family as a villainous threat...the story is told from the point of view of a child of this race, who soon learns that some things he was brought up to believe might not be true.Concluding the book is a new tale of reformed middle- aged supervillain Carl Donewicz, better known as the metallic-skinned Steeljack (first seen in Vol. 4,"The Tarnished Angel");having put his criminal past behind him,he uses his enhanced strength and abilities to earn his keep...until a mysterious woman out of his past reappears, pulling him into a bizarre caper involving the discarded weaponry of past supervillains, alive and dead. While knowledge of the Astro City universe may allow the reader to fully enjoy this volume,I believe there is still much here for the newcomer to appreciate, especially for anyone who craves superhero stories, but seeks a change from the usual DC/Marvel fare.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Stuff But What Was Talking About???By Clarence A. Dillard, Jr.Excerpt from .com:"Then, a spotlight on three generations of Jack-in-the-Box, as the second Jack-in-the-Box's son must decide whether to follow in the family footsteps or take another path. Also featuring the Trouble Boys, Mister Drama, the Weirdies and more."Nope- that does not happen in this book! I'm not sure which volume is detailing, but they got this wrong! What is in Volume 14 of Astro City is as follows:When a member of the First Family is kidnapped by inter-dimensional beings, the team declare all-out war! But this story isn't told from the heroes perspective but from that of the enemies. It's a very intriguing tale about propaganda and just who are the real enemies in war.In an anniversary story, the Samaritan is troubled by terrible nightmares. In order to determine the source of the problem, the hero will need to be quarantined for 24-hours. Marvel at how the entire Astro City superhero community comes together to pick up the slack for the fallen of the Honor Guard.Busiek, Anderson, and Ross revisit a classic forgotten character: Steeljack. Has the aged villain finally gone straight? Will he be able to stay righteous when he's approached by a former for help? This was a great volume. Steeljack's story, Tarnished Angel, is my favorite Astro City tale. So it was great getting to see what he was up to again. The First Family epic was very thought provoking and the Samaritan story was extremely touching. The trio of Kurt Busiek, Alex Ross, and Brent Anderson did it again with this volume! Amazing stuff!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. MasterpieceBy The Masked GamerAstro City is always a delight, and Vol. 14 is no exception. This book contains three stories, told in one, two, and three issues, focusing respectively on Samaritan, a new character called Zozaz, and in a reveal that made me squee, good ol' Steeljack. The Samaritan story is almost purely emotional, with a lot to say about the (oh yes) great responsibility faced by figures of Samaritan's deific power and the ways in which something as simple as doubt can take on nuclear-yield consequences. The Zozaz story is a meditation on truth, fascism, empathy, and perspective, and might be the most important one in the book. The Steeljack story is a Steeljack story the way I want it: hard-boiled, wry, and with a lot to say about the process of aging and the process of reformation. It was so obvious in places, and it has some holes, but it is also one of the handful of Astro City stories to make me cry at the end. Busiek and Anderson have turned in another masterpiece here, and if you aren't reading this series yet you are missing out on an absolute treasure.

Kurt Busiek's critically acclaimed series continues here in ASTRO CITY VOL. 14! In this two-part , first a look in at Steeljack--from "The Tarnished Angel," one of ASTRO CITY's most popular stories--and how he's been getting by the last few years. When he's hired by a femme fatale from his past, he'll wind up in deep trouble, with no one to turn to. Then, a spotlight on three generations of Jack-in-the-Box, as the second Jack-in-the-Box's son must decide whether to follow in the family footsteps or take another path. Also featuring the Trouble Boys, Mister Drama, the Weirdies and more. Collects ASTRO CITY #26, #29-30 and #32-34.
